Design Notes;

  • Dae is 7'5.
  • He has two dark red horns on the right side of his head--post-corruption, that is. The general marker for what stage of daes story dae's at in any given image is the presence of those horns. Half of daes left eye appears blue post-corruption as well. This is actually two irises fused together but unless you're up reaaaal close you cant really tell there's a separation.
  • Though the horns and second iris made their debut after his monstruous transformation, they became more and more apparent as he started experimenting with human souls.
  • His hair has a natural gradient. He usually wears it in two braids over his shoulders, but also has it down frequently.
Trivia;

  • He grew up in a farming village, and is very used to dealing with crops and cattle.
  • He mostly targets the mid to upper-class with his soul-stealing business unless he’s desperate. He likes to pretend it’s because the souls of the lower class "aren’t worth it” rather than him sympathizing with their life situation due to his own humble upbringing.
  • In daes world, necromancy is a magical affiliation one is born with. It's pretty rare, and also pretty taboo in most circles. The town Jasric grew up in was no exception.
CAREER;

  • Jasric runs a business in which he temporarily revives the dead upon the request of his clients, allowing them to meet for a short period of time. Dae offers this service to everyone from grieving family members who never had the chance to say goodbye to government officials seeking information from a deceased source.
  • The price for daes services is higher than dae'd have you believe; dae asks for two things--a precious object belonging to the person being revived, and a most prized non-living possession from the client themselves. The former helps him to tether the spirit of the deceased to the mortal realm, and the latter has important magical properties necessary for his craft, he claims. While this may be true, ultimately, dae has ulterior motives for the price dae asks for. These possessions hold a direct connection to the souls of whoever cherished them, and Jasric can use this connection to consume the souls of the deceased. After a client meets with a spirit he brought back, he kills the spirit again himself, now with direct access to their soul. And when the client themself inevitably passes away... Well, dae'll have a preexisting connection to make it just that much easier for another soul to be collected.
  • Note: The people Jasric "brings back" aren't entirely...whole. They're essentially glorified zombies, and while they still retain the appearance and memories of their former selves, they cannot feel any real emotion or connection to the world. With Jasric's magic, they could go on living for many, many years, but dae has no interest in letting them toddle around for that long.
PERSONAL LIFE;

  • Jasric was born to two deadbeat parents, left to be raised by his maternal grandparents on their farm. The village dae grew up in was relatively traditional, and necromancy is looked down upon as much--if not more--than anywhere else in the world. Jasric obviously didn't love being shunned by the people he grew up around, so he tried resuscitating dead crops and the like to earn their favor, ensuring a bountiful harvest each year. Unfortunately for daem, the villagers took it as a blessing from the gods, writing off Jasric's claims as the pretense of a silly, self-important child.
  • Eventually, Jasric left his home and came to possess an apprenticeship under the official archmage of the nation's royal court. He came to know and bond with the apprentice of the top physician, Alysandre, the two of them growing to be close friends as they learned everything there was to learn about their respective crafts.
  • ...At some point, that friendship became something more. Well, at least for Jasric, it did. Daes feeling would never be reciprocated, though, right? Ale's only committment was to his research, and he'd never shown any interest in something like love.
    Those feelings only got stronger, though.
    Unbearably so.
    It wasn't like Jasric was subtle about it--Ale was just that dense.
    Jasric would do anything for him.
  • Eventually, the two of them graduated on to take their instructors’  positions, their closeness leading them to even higher heights of  research. Specifically, the two together were interested in humanely and wholly bringing back human life, a feat never once successfully accomplished. Though, Jasric's feelings for Ale were really what carried his motivation to help them pursue their goal; Jasric never really cared all that much about the potential his magical talents had.
    Well, at least he didn't.
  • Tension and conflict between the nation and a neighboring one boiled over into outright war at the height of their research, forcing the two of them to pivot to helping the military forces under command of the monarch. Jasric was uninterested in the conflict, reluctant to help the military win anything when he and Ale were still wrapped up in their research. As for Ale, however--well, the selfless bastard was never going to do anything but try to assist on the front lines.
  • Long story short, he was stabbed through the heart by a knight of the opposing nation at the climax of the conflict. Jasric went fucking insane, essentially slaughtering hundreds upon hundreds of soldiers by himself and nearly singlehandedly ending the war. Specifically, Jasric’s anger mutated him into a horrible monster, tearing apart the battlefield with long claws and sharp teeth along with powerful bursts of soul-damning magic. At the peak of the violence, he gained an uncharacteristic thirst for blood that sent him into a monstrous frenzy, twisting his form into something demonic and inhuman, a direct response to the powerful dark magic flowing through his body and soul.
  • ...Of course, carnage like that couldn't just go unpunished. Jasric was left alive, but banished from the royal court, losing his position as archmage and access to his and Ale's life's work. Dae fell into a depression, consumed by grief and hopelessness.
  • And then he remembered he was a necromancer. He remembered what that life's work was about. Dae could--dae would bring Alysandre back, wholly and completely, not as a shell of his former self but as the brilliant, lively person he had been before. Dae snuck back into the court briefly to retrieve their work, taking it back with daem and resuming the research the war had forced daem to pause.
  • Daes research procured many different results; not only did dae learn how to better manipulate the threads of life and death, but dae also discovered the secret to immortality as well. He was given infinite time to bring Ale back, and although he'd have to harvest the souls of other people to extend his lifespan, he never much cared for other people.
  • Dae soon realized that without Ale, dae was no longer bound by morality, either. He didn't have to worry about finding a "solution" to death that didn't require sacrifice. Conveniently, the method dae uncovered also required souls--though specifically the souls of the pure of heart, whatever that meant. That's super subjective, though, isn't it? Jasric figured that he'd just collect as many souls as he could and make that judgement afterwards, later conducting experiments on these souls to try and determine their worth. Any souls that weren't pure enough would end up extending daes lifespan, anyway--it's a win-win. And thus his handy necromantic soul-collecting dead loved one meet-and-greet business was born!
