Appearance

Darling is a sinner who had the unfortunate luck to gain traits of both a doe and a vehicle. She knows this is some cruel pun about her death - being struck by a car as a pedestrian - and hates when people mention it. She stands taller in death than in life at almost six feet. She had deep brown hair, as well as doe ears and a doe tail in a matching shade. Her body is mostly humanoid, though her knees and below shift into digitigrade doe legs with a fine dusting of fur, ending in sharp black hooves. Her hands are human, but her nails are naturally long and black. She has sharp, cutting teeth perhaps due to the sin that landed her in hell. She has pale parchment skin with sickly gray eyelids and freckles. Her yellow eyes always have at least a dim glow, but at full intensity can cut darkness for nearly a dozen feet and blind other sinners. Her most unfortunate feature is occasionally drooling motor oil uncontrollably, which is why she usually wears black. She has a locket of protection that she never takes off, initially charmed by Sugar, which Darling allowed Alastor to alter, much to Sugar's fury.

Personality

There is no real way to know what Darling is going to do. She's a compulsive liar, and acts too often on random whims. She is exceedingly selfish and hates having to share or do anything that she doesn't particularly care for. She is greedy for everything - food, money, time, attention and most of all entertainment. She needs constant amusement to keep her going. She has very little sensible fear, which is in part what Alastor likes about her. She has no concerns about the Radio Demon and treats him as casually as she treats everyone else. Her disregard for hierarchy and power has gotten her in trouble more than once - but Alastor is always there to bail her out, usually willingly. Despite her more negative qualities Darling would do anything for her close friends when it really matters. She knows she needs them in her life, and will sometimes find the kindness to sacrifice for them. She's always available to babysit Fat Nuggets, cover a shift at the cafe or scruff Blitzo when he goes too far with Moxxie. She's a little more prone to butting heads with Alastor than the rest of her close circle, and she does feel some level of irritation at him owning her soul. In the end, though, Darling does hold real affection for Alastor and can always be buttered up with a few of the right words.

Life in Hell

Darling wasn't shocked to wake in Hell, and largely her life continued. She met Sugar shortly after her fall taking up a position curating books at Sugar's cafe to sell. She and Sugar work together on occasion, but often one will cover while the other has time off. Darling is horrible at baking and making coffee, so generally the food side of things suffers whenever Sugar is out. Darling is also known to sample treats for herself when left alone too long.

Her interest in rare and unusual books has caused her to cross paths with Prince Stolas more than once, and she's quite fond of him. They have become tentative friends - though Darling does sometimes have to coordinate with Sugar to avoid Blitzo crossing paths with the goetia at the cafe.

During her nights off Darling often plays the innocent doe, letting men lead her off into dark corners, into their cards, into their houses to see how far they'll push things. She delights in continuing to tear out throats from those willing to push just a little too far, and often eats more than that. This drew the attention of Rosie, and it was through her that Darling met Alastor. Despite Sugar despising The Radio Demon, Darling took up spending half her time at the hotel.

She bonded easily with Angel, but Alastor was always her favourite. Though Sugar warned her time and time again, eventually Darling did sell her soul during one of the periods she and Sugar weren't speaking. She traded her freedom for the ability to call on Alastor whenever she needs him - which if she's feeling particularly petty can just mean when she doesn't want to get up and close a door. This was a bad move, and widely hated by all of Darling's other close friends - but she doesn't usually mind much.

The locket around her neck which initially had Sugar's enchantments on it to protect her is also eventually corrupted by Alastor - though it still functions to keep her safe even if the protection is a shade darker now.

Death

Darling was a young professional receptionist working in the funeral industry. She much enjoyed the long, quiet days with only the deceased for company. She lived a ways out of town in the countryside because it was cheap enough that she could afford a place to live. Her car broke down halfway home one evening after a late shift forcing her to walk home. The roads were dark, and a driver took a turn too quickly. If he'd stopped, Darling might've lived. He told himself it was a deer and kept driving. It took Darling hours to die, and cars still make her twitchy.

Sin

Early in her adulthood Darling was shy and conflict avoidant. She was thrilled when a man was interested in her for the first time, and was far too easily taken advantage of. During one such circumstance where a man was behaving particularly monstrously, Darling bit his throat. It only took one good bite to stop him, but she didn't let go. She tore until blood soaked her face and her hair - and she enjoyed it.She was tried and found innocent of any crime - but she lived with the knowledge that the only thing really keeping her from doing it again was a fear of getting caught. If she had lived longer she might've been able to work out a plan to avoid capture and have been able to really enjoy herself.

Relationships

ALASTOR

Alastor and Darling meet when he scents some familiar magic on her amulet. Though he is furious to find out Sugar has altered his Amulet at first, he finds an interesting companion in Darling. The two together cause both the hotel and Sugar numerous headaches, and delight in causing chaos. Darling adores Alastor, and the Radio Demon does catch himself feeling a bit sentimental about her from time to time. He can be thoughtlessly cruel, and did trick her into selling her soul - but he would never let anyone else play with what's his.

SUGAR

Darling's closest friend, though they argue they always come back to  each other in the end. They share a love of books, online roleplaying,  horror and pretty much everything else. Darling was bound to run into  Sugar's cousin eventually though she tried to keep them apart. They have  rough patches but there is very little that Darling wouldn't do for  Sugar. She strongly disapproves of Sugar's relationship with Blitzo and  is convinced that he'll hurt her just as badly as he hurts Verosika and  Stolas.

ANGEL

There isn't much Angel Dust and Darling have in common, but they somehow  developed a friendship when Darling started hanging around the hotel. A  powerful platonic relationship based on trust and support, Darling  never tries to be Angel's savior, and is one of his first choices of  company for his rare quiet night in. Angel does try to protect Darling  from herself and does everything he can to keep her from selling her  soul, which results in a huge fight when she eventually does.

ECHO

Introduced by Alastor, Echo and Darling bonded instantly on meeting, which was horrible news for everyone around them. Their prime hobbies together are causing problems on purpose and theft. While many of the jobs Darling asks of Echo are to procure specimens and books for the cafe, just as often she asks Echo to steal things to piss Vox off. He has no idea where all his mugs are going. Even Alastor tends to avoid the pair when they're together. Sugar is often on the wrong end of their exploits though they both love her deeply. Echo and Darling's main point of frustration is Darling's dislike and disrespect of Arackniss.

STOLAS

Many of Darling's rarest book specimens are procured by Stolas. While a sinner and a goetia prince are an unlikely pair, Sugar's high involvement with Blitzo has caused them to cross paths. Stolas and Darling are frequent companions - especially when one of them is at their worst. They are a constant support system for each other, which regrettably enables both of their worst tendencies. Though they care deeply for each other, they certainly don't make each other better.

VOX

Darling's similar features to The Radio Demon have not gone unnoticed by Vox. Nor the fact that she might be a weak point that could be used against Alastor. Vox turns his charming smile on her more than once to try and get her to turn on her deerest. Darling hates to admit that she finds his flat face charming, but sometimes will play along for a time with him. She can't stand Valentino though, so she never toys with Vox for very long.
