Bio

Taiga is a melanistic Icewing, not a hybrid as many believe. Like all icewings, she has the ability of frost breath and can withstand extremely cold temperatures. She grew up in the Ice kingdom with an older brother and 2 brothers from the same clutch of eggs.

Taiga upon first impression is cold and mean. She goes out of her way to avoid strangers unless necessary and it takes a very long time for her to trust anyone and open up. Before she met Gobi she was known to be a strange recluse and the local dragons learned not to try to engage her in small talk. She is quick to anger and snappy, not afraid to use threats. Under the cold exterior Taiga is awkward, not really knowing how to hold conversations without giving short blunt answers. She is awful when it comes to words and instead shows things through actions. She isn't very openly affectionate and still gets flustered sometimes when Gobi is overly tactile, though she is more or less desensitized when the dragonets do it.

Backstory

So, what's their past like? 

Taiga has had the weight of her parents disappointment crushing her from the moment she hatched out of the egg with the wrong colors on her scales. She was blamed for all the scrutiny and hybrid allegations her parents faced. She worked twice as hard as her brothers and though excelled far above them, her parents never acknowledged her. She was frequently ridiculed by her North and Polar, her brother from her clutch, while mostly ignored by her older brother Ridge. News spread one day that an icewing took a seawing animus as a mate and they had an egg together. The icewing was killed and her egg was taken from her possession to be raised as a part of the ice kingdom. Knowing how she herself was treated just for looking like a hybrid, she decided that she needed to take the egg and flee. She managed to sneak into the palace no problem and apprehend the egg, but was discovered by her brothers as she was leaving. North sounded the alarm while both he and Ridge pursued her. North managed to catch her first and gave her a few wounds before Ridge stepped in and fought North off. The two fled and didn’t make it very far before the reinforcements were tailing them. Ridge shoved Taiga into a cave and knocked the rocks over top to block the entrance and hide her with the egg. The guards arrived with North and he told them what happened with Ridge and Taiga. When questioned where Taiga was, Ridge lied that she was already long gone. Much to North’s surprise and dismay, the punishment for this crime was death, as stated by the queen herself. In his last moments he admitted that he regretted looking the other way when Taiga was mistreated and just wished he had done something sooner. Taiga had no choice but to flee through the tunnels with the opportunity Ridge gave her. She made it all the way to the sand kingdom border when North caught up and attacked her. He accused her of being the reason Ridge was dead, to which she replied it was his fault for ratting him out. He recoiled and Taiga made her escape. She eventually collapsed in the desert where she was found by a sandwing named Gobi. Taiga was significantly injured but still had the determination to protect the egg like a cornered animal. Gobi managed to talk her down and convinced Taiga that she just wanted to help and led the icewing to a seaside cave where she could rest and heal. Gobi, much to Taiga’s annoyance, would fly there every morning with medicine and food for Taiga and persisted despite the icewing’s icy personality. More and more often Gobi would stay overnight which eventually progressed to her staying multiple days on end. Taiga didn’t want to admit it, but she secretly enjoyed Gobi’s presence. Gobi was around so often she even got to witness the moment Ridley hatched after a whole year of visits. When Ridley was a little under a year old Gobi and Taiga brought him out to play as usual and were attacked by two icewings, North and Polar. Gobi burned holes in one of North’s wings and right as Polar pinned Taiga down, Gobi struck him in the throat with her tail barb, killing him quickly. Taiga crippled North’s leg and chased him off. Afterward, Gobi and Taiga fled to find a safer home. Time passed peacefully for them until Ridley is 1.5 years old and North showed up once more, but this time he is limping heavily on the leg Taiga crippled and begging for forgiveness. He explained to her that he was banished and scorned by their parents and had nowhere else to go. Taiga initially refuses to help him but Gobi, still feeling guilty for killing Polar, agrees to let him stay with them. After a couple of weeks of staying with them and slowly starting to gain their trust, North stole Ridley during the night and flew away. When Gobi and Taiga woke, they tirelessly searched for them for the two. It wasn’t hard to come to the conclusion that North betrayed them. Taiga, blinded by anger, tried to take off to the kingdom of ice in order to get Ridley back and was only held back when Taiga reminded her that she would be killed for setting foot over the border. The two began searching for an alternate solution, to find someone who could enter the kingdom without question and would help them get their dragonet back. It proved to be very difficult, since the only icewings outside the kingdom either had no plans of going back or were loyal to the queen. Throughout their searches they encountered a few strange outcasted dragonets that they took in- Akebi, a rainwing who couldn’t change his scales, Oleander, a Hivewing with only one set of wings, Dreamwatcher, a nightwing with no fire, icewing heritage, and a weak ability to sense emotions, and Canyon, a piebald skywing with deformed hind legs.

While on a supply run in the southern regions of the sky kingdom, Gobi and Taiga were attacked by a skywing animus. Taiga was surprised and suspicious when Rime of all dragons saved Gobi, as she recognized her from her time in the icewing kingdom- not only that, but a dragon in the first circle. Ridley appeared shortly afterward and managed to deescalate the situation, though there was no time for a reunion as he explained how one of their companions was poisoned and needed help. Taiga was overwhelmed by emotions upon seeing her lost son but was forced to shove them down in the face of the dire situation. She helped to bring Fig to a doctor and only that night, after Ridley returned to their camp from sitting with Fig, did everything finally slam into her again. Both her and Gobi finally got their long awaited reunion, filled with many tears and emotions. Once Fig was well enough, Taiga and Gobi took Ridley and his group back to their home and introduced them to their other dragonets.
