Pepper and Cinnamon were born into a life full of music due to their musically inclined and talented parents. While Cinnamon showed signs of advanced growth as a filly, Pepper lagged behind. When Cinnamon was walking and talking and learning how to control her magic, Pepper was stumbling, voiceless, and uninterested in using the magic she was born with. It was discovered early on that her physical, emotional, and magical growths were stunted; due to her weak constitution, she fell ill quite easily, recovering slower than others would. Her parents tried to keep her sheltered, but her twin sister fought against them in order to allow Pepper to live as normal a life as she could. Together, her family helped train Pepper to learn how to speak, despite many times growing frustrated that it never seemed to register with her, or she just didn't seem to have any interest whatsoever. When she was a young filly, her parents decided to give up on their efforts to teach her how to talk. Almost immediately following their decision, Pepper began to communicate in a much different, unique way: whistling. She taught herself how to get points across through a variety of different whistles and hums. Eventually, she developed her very own personal language soley comprised of these sweet little tweets and trills.

Growing up, she showed signs of incredible intelligence despite her overall development being slower than most. However, being teased and mocked for her communication preferences, her skills at making new friends were less than favorable. She struggled with it for a few years before giving up on the idea, straying away from trying. She decided to only focus on her love for music, listening to orchestral pieces and even dubstep. She would daydream often during classes, surprising her parents with her impressive grades because she didn't seem to be able to focus in class but somehow she managed to study and learn the materials just fine. She didn't like group projects though, and with her lack of interest in speaking properly, it was easy for her to gain special priviledges to do these projects by herself.

After graduating with flying colors and being taken by Cinnamon to a special performance by Octavia as a graduation present, she was able to focus on her dream: to become the world's first professional whistler, a new musician branch she wanted to be recognized that, in all of Equuis, hadn't been yet. Around this time, she met Livestrong who instantly befriended her and helped her go through various music auditions. She was there when each audition site turned her down because they were looking for singers or performers who played instruments, she was there to encourage her to keep chasing after her beloved dream. She quickly became a stronghold in Pepper's life.

Shortly after graduating, she met who would quickly become her best friend, Soul Chord. The two instantly hit it off, despite both of them being fairly quiet. Despite appearing timid, Pepper quickly took to the role of being the more confident and outgoing of the two despite never uttering a single word. She grew increasingly protective of Soul, especially when Soul's mother, Harmonic Chord, would come around only to belittle Soul and treat her badly. When they began to grow even closer as friends, Pepper realized that her feelings for Soul were no longer just friendly. She wanted more, and she decided to go for it. One day, she spoke for the very first time around Soul, revealing her extremely quiet, soft, airy whispers and mumbles to her friend as she confessed her love for her; she knew Soul had learned her whistle language during the time they knew each other, but she wanted it to be extra special since Soul hadn't ever heard her voice before. Needless to say, the two began dating after that.
