Profile

“I just hope we all remember who’s in charge around here!”

The Sun just has to be the center of attention. Even though by the standards of the Milky Way he’s just a typical yellow dwarf, to the Solar System Squad he’s everything. And he’ll make sure his planets are well aware that he’s in charge. He’s a loving father to his planets, providing them with physical and emotional warmth, yet he can also be harsh, scolding his children with a solar-wind slap on the wrist. He’s prone to large outbursts, and during such outbursts he will uncontrollably shoot bursts of plasma from his hands, which can damage the electronics of Solar System Squad HQ, not to mention he’s known to punch the equipment himself during especially bad fits of rage. These outbursts get much worse every eleven years, corresponding with the Sun’s hair getting messier and his face getting covered with spots. (If you ever see the Sun like this, watch out!) At other times during this cycle, the Sun will withdraw and become cold and distant; one time he withdrew like this for several decades, much to Earth’s dismay. Earth blames the Sun’s behavior for a period of cold they experienced around that time, but the Sun denies this, putting the blame on Earth themself. In his youth the Sun was much more cold and distant, preferring to spend time with his siblings than his planets, for he blamed his children for the death of his beloved Nebulosa. Eventually the Sun moved away from his birth stellar nursery and his siblings, and learned to give love to the family he created. Today he leads the Solar System Squad, a team of vigilantes tasked (by themselves) with protecting the Solar System. When he’s not fighting interplanetary threats, he frequents the Milky Way Stellar Club, where he constantly boasts about his planets to the other stars. Among the planets he’s physically closest to Mercury, but emotionally he has a soft spot for Venus, who absorbs the most of his “warmth”, and Earth, who greatly admires him for sustaining their life. All the planets’ emotions seem to be in tune with the Sun’s, but as Earth is the most empathetic and emotional, his influence is the clearest in them. He does not appreciate Jupiter’s insistence that he is “almost a star” and thus should be second-in-command, or Venus trying to do his job for him. He keeps in touch with his stellar siblings, but often forgets to call.

The Sun is right-handed like most of his planets. His main power is creating bursts of plasma, and he can create bright flashes of light with or without these plasma bursts. These plasma bursts can disrupt electronics and give people radiation poisoning. Like all stars, he glows in the dark. He has extremely strong gravity and can pull objects toward him, and he can create a very strong magnetic shield. He can create miniature nuclear fusion reactions, though this power can be very destructive so he rarely uses it. These are standard star abilities.

Physical Appearance

305 cm (10’0") tall. Mesomorphic, with moderate build. Nearly perfectly round face. Light brown skin tone with pale yellow undertones, yellowish “veins” visible throughout face and body. Round pale yellow eyes. Medium-width nose. His face is often covered in small black dots that first appear around his nose. Shoulder-length loose curly pale yellow/cream hair with bangs. Usually wears a necklace with a dot inside a circle on it, a cream-colored short-sleeve shirt with a yellow starburst shape centered around the neckline, a white jacket with black buttons and orange flame shapes on the sleeves, white pants with yellow vertical lines and four circles on each leg below the knees, and orange shoes. The edges of his body and clothes appear darker than his center, as if they are in shadow.

Design Notes

The Sun, at ten feet, is very tall by human standards, but as stars range from about eight feet tall to over thirty feet, he’s not abnormal by stellar Celestial standards. The Sun is one of the roundest celestial objects known, so the character of the Sun has a nearly perfectly round face and round eyes. His body is made more of rectangular shapes to represent his constant support for the Solar System Squad as their leader. His pale yellow/cream eyes, hair, and shirt are a combination of the common perception of the Sun’s color as yellow, even though it is actually white. All stellar Celestials have “veins” running throughout the surface of their skin, in a color that reflects their spectral class. G-type stars like the Sun have yellow undertones and yellow veins, as G-type main sequence stars (like the Sun) are often called “yellow dwarfs,” even if their true color is closer to white. He often has black dots on his face that resemble acne; those represent sunspots. The white color of his jacket and pants is the true color of the Sun, while the yellow starburst on his shirt and yellow lines on his pants reflect the perception of the Sun as being yellow. His orange shoes are the color of many false-color ultraviolet images of the Sun. The starburst shape on his shirt represents the Sun’s core, where hydrogen fusion happens. The lines on his pants represent the Sun’s radiative zone adjacent to the core, while the circles represent the convective zone further out. There are eight circles, four on each leg, to represent the eight planets, four inner and four outer. His jacket represents the Sun’s photosphere. The black buttons are sunspots, while the flame shapes represent prominences. His necklace has the astronomical and astrological symbol for the Sun on it.

-Don't forget the yellow "veins" on his face. They are not optional. Sunspots (dark spots) on his face are optional, however.

-His eyes are pale yellow.

-Don't forget his necklace, the orange flame shapes on his sleeves, or his jacket's buttons. His necklace is made of gold. His jacket has exactly eleven buttons on each side. He wears nail polish.

-The limb darkening is optional since I forget it 99% percent of the time I draw stars.
