Story

Born from two human parents, Lahri grew up in an unremarkable town. Unlike her fellow townsmen, she was born with white skin, white hair and red eyes. This made many afraid of her, and gave her the nickname “corpse girl”.

From a young age, Lahri thought her nickname to be the funniest thing. Her albinism was to her a sign that she was not just different, but better than anyone in town. She alone had been chosen by the gods to be extraordinary. All the “normal” children around her had gotten the short end of the stick and would be stuck living an ordinary, boring life in the middle of nowhere.

Lahri’s attitude together with her strange condition made her nothing short of unpopular. While she never admitted as much, the alienation did cause her to get lonely sometimes back when she was still a child. In her loneliest hours, Lahri sought comfort in the gentle light of the moon. She felt the moon was just like her; pale, beautiful and powerful.

Slowly but surely, Lahri’s fascination turned into worship. There was no church of Selûne nearby to teach Lahri her ways, but on one fateful day, she was able to buy a book on Selûne’s beliefs from a travelling merchant named Koek. There was some kind of otherness about him that spoke to her, or maybe it was just the fact that the townspeople didn’t seem to trust him. Being fascinated by his books and worldly stories, Lahri asked him if he could stop by again if he happened to be travelling through the area.

And thus Koek became a returning factor in Lahri’s life. They didn’t get particularly close as their time together was short, but Lahri came to look forward to his visits. Although she didn’t learn much about Koek himself, she did learn a lot from him and all the books he had for sale.

Having always known that she was destined for greatness, Lahri set off on a journey to explore the world she had been reading about shortly after she had turned nineteen years old. In the four years which followed she wandered through the Sword Coast North region without any particular destination in mind. Despite this, she never felt lost, perhaps because she always had Selûne’s light and the stars to guide her.

Lahri did odd jobs here and here, mostly tasks that needed a strong pair of hands, and proved that she wasn’t all talk. Among other things, she learnt that people were a whole lot more friendly towards her if they had a few drinks in their system. She often found herself at bars, making “friends” quickly by giving the whole establishment a round. Feeling right at home between dirty-mouthed, drunken men who had worked their asses off, Lahri unconsciously copied their speaking mannerisms and overall attitude.

With an even worse personality under her belt and a few cheap tricks to becoming popular in the back of her mind, Lahri was destined to wander into Phandalin and meet up with an old, friendly, untrustworthy face.

Dragon of Icespire Peak

Warning! There will be big spoilers for the Dragon of Icespire Peak campaign and slight spoilers for the Curse of Strahd campaign beyond this point.

Through Selûne’s guidance or perhaps by fate, Lahri and Koek were reunited at the Stonehill Inn in Phandalin. Not having seen each other in years, they exchanged stories over a few drinks. They quickly realised they had both come to Phandalin looking for a way to make some money.

They asked the bartender if perhaps anything unusual had recently happened in the Sword Coast area, which the man in question scoffed at. He shared that some folks claimed to have seen a dragon flying through the high clouds, but that he didn’t believe them. Lahri found this to be hilarious as she claimed: “Dragons only appear in fairy tales.” Koek agreed with this wholeheartedly and shared a good laugh with her.

Thinking they weren’t going to get any more useful information from the bartender, Lahri and Koek searched for a job board and were delighted to find one. Their delight soon turned to displeasure, however, upon realising every job on the board had something to do with the white dragon. While their adventure together could have ended right there, they decided that they could profit from this supposed dragon by doing some cushy jobs.

While doing these jobs they found they worked pretty well together. With Lahri’s loud heavy armour and her even louder personality, she was always in the spotlight, allowing Koek to sneak up on enemies from behind and stab them in the back. They were chaotic and destructive, but at the end of the day, they got the job done.

Everything seemed to be going smoothly until one day they returned to Phandalin to find it mostly destroyed. They nonchalantly passed destroyed buildings and didn’t pay the wailing of those who had lost loved ones any mind as they made a beeline for Harbin Wester, the town master of Phandalin, to claim their reward.

Harbin, who had turned into a scared shut-in since the first time the dragon had been spotted, had his brother explain to them that the dragon had come and caused all this destruction to the town. Lahri and Koek of course dismissed the notion but decided to ask around town about what had happened just to make sure they were right. While, according to them, they didn’t find any concrete evidence they were dealing with a white dragon, they did find it very odd that everything that had come into contact with the town’s assailant was releasing some kind of black fog and slowly disappearing.

They continued talking on jobs as usual but were almost immediately punished for their behaviour. Koek died at the mandibles of an ankheg, an enormous many-legged insect that can dig deep tunnels underground. Just when Lahri and Koek thought they were safe an ankheg had burst from the earth and crushed Koek in its mandibles. Lahri was able to finish off the ankheg before it claimed her life, but it had already been too late for Koek.

To Lahri’s shock, the same black fog that they had seen in Phandalin claimed Koek’s body. She regretted what had happened greatly, and didn’t even have a body to mourn over. She gathered her courage and decided to head back to Phandalin, but then the same black fog appeared, and a halfling stepped out of it. The halfling that emerged claimed he was none other than Koek and that he had been sent back by a woman who was adorned in raven feathers. Lahri asked the halfling if dragons exist, and when he replied they only exist in fairy tales, she knew he was the real Koek and not some imposter.

They would soon learn, however, that dragons are in fact real. The white dragon brought them a long overdue visit while they had been on the road to their next destination. It had noticed their horse and was approaching it with the intent of eating it. It was very uncharacteristic of Lahri and Koek to put themselves in danger, but perhaps in a last act of kindness, they engaged in combat with the dragon in an attempt to save their horse instead of running away or hiding like they should have done.

The white dragon exhaled its cold breath over them, killing them instantly. Immediately afterwards, Lahri found herself surrounded by a thick black fog. When the fog dissipated, she was standing before the Raven Queen, the goddess of death. She told Lahri that it was not yet her time and that she should go back. Lahri got surrounded by the black fog again. In the black fog, she saw Koek one last time, before he disappeared forever.

Lahri stepped out of the black fog as another human woman, this time as one with blond hair and green eyes, and arrived at the exact spot the dragon had ended their lives. She was furious at the dragon and herself. In a blind rage, she walked straight past someone who had seen her reincarnation. This person followed behind her and introduced himself as Prul, a wood elf and warlock of the Raven Queen. He refused to leave Lahri’s side because he thought her reincarnation to be a sign of his queen.

Lahri, noticing her different reflection, introduced herself as Lahria. She explained that if Prul wanted to tag along, he was going to help her kill the white dragon. To her surprise, he agreed to this.

Now with a vengeance and a new ally, Lahri was ready to take the pleas of the people of Phandalin more seriously. Lahri realised that just two people couldn’t possibly face a dragon alone, so they added a hireling to their team, a halfling warrior called Quinn Hightopple who likes to punch people in the groin. Together they successfully went on every side quest they happened to come across to grow stronger, gain more powerful weapons and prepare for their final fight with the white dragon.

Through these side quests, they also were able to figure out the location of the dragon’s lair; the Icespire Hold. Few people know of the existence of the hold, but a cloaked stranger that knew its location just so happened to arrive in town at the right moment. After some convincing, the man agreed to take them there. When they arrived at the hold, however, the man revealed that he and his companions couldn’t have anyone know about the place.

Prul tried to deescalate the situation by explaining that they were there to kill the dragon and that after the beast had been slain they would be on their way again. This caused the older man in the group to say that they may leave, but that they couldn’t return to the hold or fight the dragon.

Lahri couldn’t agree to these terms. She remembered how the cloaked man had told them to be very quiet earlier because the white dragon was sleeping but could easily be woken up. A smirk rose to her lips before she used Thaumaturgy to make her voice boom three times as loud as she yelled: “We are here!”

The cloaked man and his companions cursed as they all heard the white dragon wake up and roar in the distance. Moments later, the dragon busted through the ceiling and an exciting fight between three different parties begun. Lahri, Prull and Quinn used their wits to direct the dragon's attention and attacks to the other group. The dragon made quick work of taking them down, but before he could redirect his attention, Lahri and Prull had already cornered him with powerful spells.

After a long journey, during which a good friend had been lost, Lahri had finally defeated the dragon whose very existence she had ridiculed. However, Lahri barely was given any time to celebrate with Prull and Quinn, for suddenly the same thick, black fog Lahri had seen before engulfed her. Thinking she had just been fighting on with borrowed time, she prepared herself to come face to face with the Raven Queen again. Instead, a handsome man riding a flaming horse appeared from the fog. They locked eyes as the man held out his hand to her and asked her: “Are you the one I’ve been looking for?” Without a second thought, Lahri took his hand.

This man turned out to be Strahd von Zarovich. He took Lahri with him to Barovia where she remains to this day. Strahd thought her to be the reincarnation of his cursed beloved, but when she didn’t turn out to be her he turned Lahri into a vampire spawn and his minion.

Trivia

Lahri and Koek’s names together sound like the Dutch word ‘lariekoek’ which roughly translates to ‘nonsense’ or ‘foolishness’.

Lahri took on the nickname Lahria after her reincarnation. Prul and Lahria’s names together, sound like the Dutch word ‘prullaria’ which translates to ‘knick knacks’.

The first time Lahri was played around a table was when she was an NPC for Curse of Strahd. She was tasked with tricking the PCs into welcoming her, a vampire spawn, into a church, which she succeeded at much to her own delight. Later, when the option to play as a PC for the Dragon of Icespire Peak campaign came up, she received a backstory and an epic quest.
