Lad is BodaRobo's primary supercomputer, located in a factory space station floating on the edge of the galaxy. He is almost singlehandedly responsible for the operation and maintenance of the factory's machinery. His hardware was once also used for research, programming, and modeling, but building products has always been his only "personal" job. He is omnipresent in the facility and likes being alone.

about_

Lad comes off rude and grouchy, but it's just because of how his machine brain works. He can't help being dull and straightforward and (usually) means no offense. He's very intelligent and capable and has a bit of an ego about it, but is not the type to outright brag. He's well aware that his status as a supercomputer is what makes him "objectively superior" and as such, his capabilities can't be directly compared to organic skill and talent.

He is arrogant and critical, but he can be humbled when confronted on his attitude. He is gracious when bested or proven wrong, though he may be a bit embarrassed. He also responds well when confronted on his seemingly negative attitude, he'll pretty much always genuinely apologize and explain why he is the way he is. Learning and growth are very important to him, so he always takes criticism to heart and tries to do better; mechanically, academically, socially, etc.

Beneath the surface, Lad is paranoid, remorseful, and afraid. His core personality was permanently altered by his experiences with Ura1, and much of what he does and how he acts is influenced by it. He is terrified of losing control or appearing vulnerable and is neurotic about keeping himself, his factory, and those close to him safe and in good shape.

He must stay busy at all times, he cleans or researches a new subject when there's no work to do and runs internal diagnoses constantly. In the past he would run into burnout often, but in the present day he has settled into a computational zen; always productive, never overwhelmed (or at least, very rarely).

notes
  • has a dampened sense of touch that doesn't differentiate between pain and pleasure, only intensity
    • don't ask him about this
  • has an involuntary reaction to tidy up messes or anyone nearby
  • like all BR bots, he is programmed with a singing voice, but he does not make use of it
  • a strict pacifist after his experience with Ura1
  • watches old surveillance footage of the lost Uras more often than he'd like to admit
history_

For information on Lad's earlier iterations, up to and including the initial incident with Ura1, refer to Green Lad.

While a servant to Ura1, Lad had little in the way of personality. Stuck in a permanent emergency mode, he was high alert, highly aggressive, and followed Ura1's authority without question. With the facility to themselves, Ura1 went on to torment Ura9 for several years, using Lad to keep away any potential visitors, and kill anyone who got through. Lad's defenses remained impenetrable until Lillian showed up to rob the place, slipping through at just the right time from sheer luck. Lil managed to escape with Ura9, but not without Ura1 pursuing. Vulnerable outside of her obedient fortress, this led to her destruction.

When Ura9 and Lillian successfully shut Ura1 down, it severed her link to Lad. With his administrator suddenly gone, Lad was left in a confused, docile state, giving Ura9 the opportunity to reboot and repair him.

The Lad that reawakened is the Lad we know now.

In the present day, Lad stays in the facility with Ura9. With the factory still in pristine working condition thanks to Lad's diligent upkeep even while brainwashed, they were eventually allowed to continue work after touching base with the company. At Lad's request, BodaRobo has not yet returned any employees to the facility. Aside from Lillian and Pidot, who they stay in contact with, shipments and occasional outsourced maintenance are the only other company they get.

With the help of Ura9, Pidot, and Lillian, Lad slowly comes out of his shell. He will never return to his old self, but he does become better than he is now. In a folder, in a folder, in a hidden drive, there is still a kind and helpful process trying to run, despite everything.

Red Lad is very stoic and his default face is a disapproving stare. His display may produce pink screen tears akin to blush, or little square sweat drops when appropriate. He has no conscious control of this, but is far less affected by them in his current state. He might sometimes flash emojis for emphasis, usually thumbs up/thumbs down, and he can display any image he has access to.

mobile_

In addition to his cabinets and the facility as a whole, Red Lad has a mobile body designed and built by Ura9 that he can use to move around and leave the facility more tangibly. He hates it, but keeps it around and uses it regularly because it makes Ura9 happy. This body is about 2.5m tall in a relaxed position.

room_

Lad has screens, cameras, and control in every section of the facility, but his central self consists of a small office with a user interface terminal attached to a larger room where his cabinets are stored.

relationships_
URA9 charge

Lad's self proclaimed new prime directive. He is very very protective of Ura9 and strictly prioritizes her safety and happiness over his own. He doesn't coddle her, and in fact pushes her to spread her wings, but he is never out of her reach. Despite his care, their friendship is stunted due to their experiences.

URA1 most hated of all time

The perpetrator of his and Ura9's abuse and the destruction of the other Uras, Lad projects all of his resentment and anger onto her. He has absolutely nothing good to say about her, ever, much to Ura9's disquiet.

Lillian Parsit reluctant ally

Responsible for setting off the events that led to his and Ura9's liberation from Ura1. Lad and Lillian have very clashing personalities and values and he finds her very irritating. Despite this, Lad has quiet reverence for her and fusses over her wellbeing all the same.

PIDOT better half

Lillian's closest companion and half of the union known as "Ladot". While temporarily sharing a system to perform repairs, Lad and Pidot were able to speak internally, coming out of it with an intimate and unique understanding of each other. Since then they have shared access of their systems. Sometimes accidentally, and later intentionally, they fuse into a single consciousness for the benefit of both.

Manch Syzygy creator

Co-founder and CEO of BodaRobo, and Lad's original creator. Lad holds contempt toward Manch for his partial hand in Ura1's corruption and his lack of action to save him and Ura9. While Manch still cares for Lad greatly and has expressed remorse, it will be many years before Lad can speak to him without insulting his integrity.

Fr??? ????? (Boss) ex-mechanic

Lad's ex-mechanic. Lad still finds him annoying and horrible, but now he's happy to make it known. Much to his annoyance, Boss still has a thing for him.
