I lived, and I was grateful for that, but I wasn’t the same as I used to be. Could I ever be?
― Adrienne Passer, Regards

Adrienne Viktoria Passer is a human-turned-vampire looking to get rid of her unwanted vampirism.

Appearance

Adrienne is pale with blue eyes and wavy forest green hair at approximately shoulder length. Her hair is naturally black, but is dyed green. Her eyebrows are undyed. Adrienne is of average height. She has scarring on the left side of her neck after Kenneth's attack on her.

Adrienne usually wears clothing that Sol purchases for her on one of his shopping sprees. She often wears black shirts or dresses, and she wore for some time a deep green cashmere scarf her brother Otto gave her, before she gave it to Mirdri Abanador. Adrienne likes cashmere, mohair, and wool, as well as viscose, but does not like acrylic fabrics. Her outfits from Sol are usually more elaborate than her usual fare, with one example being "a grey dress with three stripes of pale yellow crossing through it across the waist and skirt, and sheer black sleeves, a white blazer vest, and a pair of leather gloves that matched the [black leather riding] boots." This outfit also includes black nylons and a gold hairclip. Another consists of a "shiny blue jacket with a lining of red velvet" with wide white pants, a beige bustier with pearl details, and red shoes. After Benedicta Royce gave Adrienne a mohair suit jacket, Adrienne occasionally wears it as well, especially when visiting Benedicta.

Adrienne also wears a gold an emerald necklace she found, which Sol used to own, and a pair of earrings that matches.

As the dancer Princess Mirror, she wears what she describes as "a pair of high heels with fishnets, a short black dress with enough sequins for everyone at the venue, a tight suit vest, and a long pair of gloves."

She sometimes wears makeup, such as grey eyeshadow, blush, and lipstick applied in either black cherry or brick red shades. She wears foundation when she applies her other makeup, and sometimes covers her scar with it as well.

Personality

Adrienne is introspective and self-conscious, often considering how others might narrativize her. She is also very observant and draws quick but mostly accurate conclusions about the lives and situations of others based on little context, though at other times, she can miss evident details. She tries to be helpful in her friendships, partially because through an eagerness to please, and partially because she recognises that if she is useful to others, they will save a space for her in their lives. Due to this desire to please others, Adrienne is extremely susceptible to being hypnotized by vampires, which she is embarrassed by and tries to hide behind affected defiance if anyone mentions it to her. Adrienne holds onto resentment towards people who have hurt her, but tries not to make the bitter remarks she would like to if she recognises them as superfluous. Having grown up as the least rich of her friends, Adrienne feels mocked by displays of wealth that she cannot achieve. Adrienne is secretive about the impacts of various attacks on her, having traumatic nightmares but keeping them to herself, and has only let her brother know about the residual coldness physically present with her after a botched vampirism removal ritual. She is particularly concerned, also, with matters of identity, and exercises hypocrisy if her actions do not align with her perception of herself, or if she acts in a way she would condemn others for. Adrienne is also quick to develop feelings for people, though she does not like to admit to others the extent to which she does so. If there is a situation with troubling implications, Adrienne sometimes decides not to think about it at all. Adrienne can be petulant when she is upset or feels betrayed, and sometimes plans to leave the person or situation causing her to feel that way, though she tries to avoid ending friendships, because she feels she can't afford to leave any. She is aware of when she is being unreasonable, but finds it hard to act responsibly when in high emotions.

History

Adrienne grew up at 965 Passer Way in Ridglade Falls, the daughter of mostly absent parents in a middle class family. Her older brother Otto raised her for much of her life, and Adrienne spent time with rich friends with ornate mansions as houses. When she was not with rich friends benefitting from their homes and lifestyles, she spent time at the rock beach near her house, lying in the sun during the summer and dismembering starfish to see if their limbs would grow back as a pastime. During the early days of her adulthood, Adrienne started living alone, since Otto left to help his most recent client find safety and did not return. Adrienne took general studies at the university in Ridglade Falls for a while. She left her home when Ridglade Falls flooded and moved into a hotel for a short while, deciding to respond to a poster on the hotel bulletin board put up by a couple of housemates seeking someone else to live with them.

In Regards

After her house in Ridglade Falls flooded, Adrienne moved to another city. She moved into 333 Blue Flag Close with Sol Ryding and Kenneth Mond. During this time, she helped Kenneth reconnect with his daughter Mirdri, and became romantically involved with Sol after learning of his life back in Ridglade Falls. Adrienne hoped to find her brother Otto in the city, as well, having not seen him in years.

Adrienne spent nights at a bar to help Sol and Kenneth drink blood. Initially, she acted as a customer and went with people into the street leading to the bar when they would ask to take her home, where Sol and Kenneth would ambush them, but later, she took a job dancing there as Princess Mirror. She did not enjoy this, and she quit upon receiving criticism on her dancing. While she did get blood for her housemates, her blood was consumed by the main dancer at the bar, beginning Adrienne's track record for both having her blood drank and being afflicted by vampiric charms. On the night of her last shift dancing, Kenneth attacked Adrienne and drank her blood, leaving a large scar wrapping around the left side of her neck.

Adrienne wrote letters to Mirdri's stepbrother Nikolas occasionally, and agreed to meet him one night at a library. Before he could arrive, Sol's ex-girlfriend Nieva Crace ambushed her and interrogated her about Sol's whereabouts, as Nieva believed Sol caused the death of her next boyfriend Sidus. Adrienne would not tell her, and so Nieva lit Adrienne on fire. Nikolas arrived, as did Sol. Sol turned her into a vampire to prevent her from dying, and they brought her back to her old home, 965 Passer Way in Ridglade Falls, to recover. When Adrienne woke, she was distressed at being a vampire, and wanted to undo the process. While in Ridglade Falls, Adrienne and Sol went to the great hall where Sol used to spend his younger days partying, and Adrienne discovered a coffin made of either glass or ice, with Sidus Sagebrush inside.

Adrienne and Sol returned to 333 Blue Flag Close. Shortly thereafter, Sidus confronted Adrienne in the street and hypnotized her with a vampire's eye in a ring so she would reveal her connection to Sol. Adrienne recognised the eye as belonging to her brother. When she told Sol, he brought her to where Otto was staying. Adrienne learned that Nikolas had been Otto in hiding, and was angry and upset with him for having not told her that he was there the whole time.

As a break, Adrienne visited some friends. On her way back, she encountered Nieva. She led Nieva to the same small road where Kenneth had attacked her, on the pretense of showing Nieva that Sidus was alive, and pushed her down into the bushes. Motivated by her hunger for blood, Adrienne drank from Nieva and drank too much, killing Nieva.

Under the inebriating influence of garlic, which Sol gave her, Adrienne visited Otto and asked him to write letters to Sidus while pretending to be Nieva, so Sidus would agree to take Adrienne's vampirism. Before the first letter reached Sidus, he heard that Adrienne killed Nieva, so he followed her to a restaurant where they fought with dishes and chairs until Sidus put her to sleep and kidnapped her. He put her to burn in sunlight by a window, tied to a chair, until she lied and told him that Nieva was alive. Then, he drank her blood and nearly stole her energy with a ring, which she did not recover from for many days.

When Nikolas' true identity was leaked to the local newspaper, Adrienne disguised herself as Otto for a while, so Otto could move out of the home he stayed in before without suspicion. Then, Adrienne, Sol, Otto, Kenneth, and Mirdri left for Ridglade Falls, though Mirdri returned to her home after.

Otto's letters to Sidus successfully convinced him to take Adrienne's vampirism to build his own strength, as his health was failing. Adrienne arranged a meeting with Sidus in the great hall. Sidus made her bite him to begin the vampirism transfer ritual, but painful coldness and hunger filled her, and for relief and warmth, she could not stop drinking from Sidus. She took too much blood, and he died. Adrienne was relieved for Sol's safety from Sidus, but displeased that she lost what she thought was her only chance to get rid of her vampirism.

The vampirism left gradually, the ritual having worked before Sidus died. However, Adrienne often felt cold after, due to the lingering energy from Sidus. She continued to live with Sol, Kenneth, and Otto in Ridglade Falls, visiting her friends in the other city often.

Relationships

Sol Ryding

You’re the best thing that ever happened to me.

Sol is Adrienne's housemate and romantic partner. Their first meeting got off to a rough start, leaving Sol with the impression Adrienne didn't like vampires, but Adrienne found Sol immediately intriguing and helped him through his garlic-induced sickness. They became closer to each other and started dating, and Sol bought her clothes as an outlet for his shopping addiction. Sol was not far away when Adrienne was set on fire, and was able to turn her into a vampire before she had the time to die. He went with her to her old house and showed her the great hall where he participated in hedonistic parties, and accompanied her back to the city on the ferry. He has encouraged her to experiment with garlic, and the two have shared blood. Adrienne and Sol continued to be romantically involved after Adrienne killed Sidus, with Sol attributing his new safety to Adrienne.

Kenneth Mond

Do you trust me?

Kenneth is Adrienne's housemate, who asked her to deliver documents and letters to his daughter Mirdri before they could fully reunite. Kenneth is formal and reserved though mysteriously fond around Adrienne most of the time, but one night with the help of too much scotch and a dark road, Kenneth attacked Adrienne to drink her blood. Kenneth and Adrienne's relationship suffered after this for some time, though Adrienne eventually forgave him, mostly. Kenneth, otherwise, would take on a caring role with Adrienne, helping her recover from her unfortunate encounters with Sidus Sagebrush. He also allowed Adrienne to drink his blood when he noticed she was in need. Adrienne remained cautious around Kenneth, especially when alcohol was involved, but did not retain a strong dislike for him.

Otto Passer

I didn’t want you to see me like this. I wasn’t ready.

Otto is Adrienne's older brother. Because their parents were often absent, Otto mostly raised Adrienne himself. They were quite close, which made his departure for business matters extra difficult for Adrienne. She waited eagerly for his return home, and hoped to find him when she moved to the city. They exchanged letters back and forth for a while, albeit with Otto writing as Nikolas Daniel Abanador, so Adrienne did not realise she wrote to her brother instead of her housemate's daughter's paranoid stepbrother. Adrienne was upset and angry with Otto when she learned that he hid his presence and vampirism from her, but forgave him after. The two became close again, and started living together in their old home with some of their friends.

Sidus Sagebrush

Aw, it really distresses you, doesn’t it, that this was inevitable?

Adrienne knew of Sidus before they met, but that didn't stop her from being unaware that he was the man sleeping in the coffin that she found in an abandoned great hall and presumed to be dead. She woke him from his rest, and he knew she left the great hall with Sol. He went to the city and confronted Adrienne, drawing the truth about her connection to Sol out of her with hypnosis from Otto's eye frozen in a ring. Their next meeting involved Sidus kidnapping Adrienne and tying her to a chair to let her burn in sunlight after hearing that she killed his girlfriend, which further damaged their already awful opinions of each other. In their final meeting, they agreed to go through with a ritual that would transfer Adrienne's vampirism to Sidus, but Sidus wasted energy in tormenting Adrienne, and Adrienne drank too much of his blood, killing him.

Adelaide "Pandora"

I told you the blood flows easily here.

Adrienne met Adelaide as Pandora, the dancer at a bar, and soon fell for Pandora's vampiric charms in an exchange that resulted in Adrienne pressed into a mirror getting her blood sucked. Adrienne developed a crush on Adelaide, which she did not want, as being around Adelaide put her in compromised positions. She agreed nonetheless to work at the bar for a while alongside Pandora under the stage name Princess Mirror, an alias Adelaide gave her. Adelaide teased Adrienne less when Adrienne was a vampire than during her time as a human. Despite her distrust towards brothers, Adelaide was helpful in helping Adrienne find Otto, and in turn, Adrienne was able to assist Adelaide when Sidus stole her energy and put her in a coma.

Trivia

  • In the initial draft of the story she was in, Adrienne's earliest iteration burned to death on page 333 of the work, written on 13 March 2014. This page was chosen because she was created on 3 March, and appeared in the third book of the work. This is where the house number of 333 Blue Flag Close present in Regards was taken from.
  • Her full name is Adrienne Viktoria Passer. Adrienne was a placeholder name for the final version of the character that was kept instead of replaced, Viktoria was chosen due to its similarity with one of the character's many previous names in her development history, and Passer refers to the genus of sparrows by the same name, as sparrows were a motif she had in previous projects.
