Shadowbrand is a Dreamseer who was born to a family of Winterpies and sent to the Dreamseer kingdom as soon as he was able to fly. He uses his Dreamseer gift of dream walking to teach students in the city of Elyton, where magic is honed and accomplished magicians of all sorts are sent to study.

Shadowbrand’s dream walking ability allows him to enter the dreams of another bird and basically do whatever he wants; he can take on magic and abilities of other birds, alter the dreamscape, and is pretty much godlike as long as he is within a dream. His actions cannot harm the other bird in reality, but the other bird has most of not all of their lucidity and would be able to feel and remember everything that happens. Shadowbrand has control of everything within the dream and even if the other bird realizes they are dreaming, they can’t change anything beyond their own abilities and can’t leave until they are released by him (although he needs rest too and therefore can’t keep doing this for extended periods). While he could use this ability to absolutely mess with anyone he wanted to, he mainly finds it useful for teaching students different magical techniques without the consequences of injury or other failure in the real world. He has terrible vision in reality — to the point where he can only see faint shapes and colors (just enough to get around okay generally) — but of course his dream walking allows him to have full vision in that setting and that’s usually good enough for him.
