Summary

Ricky was the second and last child born into his family. His sister died not long after he was born so he has no memories of her, and his parents rarely talked about her. The death left a rift between his parents, though. They didn't hate each other, and they rarely fought, but they lost their feelings for one another and began to drift apart, only staying together so long because of their son.

At the age of five, he met another kid, Jack, who quickly became his best friend. Where he was full of energy, Jack took things at his own pace, but their ying-yang personality worked well together. It was because of his friend that he got through the divorce of his parents -an event that happened when he was thirteen. This caused him to become a bit rebellious: skipping school when he felt like it and taking up smoking -a habit he would later try to quit. Most of this behavior occurred when he was staying with mom, and it grew worse after his mother got remarried. His stepdad was nice enough, but he never took the time to give the guy a chance, not wanting anyone to replace his real dad in any way.

When he wasn't at school or wandering around town, he could be found at the skating rink. It is not something he likes to admit, but his career on ice began with figure skating at a young age. He quickly dropped that sport and took up hockey instead, and he stayed with the sport for the rest of his high school life with the dream of becoming a professional hockey player. This dream was never reached. While working at his father's furniture store, there was an accident that cut his life short, killing him at 18.

Relationships

Jocelyn [ Friend ] Due to getting easily embarrassed around girls, Jo is the only female friend that Ricky has, and this is only because he thinks of her as one of the guys. He is oblivious to her affection for him, reading nothing into her mean comments and actions and taking them with a smile on his face. His nickname of little freak was given to him by her. She also helped him to stop smoking, and even though she made a habit out of putting the cigarette out on his arm any time she caught him with one, he was grateful for her help. He thinks nothing of the first kiss she gave him, taking it as her feeling sorry for him that he has never kissed a girl. The second kiss, which happened right before she left for college, left him confused though.

Jack [ Friend ] Ricky met Jack at a park when the guy helped him after he fell down and scraped his knee. Ricky was five, Jack was six, and ever since then, the two of them were best friends. As opposed to Ricky, Jack was more serious and rarely seemed to have a fun side, yet their conflicting personalities worked for them. The two of them spent time either wandering around town or practicing magic. Ricky enjoyed being Jack's assistant and helping him perfect his tricks. For the longest time, they were inseparable. A year before Ricky's death, everything about their relationship changed. Jack left without a word to him, leaving Ricky feeling betrayed and questioning their friendship.

Seth Pyrel [ Friend ] Upon first seeing him, Ricky was drawn to Seth. It did not take long for him to think of Seth as the leader of their group of friends, and he was more than happy to stand behind the older male. Thanks to the way Seth cared about the group, his respect for him only grew as time went on. After all his other friends were gone, Ricky let himself get lost in his sport and work. He rarely made time to meet up with Seth, but he still cherished their friendship until the day of his death.

Drustan [ Friend ] Drustan is the member of the group Ricky hung out with least as he preferred to hang out with Jack while Drustan hung out with Seth. Those times when Jack was not around usually ended up with him hanging out with Seth or Callum. Even so, there were rare moments when everyone was busy except for he and Drustan, and during those times, the two of them spent time hanging out, although rarely learned much about each other.

Callum [ relationship ] Being younger than Seth and Drustan but older than Callum, Ricky found it easy to hang out with everyone, especially the young Scottish male. Callum was the little brother of the group, and Ricky enjoyed teaching him about the finer points in life, such as sports and getting in trouble without geting caught, or at least being able to worm his way out of trouble if caught. He was also willing to talk to Callum about anything and had an understanding of the boy that most of the group did not.

Trivia

• Smoking helps him to relax. Unless he is puffing on a cigarette, his foot will constantly twitch until he moves some other part of his body.
• Except for Jo, who knows the truth, all of his friends believe him to have a girlfriend name Sheila. In reality, Sheila is his pillow. Jo loves to ask him about Sheila in front of other people, finding the unspeakable things he does to his pillow humorous.
• He can't pronounce the word alright correctly. When he says it, he leaves out the lr so it comes out as aight. He also has a habit of adding yeah? to the end of his sentences.
• Eveer since watching War of the Worlds as a kid, he's had a fear of aliens.
