Gabriel is a man reaching his middle ages who, ultimately, tries his best to escape from reality on a daily basis. At present day, Gabriel lives in a small, almost affordable apartment building with his dog and works full time at a pet store doing maintenance and clean up work. In his free time, he's either drinking or getting high alone, or he's drinking or getting high at a house party while trying to find someone that he can spend the night with. On the surface, he's just got general 'stoner' vibes about him. He's friendly and kind of aloof, soft in his tone and never seems to be all quite there, usually to be found with a half-lidded stare and and an occupied mind. While he's quick to make friends and lovers, he's reluctant to open up or share parts of his past with those around him. Early life for this man looks grim from the beginning. Once Gabriel didn't depend on his mother's breast milk anymore, she fled her family life and never looked back, leaving behind two children and a very confused, scared husband. Tanner, Gabe's older brother, was 7 at the time that their mother had left them, and he didn't take it well. He immediately blamed the new baby for tearing his family apart, and would only grow more and more resentful towards his sibling. Having no other source of income, the boy's father began to throw his life into work to try and support his children. He wasn't home often, and thus couldn't spend a lot of time caring for or supervising his kids. When he was home, he tried to show them love through small gifts, but his emotional support was stunted. His mind was plagued with guilt from not being home and pain from his wife leaving with no notice, and he wasn't sure how to console himself, let alone his kids. The entire family grew to be emotionally starved, and it manifested in very different ways for all of them. For the first few years of having almost no parental contact, Tanner and Gabriel had babysitters, usually detached teenagers as that's all that was in their scrambling father's budget. Once Tanner was 12, he became the babysitter. In the 5 years leading up, he had grown aggressive, taking on undesirable friends, started very young smoking, and had pushed all his negative feelings onto his younger sibling. In years prior he had only acted towards Gabe with neglect and yelling, but once the babysitter was out of the equation his abuse started to turn physical. With just the two of them in the house, Tanner would shove, hit, and slam his sibling into objects as long as their father wasn't around to stop him. Gabriel, of course, believed that he deserved this, but didn't know how to stop it. At the tender age of 6 years old, Gabe started to lock himself in his room while their father wasn't home to try and save himself the bruises. Two years later, Tanner started to be home less and less and Gabe started spending days after school with his friends. Two more years, and Gabriel would find out what Tanner was doing when he was out of the house. 10 and 16, Tanner had become a hardened, angry boy. The times he was home were more violent than ever, sometimes even when their father was around as long as it was behind closed doors. The abuse came more forceful, more verbal, and sometimes, if he knew he had a few days to get away with it, blades were added to the mix. Gabriel at this point was often wearing many layers of clothes, no matter the season, to try and hide the damage that his brother had done to his body. At the same time from this age onward, Gabriel started spending nights away from home, hanging out with older kids, and finding more 'family' in his friends than he could in his own house. He began to build a safety net in homes away from home, knowing that if his brother was going to be home, he had somewhere else that he could probably sleep soundly. Through the ages though, even his safety nets would begin corrupting. Trouble finds trouble, and once entering his teen years, Gabe would find himself in similarly slimy situations to his older brother. 14 years old, a lot of things started to change rapidly in Gabriel's life. He started attending house parties, was introduced to alcohol, drugs, sex, and an opportunity for a new identity. Transition came as kind of an accident, but pursuing boyhood was the only natural path Gabriel followed for the rest of his youth with no outside influence. Outside of transition, life was wild and he didn't have any control of it. Narcotics and alcohol became a prominent way to deal with the stresses of home, highschool, and body, and sex started coming as presents and currency--usually from friends a few years his senior. If he didn't have money for substances, he could always help someone get off. If he wanted a safe place to stay the night, he could always share a bed. Late 15 sexuality was second nature, blurring his views of consent and probably ruining his ability to form relationships later in life. at 16, Gabe dropped out of school entirely and spent his time either at home in a foggy drug induced haze, or was at parties almost all the time. The years following weren't coherent. The only way he really knew how to be was numb, drunk, and high. at 18 he moved out with some friends at the time who were in their 20s, becoming safe for a while from his brother who had left the scene years before to move to America and become fully integrated into gang life. The years entering legal adulthood would be hard. Gabe's father died, leaving him nothing to lean back on, and the people that he associated with would prove dangerous in different ways. He couldn't keep a stable job, and the idea of 'sex as currency' became prominent again, until he would live on his own and find a job that would keep him. Around 24, Gabriel started to try and build his own life and find security for the first time, or at least what he thought security might look like. He started taking earnest work and trying to find a stable place to live, leading him to his current apartment, which he rented by himself. Money was tight and making rent was hard most of the time, often leaving him without funds for food-- which he taught himself to take as a blessing. He already wasn't eating well, but he figured that he might be able to control the features of his body better if there was less to it, and his 'journey' into disordered eating behaviour began. For a while, Gabe skirted by with what money he could gain from unsteady work and donations or loans from friends. He didn't take his financial situation very seriously until he accidentally acquired a dog, a little golden mutt puppy being given away for free, how could he turn that down? Named 'Concrete,' the puppy became the most important thing in his life overnight. Having the responsibility of another life in his hands had him cleaning his house, working harder for more stable work, trying to keep track of money and in general taking just a little bit better care of himself so that he could take care of his new companion. He landed work at the pet store cleaning, getting a few perks for discount items and food for his four legged son, and things started to go a little smoother, but he still more readily poured money into his dog than into food for himself. Even with a more consistent thing in his life, Gabriel still frequented parties in an attempt to find connection. Detached one night stands and friends-with-benefits situations were still the only way he really knew how to obtain affection from anyone, but it would eventually prove to do something good for him. Nicola Greene would enter his life at one party, starting as a congratulatory BJ in the bathroom for a good job preforming would turn into a longer term friendship or something, resulting in Nicola eventually moving in with some goldfish. A present challenge in his life is the fact that his now gang leader brother ocasionally comes to town to try and taunt, hurt, or even sometimes if the mood fits, kill gabriel, forcing him to evacuate from time to time to someone else's house. |
Relationships
Nicola Greene
Weird lettuce-haired dude that Gabriel met at a party, who plays the bass pretty well. The relationship began with sexual reward, but since then they seemed to keep meeting at parties and eventually spending solo time together. Nicola presently lives with Gabe, sharing all space including the bed. They click in a lot of really good ways, and generally seem to have a silent understanding of one another's needs. He's just the roommate that Gabe kisses and sleeps with and loves, but they're not boyfriends.
Concrete White
A 5 year old lab mutt that Gabe found in a box after work one day, named in stereotypical racist native fashion as a joke, he named the little guy after the first thing he saw: the concrete on the road. He's much like a support dog, but he's absolutely Gabriel's hairy son and one of his best friends. He puts Concrete's care before his own when money is tight.
Brooke Terra
Being 7 years her senior sometimes skeeves Gabe out, but they're both adults. That's how he comforts himself anyway. Brooke is another friend that Gabe originally met at punk shows and parties and who was good for a fling, but now a days she's fun to drink and smoke up with and hang out. She's a pretty well mannered girl with a taste for the macabre and the wild side, but good to have around none the less.
Jace Black
The violence and percieved lack of sympathy that Jace gives off reminds Gabriel a lot of his brother. It's definitely not a good thing, and it doesn't get any better. They know each other to a degree, and that's probably enough. He's the drummer in Nicola's band, and Brooke's on-and-off boyfriend, so he still sees him around a lot.
Tanner White
Gabriel's older brother. Gabe is in a tight spot of both recognizing that Tanner is a genuinely terrible and evil person, but is caught in the space of still being his brother and remembering the positive memories he's had with him. In the end, he's still afraid of him for all the right reasons, and if he catches word that his brother is coming to town he makes it a point to hide. He still misses him though, somehow.
