If you spend your whole life waiting for the storm, you'll never enjoy the sun.

About

Once a Tempest Sage, Faolán has become otherwise disillusioned with the Divine, specifically the Storm God himself, and has long since rejected him as their god. After having their horns irreversibly cut down and part of their tail cut off by Kingdom soldiers, Faolán abandoned any faith they had in the the Gods to keep their respective domains safe from the brutality of the kingdoms and the ascendant gods.

They have little regard and little respect for Gods, but they’re not rude about it and usually do not address it unless prompted, believing that while the Gods are unfair and unjust, people deserve to be allowed to worship them if it makes them feel better- kind of views worship as a placebo, believing no Gods are going to step in against Life and Death.

Personality

Despite the atrocities done against them, Faolán is polite and cordial, if not quiet. Faolán comes off as a bit overly-serious and takes things a bit too literally or seriously in certain situations.

They're quick to get lost in thought when left to their own devices, and it's not uncommon to find them deep in thought or meticulously organizing things in their store when others aren't around. Holds themself to a pretty high standard in terms of being and acting presentable.

Design notes

Faolán is somewhat on the smaller side for a tiefling. Their skin has faint marks resembling water-like patterns that tamper off. They have light-colored freckles on their face, legs, and their shoulders.

Faolán is missing half of each horn and the tip of their tail. They have a few scars on their side and back, but most of their past injuries have faded. Their eyes are traditional tiefling eyes- no pupils or sclera. Faolán also wears a decent amount of jewelry, specifically rings.

story

Faolán doesn’t remember much of their past, most of it blocked out due to the trauma of their horns and tail being cut off, but does remember their parents and being raised and primed to be a Tempest Sage.

Faolán does still look back at their upbringing fondly, even their time spent learning about their Domain. They hold a level of respect for the domain that came before them, for the good that the people did for those on the seas.

Faolán now runs a small shop on their community selling mostly little baubles- primarily items believed to be affiliated with or used for magic and spells. (Basically a store of spell components). They are regarded otherwise fondly by their community, as most are, even if some still believe them to be an active follower of the Storm God.

They currently live under the belief that the Storm God had abandoned the surface years ago- back when the domain moved underground- and instead watches over only those who heeded his order to hide below the earth, leaving those who did not to instead suffer at the hands of the kingdoms. They believe the Storm God stopped selecting and speaking to the Heralds after the Crowning because he did not want to speak to or help his domain.

Trivia

  • Faolán channels their magic through the stones they keep on their person- primarily the ones on their staff.
  • Faolán's magic has dampened over time, to the point of them typically relying on spell components to be able to cast magic on the rare occasion that they use magic.
  • They still carry their tome of Domain lore, if only because it was passed down for generations. They keep it more out of respect for those who came before.
  • Some believe Faolán is still holding out hope for a Great Usurping, that some part of them is holding onto a sliver of hope that their God will return from his great silence, alongside others who stood back and watched, and do something about the injustices of the world.
