Atsui's mother, like many traditional Shrine Maidens studied from a young age through family members. Sadly she was tricked after being assigned to her shrine by one of the Kannushi there, who still believed in the old practices to allow himself to have sex with the young maidens at his shrine while posing as a Kami.

Becoming pregnant, she was over joyed to be birthing a mikogami in honor of her chosen Kami. However she learned the truth of being tricked later on. Praying to the Kami, she felt trapped and defiled.

Unknown to her, she had been visited by the Kami, Sukunabikona, who tried his best to heal her and replaced the Kannushi's seed with his own. However she was overcome by darkness and in the end tried to take her own life, and in turn Atsui's.

Thankfully someone happened to be nearby and managed to save Atsui, who was later returned to her mother's family and brought up to be Priestess as well.

Today

Like her Kami father, Atsui has the power to heal, through herbs and medicines.

Though in reality the heal herbal smoke is produced by her own body, so she must hide it from letting normal humans see. Therefore she almost always has her Censer, or pocket versions on her at all times. This later developed into a smoking habit, as it was the easiest way to cover in her youth. Often getting her in trouble or sent home from school.

Thankfully these things never caused a negative impact on her life and she was able to become an official Shaman for the royal families- hence her dark purple robes vs. the traditional red.
