Julien was a botanical scholar in a respected university whose friends stumbled upon a trove of eldritch literature that drove them to madness. While they were able to rope him in for a time, he pried himself from the frenzy that was their newly formed cult and fled--but only after being subjected to their rituals. He spent about half a year in small towns to keep a low profile, and came to the hamlet after hearing the heir was in desperate need of doctors. He was more tempted by the hamlet’s dark rumors than scared of them, and decided he would put his education to use out there instead of hiding for the foreseeable future.
