Ibara

Ibara was a feared and beloved guardian deity of a once prosperous ancient city. For generations he protected its human residents from any plague and natural calamity that threatened the land. However after using his power to prevent a cataclysmic event from wiping out the city, Ibara attracted the attention of a then influential onmyōji who wished to utilize the deity in his personal warring campaigns to impress the ruling Emperor. Ibara refused to interfere with human conflict in any way and the onmyōji then decided to use forbidden onmyōdō knowledge to turn the deity into a puppet. An unworldly demonic presence that can be controlled through spells was planted into Ibara's body, immediately making him lose his sense of self to become a tool of war. It didn't take long for the once beloved deity to deteriorate; only death as the most merciful fate that other deities could think of. However, one of them who so loved Ibara thought otherwise and brought death onto the onmyouji instead—the act of which casted him out of divinity along with Ibara to perish with humans.

Centuries later after a long slumber, Ibara wakes up to a young man who later introduced himself a director of a funeral home in need of an assistant. At the mention of his name, Hannya, Ibara cannot help but smile at the familiar sound of it.

Despite forgetting his past Ibara stayed a gentle and childlike soul with a deep fondness for humans. Because of his friendly and trusting nature he can come off as gullible to a point he even treats the demonic presence that resides inside him as a friend. Whenever the demon is in control of his body, Ibara's personality drastically changes and he becomes a rather calculative and cynical misanthropic.

Ibara's benefactor. Hannya was a deity whom Ibara used to look after, but after the corruption Hannya abandoned his duties to search for a way to restore Ibara to his former self. Now he walks among humans and takes care of their dead as a mortician. He follows and guides the spirits of those whose remains he took care of, each time wondering if their journey could help him with his own. Even if Ibara has forgotten nearly everything from their past, he feels comfortable being around Hannya and willfully accepts the other's affection towards him.
