A smug, casual, aloof exterior belies a good heart; while Dai is quick on the draw with sarcasm and smart remarks that often make him seem callous, the reality is quite far removed. Despite being rather more reserved about it than other hero-types, he is kind, caring, and more than willing to lend a hand wherever he could possible offer it. No matter how big or small the deed, he acts humble in the face of praise, often foisting the responsibility of having done a good thing on someone, anyone else.
Praise is one thing, however, while physical rewards are quite another. Regardless of his tendency to put others first, Dai is very much not one to forget himself in the midst of all his adventures. A huge fan of finery and expensive things in all forms, he doesn't even try to pretend the financial benefits of his escapades aren't--and have not always been--an immensely enjoyable aspect. While still liable to help those in need even regardless of a reward, it's plainly obvious just how much the promise of compensation further piques his interest.
Of course the confident, well-put-together exterior is like 5 seconds away from crumbling at all times but if we just push that alllll the way over there and never look at it, surely it will be fine. Probably.....

i feel like im never gonna formally write this out so we're getting a bullet point list for now
- born and raised in the black shroud. lived with his family and everything like normal for a good while but was always very restless and curious about. basically everything and everyone. wound up leaving his family group in his late teens to start exploring and satisfying his curiosity.
- his obvious first step was coming to gridania but, being a bit of a dickhead (on top of. erm. Misconceptions about miqo'te hunters) he didn't really get on with a lot of people at first. learns about adventuring and pretty quick jumps onto that, given he's pretty handy with a bow
- turns out adventuring suits him very well, also having gil is AWESOME and people love you when you do stuff for them, which in his little mind were basically the two best things ever.
- he's doing this for a while until Things Happen and he winds up meeting yda and papalymo and getting swept up into All That Bullshit. he really tries very hard to divest himself of the title of Warrior of Light over the course of ARR but he really cant be rid of it. though he has even MORE gil than before AND even MORE people think hes awesome so he's like. well fine. i'll stick around. not like i care.

- early in his travels he pokes around with being an arcanist; he's never really tried much magic before though he was, of course, curious. turns out it suited him very well and leads him pretty dirctly into becoming a summoner. picks up being a red mage just abt the same way the ingame quests take place. at this point he barely even considers picking up a bow again.
