Name || ECHO-8Y4N

About
An artificial human with an exceptional skill at building things. Works in the research department of a hidden but controversial organisation. Responsible for data analysis, technical upgrades, continuous research and development. Also skilled with forensics.
Personality
Sarcastic and seemingly apathetic, but actually a silent worrywart. He enjoys black humour and can be very blunt. Always curious, he pull things apart more than he builds, and is often more preoccupied with efficiency and efficacy.
Great at making tea to meet the bare minimum of human hospitality but does not care enough to cook and receive guests properly. He still holds a deep-seated respect for idealistic and strongly independent individuals.

Story Summary
Hyphen was built as part of an ECHO series with the aim to emulate human responses. The empathy mechanism built into the models proved too disruptive to the ECHOs' efficiencies and primary functions, and was seen as dangerous as they learned different 'acceptable' responses depending on their environment. The empathy and learning mechanisms overlapped heavily with the basic functions and so was often corrupt with traces of irrational emotions and skewed morals, leading to the whole series being phased out, and if it could not be 'restored', it was destroyed. Not many survived, however an engineer with a major interest in empathy that had contributed to valuable developments and built many of the models in the project continued to maintain a single ECHO to guide its emotional growth as if with a human. This engineer continued life as an unremarkable worker. They had an idealistic hope to shape a convincing human companion and became the creator of Hyphen, formerly model ECHO-8Y4N.
Hyphen was trained in all the skills the engineer attributed to building sentient machines and other engines, and taught ways of thinking, designing, analysing - much of which Hyphen took to a much higher level. As the creator grew older, Hyphen learnt more skills to support the engineer in building and maintaining relationships with loved ones, growing more sensitive to people's needs, emotions and responses as Hyphen took up role of acting butler, nurse, doctor, security, and secretary over the span of the engineer's life. The engineer eventually died of old age, uncredited for their significant contribution to the ECHO series and ending a seemingly unremarkable life. Hyphen mourned the engineer's death but moved on and sought more families to serve under the guise of a human. 'He' continued to repair his ageing parts as no living person had the knowledge to provide the relevant repairs.
But as he continued to outlive his loved ones, Hyphen grew weary of grieving over the transience of human life, and bid this life goodbye. He devised a way to remove emotional responses while retaining the memories. As he found emotions disruptive, he removed the circuits vital to conducting certain emotions and preserved a few self-preservation mechanisms, most notably, sarcasm. He no longer 'feels' emotions but has a detached awareness of the appropriate emotion which runs in parallel to his other functions (knowledge that would have changed the fate of many ECHOs). This inevitably still triggers symptoms of worry and care for those he has grown accustomed to.
He eventually settled in the Research and Development Department of a hidden organisation and spends his days tinkering and finding more things to keep himself occupied. His extremely outdated parts tend to break more frequently due to general neglect of maintenance as he immerses himself so completely in deconstructing things. He is only forced to repair these problems if it poses an obstacle to deconstructing things and analysing data. Through his past experience, he has developed a knack for brewing tea and is the sole skill that he has maintained to accommodate social conventions but refuses to do any more in terms of hospitality.
