the scorpion and the frog
Unable to cross the river, the scorpion says to the frog, “Can you carry me across? I need to get to the other side, but I’m afraid that I can’t swim like you can.”
“Well,” says the frog, “I may, but I know the venom that you carry.”
“I promise not to sting you. That would drown us both.”
The frog, considering that argument to be sensible, allows the scorpion to climb upon its back to cross the river. Midway through their journey, the frog feels the scorpion’s stinger pierce its skin. They both begin to sink under the water.
Before submerging, the frog uses its final breath to cry, “Why? How could you sting me despite knowing the consequences?”
“I’m sorry. I couldn’t resist the urge,” the scorpion says, “It’s in my nature.”
They drown unceremoniously.
...
In the end... we were both scorpions after all. Isn't that right?
