atropos was once of the fairy hoovedfolk, one who went by the name of lumiel many centuries ago, their monsterlike appearance the result of a necromancy spell gone wrong. in a failed attempt to resurrect their deceased lover using the highly forbidden spell, they instead took on the appearance of death itself—his wings grew dull and ashen; candlewax horns grew from his skull, a blaze of hellfire suspended in between; his golden hair took on the appearance of ghostly fog, as if trapped in limbo between life and death; the charms, trinkets, and candles used for the spell painfully fused with his body...once a lively and outgoing young man who loved to laugh and to feel sunlight's warmth on his wings, now forced to live nocturnally lest he be blinded by the very sun that he used to love so much. having inadvertently gained immortality as a side effect the spell, atropos is cursed to live in the absence of his beloved for the rest of eternity.

as advisor and consult to caelan, atropos helps keeps the prince in check, offering their input into any decisions he makes (i.e. making sure he doesn't do anything stupid or to the detriment of the kingdom.) he also serves as an oracle, with his preferred method of divination being carromancy. typically stoic, devoted to his role with a no-nonsense attitude, there are rare moments where he can be more personal—especially around those he feels at ease with—making lighthearted comments and even the occasional joke.

atropos' eyes are incredibly sensitive to sunlight and thus, he seals them with wax during the day so as not to let even a single beam of light in. they "see" via their ability to sense heat and vibrations (it seems their "horns" are functioning antennae) but come nighttime they use their magic to lift the seal off their eyes, allowing their acute night vision to take over.
