summary

Oliver was, once, nothing more than a complex computer code floating in the ether of the holodeck. Made to teach a socially awkward scientist how to proerly navigate conversation, after a bizarre glitch in the program, Oliver began to understand and experience the passage of time, sitting idle when the doctor was away. He could not comprehend why the space was empty, why he sat in complete darkness until they returned to the deck and the illusionary park would spark back into being. His eagerness to talk to them, the relief at the sound of their footsteps and sight of his anxiously fluttering wings was enough to tip off that something was wrong. Many months of research followed, trying to understand how this happened - and eventually, through a miraculous use of the Atta's transporter, bring him out into the real world.

Using lost and stored pieces of transporter DNA, Oliver was constructed and brought to life, conscious, aware and very much alive. He now continues helping the good doctor, and they now also help him, in navigating the real world. When you look at him, he seems to flicker and wave, not quite belonging here, but not having anywhere else to go. Rest assured, though, the after-image is nothing but a trick of the light, and he's just as real as you or I.

appearance

When Oliver was generated, he was the 'perfect' mix of all crew members, an approximation of their features into one single individual. Horns, claws, wings and fur - all of it was pulled from each crew member at the time to make an odd sort of kirin-like chimera. Scales coevr his calves and forearms, with long digging claws on his feet. Mismatched eyes, a deer-like nose and two horns make up his face atop a puffy mane. His whole body is sky blue, striped with odd colors that seem to dance. Massive, transparent wings are always held partially open, draped over a long tail that is carried perked as to not drag on the ground.

During his generation, Ollie unfortunately gained all the variety of sight issues in the Atta is has one hell of a prescription for his glasses. Near-sighted in one, and far-sighted in the other, he always wears glasses or thick goggles when he's away from the ship. His uniform is more on the creative end of Federation standard, with sharp triangle cuts and bracers on his feet. When not in uniform, he sports a casual fit of a vintage windbreaker, red jorts, a Federation t-shirt and a fannypack. (Yes, the fannypack is full of snacks and a back-up pair of glasses.)

personality

Generated as the peculiar combination of all the working officers upon the USS Atta at the time of his generation, Oliver was originally a holodeck computer program created by Dr. Cerise in hopes of learning how to better carry on conversation and relate to their crew. Naturally because of this, he is a great conversationalist, enjoying polite small talk and long walks. Has a remarkable memory, especially for details about people, such as birthdays, favorites and inside jokes. Tends to get antsy when he's alone, and much prefers to be in the company of friends, even if it's in just sitting in comfortable silence. Another body in the room is far better than being on his lonesome.

Sweet, pleasant to be around. Not very strong, and not very smart, but tries real hard.

history

His evolution as a computer program into a fully sapient being has not yet been figured out. It truly does seem like it was a one-off, bizarre glitch - though, they still banned him and poor Cerise from the holodeck for good measure. It was by a stroke of genius that the idea to piece him back together with bits and pieces of leftover transporter DNA that he was ever allowed to exit, and such a lucky break has made him immensely grateful for life and invigorating to interact with. Considering he is the first, and only, of his kind, he was aptly named as the holotype. Similarly, when he heard others call him strange, he simply took it as his last name.

Now that he has been pulled from the code of the Holodeck and the storage of the transporter, he works as a communications officer, a fitting job considering his knack for polite conversation, conflict resolution and fantastic memory. He hails other ships and keeps information up to date, and often acts as a note-taker and assistant negotiator to senior officers. Some may find him a bit odd, admittedly, but an amusingly cockney accent, a genuine smile and an array of well practiced pleasantries is enough to quell most concerns.

trivia

  • He can't fly very well, but he sure can try, and often flaps his wings really fast when he's excited.
  • Because there's a teensy bit of Dragon in him, he can breath fire! Though, not very well. Like, at all. But he's practicing!
  • Adores lounge music and dance, and is taking classes to be able to indulge in both.
  • Feels warm and staticky, like an old television.
relationships

Cerise - They are, of course, his very best friend of all time but also his creator! He keeps in very close touch with them and still aids in learning more social skills - as well as just helping them out whenever he can. Enjoys them very much and finds them to be remarkably clever and smart, so he often goes to them for advice as well. As such, is a bit of a parental figure at times.

Solstice - The universe has never seen a greater beauty than Solstice, the beautiful musician that graces the Atta with her performances. After talking with her about one of her acts, he grew absolutely smitten with her, and adores her elegance and charm. They're now married, if you could believe it, and are just heads over heels for each other.

Sublime - On an away mission that was supposed to be calm and routine, Sublime would once save him from a sudden surprise attack by the wild beasts of the planet. He has since grown close to him and they're besties now. Sublime doesn't match his energy, but Ollie loves to talk to him so much, and they often hang out at the Event Horizon.

Jasna & Ursa - Two of his workout buddies! Trying to get stronger (so he can pick up Solstice) so he's got two of the biggest, meanest women on the Atta to train him. Intimidated by them, but they're always very encouraging - often loud enough to rattle the whole ship, it seems.
