- Kanzan resides at the Free Company house, where he takes care of cooking and cleaning for a wage. He's found a family in the other members of the FC, and has taken to many of them.
- He often travels to wherever the FC members end up going, and enjoys perusing the local markets for new and exciting ingredients.
- When he was born, the peony tree that hung over the front door of his family's home had just begun to bloom, and the flower became one of his favorites.
Kanzan is a gentle giant. He's always been kindhearted and thoughtful, and is always there to check up on those that he cares about. He suffers from a lot of anxiety and depression from his past, but tries not to let it show.
Kanzan was born in a small village near the foot of a mountain just outside of Kugane, where he remained through his entire childhood. His parents were both adept swordsmen, and as soon as he could hold a wooden sword, his training began. Kanzan didn't mind the sword training, but he much preferred spending time with his grandmother, who taught him from a young age everything she knew about baking and cooking.
When he was a teenager, his parents, who both worked for the local adventurer's guild, were killed while out on a job. Kanzan was destroyed by this news, and he put down his sword and refused to pick it back up unless absolutely necessary. He took a lot of comfort in his grandmother in this time, and stayed with her until her passing soon after when he was 19.
Kanzan decided he could no longer stay in his lonely family home any longer, and moved to Kugane to open his own bakery. He purchased a small bakery with an apartment on the second floor, and worked hard to create a successful business. He was making enough money that he didn't have to worry, and he was happy and fulfilled in his job choice.
After a couple years of owning his bakery, Kanzan made a fatal error. He took in a young man who was injured, fleeing from the Garlean troops stationed in Kugane. Kanzan bandaged his wounds to the best of his ability and fed him, allowing him to shelter in his home overnight. In the morning, he saw his guest off and went to the market for ingredients, but when he returned, his bakery, his pride and joy, was nothing but smoldering ashes. Several Garlean troops approached him, asking if he was the owner of the bakery, and Kanzan knew what was happening. He dropped his groceries and took off running, eventually evading his pursuers before they could capture him. With what money he had on his person, he boarded the first ship going somewhere he thought would be safe-- Eorzea, Gridania specifically. This is where he met Rigel Eurona, a member of the Free Company he would eventually come to know as family, and he was hired into the FC to take care of the cooking and cleaning.
The two met one another during the events of Stormblood, when the Scions traveled to Kugane. Kanzan tagged along with the rest of the Free Company, desperately missing his home. He met Yuka after realizing the other was also hiding from the Garleans stationed there, and he brought Yuka back to the inn rooms that their company had rented out for somewhere safe to stay.
When Rheli'a was first introduced to the company, Kanzan took on something of a teacher role for him. After his initial meeting with Rheli'a, where he was bitten while trying to help get him bathed, he was a bit scared of the miqo'te, but powered through regardless. The two became quite close friends, with Kanzan helping teach Rheli'a Eorzean sign language and how to read.
Kotoha and Kanzan became fast friends after getting to know one another, both being Raen. He's quite fond of Kotoha, despite her teasing attitude toward him, and considers her to be something like an older sister.
