// Description.

// Habitat.

Maskrels are human-made creatures, and therefore are most often found in or near human settlements. Most maskrels live with their creators/masters in their homes. On rare occasions, "wild"/rogue maskrels who do not serve a mage will become nomads, travelling across the realm but never stopping in one place for too long.

// Group Organization.

A group of maskrels (3 or more) is called a “gallery”; however, it’s very rare to see even two in the same space. Solitary and often territorial, maskrels tend to live by themselves, only agreeing to coexist with humans, typically the ones who created them.

// Hunting & Diet.

Maskrels are carnivorous, and prefer eating already dead/cooked meat rather than hunting. They don’t need to eat to survive, but mainly do so for their own enjoyment. Some may even kill for sport if vicious enough.

// Communication.

Maskrels can speak and write in human language, but do not have a language of their own. Their voices are more of a hiss than anything, but can communicate easily with both humans and each other. Alongside speaking words, they can produce inhuman howls and screeches as well; these have no defined meaning and are mainly just for intimidation. Maskrels mainly communicate with body language, as they have no facial features that can emote in the traditional sense. Some common gestures include:

  • “Smiling”/baring teeth - rather than a friendly gesture, a toothy grin from a maskrel is regarded as a threat by others, and is a likely sign of an imminent attack.
  • Open mouth - a wide open mouth is the single warning a maskrel gives before striking their victim; if a maskrel opens its mouth wide while interacting it is best advised to get away from it as soon as possible.
  • Dilating/contracting pupils - a maskrel changing the size of their pupils is equivalent to a human widening or narrowing their eyes.
