Plot

Early Life

Theresa never knew her birth mother. When she asked her father about it, her father would just say that she was a woman who he met while working, that she didn’t give him her real name, and that somehow she found him a year after they had met and handed him a baby. Then left without answering a single question.
Until Theresa was four, it was just her and her father living in New York. Then her father met a woman called Ann. He married her after a couple of years, and a few years later, when Theresa was eight, Luca was born. For three years after that, everything went by quietly. Then tragedy struck. The office that Ann was working part-time at caught fire. She didn’t make it out. All of them were devastated by grief, but Theresa was aware enough to notice that her father was acting odd. At first she blamed the heavy sadness they all were feeling, but it seemed different than that. He kept glancing over his shoulder, asking her if she’d seen anything odd around the house or inside it. Then he started disappearing for days, leaving them with babysitters or neighbors. Theresa did her best to pretend like nothing was wrong, even when people started questioning her about her father was doing. This went on for a little over a year.
One day he took them to an Aunt she had never meet, and that her father had never mentioned before. Then he got down and told Theresa that it would only be for a couple weeks, a month at most, and then he would come back and make everything better. He told her to look after her brother, then he left. Their aunt wasn’t pleased to have them with her, but Theresa blocked her out and tried to remind herself that they only had to stay here a month. A month went by. Then two. Then six. By the time a year had went by Theresa’s father was reported to be missing. The police searched for a while, but they couldn't find any clues about where he had gone. Theresa and Luca were permanently place with their Aunt, the only living relative that anyone would find for them. Over the next few years Theresa grew to hate her Aunt. The feeling was mutual. Their Aunt did not want them there. She had no interest in trying to raise them. According to her they were an inconvenience to her at the best, and were ruining her life at the worst. Theresa learned to avoid her during her bad days, and get Luca away too. She didn’t think their Aunt would actually do anything to them, but she wanted to be careful, and the verbal tirades were enough. She considered ‘ignoring your existence’ to be the best of her Aunt’s moods At least it meant they had a roof over their head, even if they had to sneak around to find food. So they managed to get buy. Theresa despised most of the boyfriends her Aunt turned up with, but the one that her Aunt took up with a man that put her hackles up immediately. He was sure of himself, loud, violent and seemed to go out of his way to find reasons to intimidate her and Luca. One day when Luca plucked up enough courage to talk back to the man, he lashed out and started to beat Luca. Theresa came flying him, shoved him away, and told him exactly what she would do to him if he laid a hand on her brother again. He responded by shoving her back, and then putting a gun in her face and telling her that if she doesn't back off, then he’ll kill her. And that she’d better not speak up to him again, or he would make her life hell. Luca was still scared, both for himself and for her. She couldn’t stand seeing him like this, and told him not to worry. She promised him that everything would be all right and they wouldn’t have to deal with the man again.
Less than a week later there was a frantic 911 call from what sounded like a little girl that suddenly cut off. When the police arrived at the boyfriend’s apartment, they didn’t find a little girl but they did find more than enough drugs and questionable porn on his computer to arrest him. The boyfriend kept protesting that idea we most of the drugs and the porn had come from, and that they weren’t his. The police didn’t believe him, but there was at least one rookie that noted he was really good at faking his surprise.
Although there was no proof, Theresa’s Aunt knew that she had something to do with it, and was furious. It turned into a screaming fight, and despite her protests of innocence, it ended with her Aunt throwing both her and Luca out of her house. Despite begging, their Aunt refused to let take them back, and they ended up wandering on the streets. Theresa did her best to try and keep her brother safe, to find food for them, to keep anyone from knowing what had happened. She was afraid that if someone found out they would be separated. She took to stealing to help support them. Sometimes she would steal designer clothes, then resell them. This went on for about five months, before she was caught as she was leaving a store.
Despite her terror, she fought back, tried to get away, but found herself easily overpowered. Then to her surprise, her captor did not turn her in. Despite being dressed like a security guard he just took her aside. The man, who she would later call Mars, was one of the leaders of a group called Mercury. And he wanted her to join. He said that if she did, they would see that she and her brother were taken care of. That they would be off the streets. She was skeptical, not wanting to join a gang or become a prostitute. Mars assured her that wasn’t it though. That Mercury was an elite independent intelligence agency, and that they’d had their eyes on her for a while. Although reluctant, she eventually agree to join them for her brother’s sake.
Mars kept his promise. Her brother was moved into a small apartment and had an old woman who would look after him. She was taken to Italy. She already spoke some of the language since her father had insisted that she learn it when she was small, mentioning something about her mother, but she found herself wishing she knew more as she was thrown into grueling training. It was sink or swim and she also was not the only candidate that Mars had picked out for limited spots in the group. It pushed her almost beyond her limits, but because of the unspoken understanding that if she couldn’t make it through, they would leave her brother in the streets again, this time with no one to look after him, she forced herself through. In the end, she and one of the other candidates, a boy named Veikka, made it. They were accepted into the organization proper.

Mercury

Mercury, they came to discover, was an elite shadow organization they dealt in information. They did spying and sabotage for anyone that could pay them enough. Also assassinations, for a very high price. No one ever discussed it, but everyone knew it.
Theresa worked in a three-man team, with her fellow trainee and a woman called Francesca. They operated mostly in Europe, going wherever the assignment was. Somewhere along the way, Theresa started enjoying the puzzle of getting into places she wasn’t supposed to be, and wasn’t satisfied by just the assignments. She started sneaking off to steal things on her own for the thrill of it during downtimes between missions and when they were waiting during missions. No one ever said anything to her about her escapades, other than not to get caught. She tried to sneak back and see Luca as much as she could. They never actually stopped her, but there was always that understanding that Luca would only be fine for as long as she did what she was told.
She tried to keep Luca as safe as she could despite that, and tried to keep him out of trouble as much as she could. When he showed an interest in ice skating, she encouraged it and would sell some of the stuff she stole on her own so that there would be money for his hobby without Mercury being involved. She didn't want him to end up in the shadows like she had. Although she liked her team, she was wary of some of the stuff Mercury was pushing them to do, and had noticed changes in the organization and in the way Mars treated her that she didn't like. She thought that she kept her suspicions to herself, but she had underestimated Mars. When Theresa was twenty-one Mars moved Luca from New York and everything Theresa had set for him, to a boarding school in Italy. It was warning, and a reminder who owned her. And what would happen if she did rebel.

Meetings

Until one day, when she was 21, a mission went sour. The information she had received was flawed. They were attacked the moment they reached their target facility, and they had to split up to flee. Theresa was able to fight her way free, but she was heavily wounded in the process. She ended up binding up her wounds as best she could in an alley, and grabbing a coat from a nearby car to cover her gear before she was found again. She found herself fighting a running battle before she managed to escape again. This time she stumbled out onto a busy street. As she tried to make her way through the crowds, she stumbled into a man called Dino Cavallone. Although she tried to apologize and move on, she stumbled again, and Dino moved to catch her. She realized that she was bleeding again, Dino noticed, and was going to get her a hospital but she begged him not too. She couldn’t afford to be found out. She said she just needed to sit down for a moment. Dino and Romario brought her to his car, and the last thing she remembered was sitting down.
Then she woke up again, she was a Dino’s mansion. Her injuries were treated. And she had no idea why he would go through all that trouble. She cursed herself for being so woozy that she’d trusted a random person on the street. Her first thought was to escape, but even trying to get out of bed made her nearly collapse. Adrenaline had made sure she hadn’t realized exactly how bad she’d been injured until now. Dino came in before she could do something rash and she finally found out the reason he’d called in a doctor to help her.
Before the mission that had gone sideways, she’d stolen a valuable necklace a local jewelry store had been bragging about. She’d been carrying it with her both for luck, and to show off her trophy for her team. Dino had found the necklace. And realized that she was probably the phantom thief ‘Arachne’ that had been active in Europe for the last few years. After all, she had taken to making little spiders out of wires and semi-precious stones to leave in the place of whatever she took. It had been all over the news. There was only one person who would still have the necklace on him. He was curious about her, and impressed by what she’d managed to do. He assumed that she had been injured in another heist, and she didn’t correct her.
He offered to let her stay until she was well enough to move again, but only if she told him stories about her heists. She wanted to protest, but with no way of moving she wasn’t sure how to refuse. So she just asked for her things back, and gave him a fake name she used during missions sometimes. Maybe if she humored him, she could find some way to escape after he dropped his guard.
Over the next few days, she did end up telling Dino about some of the heists that had nothing to do with Mercury. She ended up enjoying herself, which was a surprise to her. She liked talking about her heists since, illegal as it was, it’s something she managed to do on her own. Plus she managed to make Dino laugh a few times, and he has a few amusing observations to throw in too. It was scarily easy to relax here, even though she knew she should be on her guard. It was just so different from her own organization. Still she couldn't stay here forever. She had to check in, before they thought she was gone and something happened to Luca.

Guilty Respite

When she was finally able to limp out of bed she snuck off with her cell phone and managed to place a secure call to Mars informing him of her status. He scolded her for not checking in sooner. When she asked about leaving however,, he grew quiet and gave her new orders. Make an excuse to stay near the Cavallone family if she could. Find out what information she could and feed it back to him. Dino had taken the Cavallone from almost-ruin to a powerhouse in a few years. Figure out how. Then he hung up.
Theresa was startled by this, but figured an assignment was an assignment. Besides, she wasn't displeased about staying in a place like this instead of some other places missions had taken her.
She tried to follow orders at first. She hung around Dino more, her injuries still giving her an excuse not to leave. She tried to sneak into his office a few times, and was nearly caught but managed, she thought, to bluff her way out. Overtime though, she started to forget about what she was supposed to be doing. Instead she just liked hanging around Dino and his family. Mercury was a business, and outside of the people on her team, the members were discouraged from getting close to each other. Cavallone seemed different, in a good way to her. When Mars finally called again, demanded an update, that was what she told him. He told her to get something more practical aside from ‘Dino is very charismatic’, and reminded her that Luca was waiting for her. He would hate to tell him that his older sister had abandoned him.
Theresa quickly assured him she would do her best and find more. Soon.
Since she was healed by now, she made another excuse to stay, saying that she had her eye on something else in town, and that Dino’s mansion was a lot more comfortable than a hotel. She offered to let him have the necklace he had found on her as payment if he let her stay. He agreed, although later admitted he probably would have let her stay no matter what. She was entertaining to have around after all.
Once again, Theresa slowly started to forget what she was really there to do. She did go out, casing places and trying to find one it would be fun to try getting into. She helped out with minor Cavallone duties, and found herself just enjoying being around Dino more than she was willing to admit. After a while guilt crept up on her. She kept shoving it away, but eventually at one point she felt she had to do something, and admitted that her first name was Theresa to him. Once, Dino caught her on the phone talking with Luca, a risky thing but she wanted to tell him she was alive before Mars tried to tell him anything different. Before she knew it, Theresa found herself telling him about her younger brother, and where he was. She tried to make it seem like she was the one that was paying for his school, and that’s why she was stealing. It wasn't exactly a lie either.
After her long silence Mars called again, and told her bluntly that she needed to find out more information because they had a buyer. Someone was less than pleased with the Cavallone boss, but they weren’t going to make a move on his life without more information. They hadn’t paid enough for them to take up the assassination request themselves, but they wanted to know everything Mercury. Theresa could only stammer out an excuse and hang up feeling dazed.
She hadn’t considered an actual request coming their way. Before, a part of her had known that some assassins bought information off their group or used them before starting a mission. She hadn’t really cared though.
Now she cared.
She didn’t want Dino to die.

Warnings

She was so out of it that day that even Dino noticed. When he told her when he concerned, when he meet her eyes she couldn’t help herself, and admitted she thought someone was aiming at his life before she even realized what she was doing. She left it open, like a rumor she had heard during her other work. Since Mars had refused to give her any details, the only thing she could honestly say was that someone was shopping around for information about it, and she wasn’t sure when or even if they would make an actual attempt. Dino just smiled, thanked her, and told her not to worry, he was used to this. Now he would be on guard against it.
Guilt and stress started to get to her. She knew Mars would be expecting an update, but she wasn’t sure what to say to him. Refusing Mars outright wasn’t an option. Mercury kept a tight rein on it’s people. Refuse, and you disappeared. She knew of at least two other agents that had happened too. All distant acquaintances, but close enough that Mars was able to make his point clear. And she wasn’t just worrying about herself. She knew very well what would happened to Luca if she refused
So she started planning. Vague, half-formed ideas had been in the back of her mind for years but that she had never had the courage to carry out out any of them. Mars called again before she had decided on anything, and told her that their client had increased the fee. The assassination was on. She was the nearest operative. It was her to turn to carry one out. She went pale and started protesting that she couldn’t do it, she wasn’t trained as an assassin, she was only a spy. Mars coldly pointed out that the only difference between what she did and an assassin was that she never killed anyone directly. She had the skills.
She just needed to actually do it. And either she did do it or he would declare her a traitor to the organization. Then she would have a target on her back and so would her brother.
Or, he told her, he might just pick up her brother to replace her sooner than they had planned. The boy had promise, he said, and he probably wouldn’t have a problem doing what must be done.
That sent her cold all over. Although Mercury had been supporting them, she hadn’t let her brother dragged into the shadows with her and had avoided telling him exactly what she did. She wasn’t going to let Mars spoil that. She started solidifying her half-baked ideas into a single plan. She told Mars she do it, but give her three days. She wasn’t going on a suicide mission. She needed a way to make sure she wasn’t caught. He agreed, telling her that he knew she would see reason. She agreed with him. It was far past time she stopped hesitating and got away from him.

Preparations

She set her plan into motion. That night, she slipped out to pull two heists. One was the one she had been planning since she’d talked Dino into letting her stay. It netted her a small fortune in diamonds, including a valuable bracelet. The other job was one she had only been planning since the assassination information request had came in. She wished she had more time to plan for such a risky target, or at least had Veikka with her since he handled computers better and her target was a tech company. Still, she had to do this, if she wanted to break away. Mars had already admitted that he was going to drag her brother into this. She had to get him away before that happened.
The heist went almost perfectly, but she set off an alarm she hadn't realized was there at the end. She barely managed to escape. Still, soon she was back at Cavallone mansion. Dino’s men guessed she had been out ‘hunting’ and teased her about telling them about it. Not all of them knew exactly what she was, just that Dino trusted her, and that she had given them the information about the assassination attempt. That was enough to make them trust her in turn.
The next day, she picked up a conversation about Luca she’d started the other day, saying that it would be nice if he could get away from his school for a while. She managed to convinced Dino to send one of his men to pick up Luca, pretending that she was afraid of Luca having to get all the way to by himself. Before Ivan, who was picked for the job, left she caught up and gave him a token, tell her to show it to Luca if he seemed nervous. Then she gave him directions on where to pick her brother up. It was an area a bit away from the school. She lied and said they had already arranged to meet there.
Once she was sure that Ivan was on his way, she slipped off. She left a note for Dino, explaining everything, and apologizing for her deception. She left her diamond haul from before there too, explaining about her brother. The diamonds were payment for picking him up and keeping him safe until she came back. She also asked that if she didn’t come back, that Dino use them as payment for looking after him and asking that Dino try to keep him from doing anything illegal. If she did fail, she wasn’t sure that Dino would keep that promise but at least she was sure that leaving Luca with Dino, who was much loved by his men, was better than leaving him with Mars who seemed to treat all his operatives as his property.
Then she left without telling anyone. As soon as she was away, she called Luca on an untraceable cellphone she’d smuggled in to him. It wasn’t used often, but she’d pressed into her brother the importance of keeping it charged. She told him to take the knife she’d snuck in with one of his gifts, and get out of the school. Now. Also not to tell anyone, and to get to the place they’d set aside as a meeting place in case of emergencies. She gave him Ivan’s description, his name, and told Luca the man would have a token from her on him, and not to go with anyone else. No matter what they said. When he asked if it was serious, she just answered yes. It wasn’t until he agreed without hesitation or argument that she realized that Luca was already thirteen and wasn’t stupid. He probably suspected something himself. It made her feel guilty about all she had put him through. After this, she promised herself, she would make it up him.
She tried very hard to pretend that she would be there to actually do that.

Final Mission

After she hung up, she headed straight to Mercury’s headquarters. Instead of checking in with Mars she headed straight towards the server room that was at the heart of the building. There she set to work uploading her spoils from her tech company heist; a virus that would wipe out the information servers if Mars didn’t let her free. Veikka found her there, and tried to stop her, since he hated the loss of information. She ultimately won their fight, but the noise attracted the attention of Mars. When he learned what was going he was furious. She was a traitor, like her entire family seemed to be. And he would take out her brother too, just be sure he wouldn’t have to deal with them again. When she revealed her trump card, he pointed out that all he had to do to stop the virus was take her out before she could do anything.
She might have been able to at least stall Mars on her own, but he had called for reinforcements. His second in command, and the chiefs of the sabotage and assassination units came running. The fight was going against her, when Dino showed up out of nowhere. Squalo and Lussira were with him as well, Dino having used his ‘favor’ from when he saved Squalo’s life, and Lussira coming along because he was curious and it gave the Varia a chance to take on a ‘rival’ in the assassination field. When everyone wondered how he had gotten there, he admitted to Theresa that when he’d first picked her up, he’d slipped a tracker in her working outfit because he hadn’t trusted her. He had forgotten about it until Romario had reminded him. He apologized, but said that it had come in handy.
Even though it hadn’t shown him the exact building, he had followed her to the area and been able to make an educated guess from there. He assure her that ultimately Luca had gotten to his mansion and was perfectly fine, even if there had been a bit of trouble along the way. He told her that was why he was here, to make sure she saw her brother again.

Breaking Free

She thanked him, then started telling him about her scheme. Mars attacked before they could finish. Dino ended up taking on the second-in-command and told Theresa to finish things herself and take out Mars. The battle carried through several parts of the building, but ultimately, Theresa and her allies won. She was still going to destroy the information servers, but Veikka, who had regained consciousness, stopped her. After assuring he wasn't going to attack her again, he told her to listen to him for a second. After scolding her for overreacting just a bit there he offered her a deal. Don’t destroy the information. GIve it to him. He had no desire to fight with her anymore, but unlike her he didn’t have anything outside of Mercury. He would take it over, and do away with the assassination part of it. He had no interest in that sort of thing anyway. He would turn it onto an intelligence network that might do a bit of sabotage on the side.
And he wouldn’t tell anyone where she was. Since he was one of the few people in the organization that she actually trusted, she agreed. Squalo though she was an idiot, but since it didn’t have anything to do with him, he ended up leaving. Before she left, Theresa went to check Mars’ office, trying to see if he had known anything about her father or mother, since he had mentioned ‘her family’ specifically. She didn’t find anything about her relatives, but she did find her box animal there, and kept it.
On the way back to his mansion, she apologized again to Dino, who pointed out that she’d made more trouble for herself by not doing her job. And she had warned him, which was something. So he forgave her. Although, he pointed out she could have saved a lot of trouble if she had just been upfront with him and asked for help. Then the might have been able to come up with a slightly better plan than charging in. After that, Theresa started wondering where she and Luca would go from here. She had essentially sent them out on the street, again.
Dino just said that there really wasn’t a reason for them to leave. He didn’t mind having them around, and really he kind of wanted Theresa to stay anyway. After a bit of thinking Theresa decided that it wouldn’t hurt to stay with him, at least for a bit.
