Desi was meant to be the leader. She had already undergone the coming of age ceremony, the contents of her legs telling it all. She was training for years underneath the current chief on how to lead the village when her time came.

Then the chief had a child, and soon another. All his free time went to raising his new family, and Desi was left to learn the ropes on her own. This is fine, she thought, now she could learn from experience and see how things worked in real life. Soon months turned into years, and the chief was coming on in age. Soon her time would come.

Before they knew it, it was time for the chief's eldest to come of age. And before everyone's eyes her role was chosen, as a set of shiny new timepieces appeared within her cage. This couldn't be, a village can't have two chiefs. So they didn't, and Desi was tossed out of the village, and things went on as if she never existed.

Anger burns in her chest, a leader with no tribe was no leader at all. And for months she wept in the woods, wandering aimlessly between breakdowns and meltdowns. But now? She yearns for a tribe, a makeshift family to call her own.
