Marie is cold and aloof towards just about everyone she meets. She's very blunt, and always says what's on her mind without sugar-coating anything, which eventually lead to any 'friends' she made when she was younger getting annoyed by her bad attitude and leaving her. Since she'd rather just stay alone than be fake to make friends, or to make friends only to have them later decide they don't like her, she acts more mean that she actually is to intentionally push everyone away.

She's bad at reading social cues, has little empathy, and is often quite impulsive and reckless. She connects much better with Pokemon than she does with other humans, and is always kind to them (most of all to her Sneasel, Chu). Despite her love for all Pokemon though, her Sneasel is the only one she has. Since she only has one Pokemon, all of her time and effort that would be spent training an entire team is spent training only him, and he's pretty overpowered because of this. Marie is extremely confident in her abilities as a trainer, and prides herself on her ability to win again most opponents with very little effort. Of course, she would never admit that she purposefully avoids participating in matches where the odds are not in her favor.

Afer a while into her story, she begins to open up more to others and stop pushing them away (Felix was the catalyst for this, as she treated him downright rotten for a long time and he still stuck around, and eventually he gained her trust). She's still very blunt and bad at reading and talking to others, and can come across as cold, but that's just who she is...After she grows and matures, for the most part, she at least usually isn't intentionally a jerk to others. Or at least not all the time.
