Raine is a creature akin to a vampire that is incredibly skilled in playing instruments and all things music. He is quite tall, standing at 5'11. He is on the skinnier side, but has a small build of muscle and is very active. Raine has long, naturally blue hair that is styled into a mullet which the tips end at his lower collar bone area. He has vibrant, blue eyes that fade into a jaded sky blue once exposed to the sun - they regain their luminosity at night. His voice is soft and high for a man, but low enough to express that he is an adult male. He has a thick Estonian accent to his voice with very light hints of an Essex accent as well. He is usually seen in dark clothes or winter coats and with his perscription sunglasses. When his sunglasses are off - either when he is in a dark room or it is night time - his full face is revealed, showing that behind his outward pretty boy appearance, he has a faded scar on the bridge of his nose along with incredibly obvious wrinkles, bags, and dark circles under his eyes. This is not from a lack of sleep (he doesn't need to sleep), rather this is from the consequences of hardly wearing any optical protection as a child. He has extreme photophobia, but always tries to manage through that when conducting in any interviews or tours. His skin also bruises quite easily, he can be seen in bandages or band-aids frequently, but do not be alarmed - this is not from any form of self infliction or malicious intent from another, he is just clumsy and very susceptible to abrasions of any kind. He has golden starter piercigs that he refuses to switch out, and he used to have a steel lip piercing that was since removed by his father due to him getting it without any form of parental permission.
Raine is a non-human entity, being a special breed of vampire known as a vex, but he was not always a vampire. He was raised as a vex and has been recorded of being one since minutes after he was born, yet he was actually originally born human. His father and mother were vampires, his father being a pure bred vex and his mother being a human-turned-vex. He was born as a human due to his mother being not yet turned into a vampire until after Raine's conception, but was bitten by his father as soon as he left the womb, to ensure their vexian bloodline would go on, seeing that vexes were a more uncommon morph of blood-sucking beings. His mother was always strict on him as he grew up and his father was always a quiet and distant man. While being born in the mid 90s, he was raised as if he was a child in the 40s. There were no toys, no playing outside, no desserts, no leaving the house unless it was to deliver the paper to neighbors, no crying, no hugs, no comforting - absolutely nothing a young child needs to grow up aside from the essentials (blood, meat, shelter, etc). At age eight, his mother allowed him to get piano lessons as a hobby, although Raine did not pick nor want this to be his hobby, and found these lessons to be such a waste of time. He would get smacked with a ruler if he were to mess up any notes, and by age ten, he grew phenominal at playing those tender 88 keys. Ever since he was little, was was very sensitive to light - as most vampires are - and he was given his first pair of perscription sunglasses to protect his sensitive eyes from the violent rays the sun radiated. Raine found these glasses a pain in the neck to constantly wear during daylight hours, and often neglected wearing these. He learned the hard way that not obeying lead to consequences. His eyes grew weaker, dark circles, layers and layers of wrinkles formed on his face. Raine thought ever since he saw himself that he was ugly and never wanted to be seen without a pair of sunglasses again, totally scarred by the aftermath of what that blasted sun had done to his face. After Raine's mother grew bored of hearing only the piano being played, she forced Raine to learn how to play the clarinet and bassoon. Raine ended up genuinely liking the clarinet, and to this day is his preferred instrument of choice. Whenever he was upset as a child, instead of crying, he would sing to himself as a way to cope, unable to hear how talented his voice was, and how spectacular it was going to be.
Vexian Hightail
From age 8 to 14, his mother got stricter by the day, and would demand that his father would punish him, often with beating him to a pulp or locking him in his room. One time when Raine finally found himself in the music he would play an announced that he wanted to become a full-time muscician, his parents had his newfound dream set ablaze, never to be discussed again. This caused the first sign of bitterness for his guardians to boil up in his sweet, caring heart. The strictness of his mother and the neglective and enabler of a father he had was eating up at him by the time he turned 14, and soon realized if he were to stay any longer, he would surely go mad. That's when he hatched the perfect plan to run away on the next Halloween - that way he would be able to blend in with the many costumed trick-or-treaters until he could hide further into the nearest city a few miles away. He was able to escape at age 15, and soon moved from Estonia to England a few months later after smuggling himself onto a ship, headed for the United Kingdom.
Raine was able to live undetected in Essex, England, where no one seemed to question his monotone, Estonian accent or unusual appearance. With only his clarinet, some euro he had converted into quid, and his sunglasses, he decided to play music on the sidewalks, hoping people would slip some money into his little bucket he obtained. His skills brought attention to many citizens, and eventually, his music caught the attention of a man who owned a bar that was looking for people to perform live for cash. Raine took this opportunity at once and was a hit, combining his musical talents together to be a jack of all trades. Customers were delighted by his performances and always referred to him as Wonderboy. One night, in the early AM, a fight was taking place in one of the bar's alleyways, to which Raine decided to investigate. When Raine took a look on what kind of fight was taking place, one of the men fighting recognized him as Wonderboy and coaxed him into playing for them all. Raine, already habing his clarinet in hand, agreed with some hesitation. As he began to play, a green skinned man emerged out of the shadows, appearing completely gobsmacked. The green skinned man pulled Raine aside and praised him for his playing, and introduced himself as Louis Niccals. Louis offered him a spot to play in his band that he was starting, and practically begged for Raine to say yes after he showed Louis that he was gifted with a singing voice as well as skilled with the clarinet.
Current
Louis and Raine have since started up their band, Oil Slick, as of 2019, along with a girl named Summit and another girl, Tabby - who is currently dating Louis. They have so far been qite a success as a minor band, still gradually climbing their way across ranking polls. Raine knows that Tabby has a dark side to her - he can see that through the proof of Louis (ex. insults, threats, bruises, tears, bloody noses, etc) - and he wants to put an end to having her negativity overtake their band. Tabby also slacks in her role as the band's guitarist, so Raine took it upon himself to learn guitar just in case she were to ever be unable to play due to her extreme laziness. Until then, all he really can do is work on keeping his bandmates safe and keeping his musical talents flowing through every note, every key, and every strum he emits.
- Raine's name was inspired by Rainie Pritchard from Where the Red Fern Grows
- Raine was originally going to be a cold, mysterious guitar player from South Asia, but I thought making him a cautious and thoughtful vampire morph would be a lot more interesting. Seeing that almost all vampires are from Romania, I thought having an Estonian vampire would make a bit more sense.
- His eyesight condition is called Vaevaamia Päikese Lühinägelikkus (VPL or Vexian Solar Myopia), which can only affect vexes that have been exposed to an obscene amount of sunlight
- Raine was created some time between July 9th and July 15th in 2021 based on this concept doodle testing out what I wanted his hair and face to look like
Louis •
close friends, bandmates
Raine and Louis met in an alley during a fight in the early hours of the morning and instantly sparked with one another. The two get along very well despite being polar opposites of each other. Raine often comforts Louis whenever he has any sort of sensory overloads or has had too much abuse thrown towrads him by his partner. Louis sometimes likes to joke that Raine is the mother that he never had, even thugh Raine is younger than him. Raine feels a special connection between them both that gives him jittery feelings, but he knows these feelings are one-sided and keeps them to himself.
Tabby •
bandmates
These two are very cross with one another. Tabby is angry with Raine's talent and looks while Raine abhors Tabby's bad attitude and laziness. He always has to do her job for her while she takes all the credit for his hard work. Not only is she a total brat with no respect for instruments, but she is extremely toxic towards her partner which only increases his internal rage for her. When these two are alone in a room, there is always shouting and at least one punch thrown.
Summit •
good friends, bandmates
Raine and Summit are on great terms with each other, they are good friends and extremely close accquatences. They enjoy talking with each other about anything and love collaborating on praising their favorite music, films, books, and people. They are the reason their band's music has its essence of love, friendship, and happiness hinted within each note and strum of each song.
