story
home
- grew up in a small somnis village.
- a piris man came and seeked refuge with his sompir son, caspian. griffin's family took them in.
- griffin and caspian grew up together with griffin teaching caspian all about somnis life and caspian teaching griffin magic.
- when they were 10 years old, their entire village was raided. the guff house was the first to go, caspian and griffin hiding inside and watching caspian's father killed right before them.
- griffin and caspian were taken by the administration
selection
- griffin and caspian were seperated for reasons not specified to him.
- griffin made a groupmate, a piris girl younger than himself who was making a big fuss.
- ashley was one of many piris from the neighboring village. she was loud, rowdy, and not ready to leave her home. griffin sat and comforted her and the two quickly became friends.
- the two learned of a process called "selection", which both somnis and piris would participate in. it would determine whether the child was suited to join the academy by level of magic (rune or summon). if not deemed worthy, they would be sent to the chamber and sentenced to sleep.
- they learned that it was very rare for a somnis not to possess magic, and even rarer for a piris to posess it. the two feared for ashley's life
- they went through selection together hand in hand. the two passed, griffin with traces of summon magic and ashley with rune. ashley was the only piris that year to pass selection.
- spotting caspian at selection, griffin tried to talk and reach out to him. caspian looked different, broken. he refused to talk to griffin, stating that he should have never gotten close to him in the first place before running off.
- the children are given their first dosage of iroka, which will help prevent them from falling prey to the sleeping. the primary effect of iroka is the ability to restore energy, thus actual sleep is not required for the body to recover. once given to the body enough times, iroka will make a person not need sleep at all. however, going off of iroka is dangerous and requires time and precision so the body doesn't react to it all at once.
- not taking iroka daily is considered one of the highest offenses. it is the first thing all students of the administration must do, or they will be sent to the chamber.

- flash forward six years
- griffin has been working within the administration. he's been training hard to become a scout, as this is the only way to survive once you've become enrolled
- not having been allowed outside of academy walls, griffin and ashley search for a way to see the outside world.
- ashley discovers a way to use runes and a crack in the walls in order to transport them outside
- ashley and griffin find a small meadow and a house for one person. they find journals and writing that they can't understand. ashley discovers that it is a code, and works to decypher it.
- griffin and ashley, now outside of the border, become increasingly more exhausted. griffin goes to try and take a dose of iroka, only for ashley to stop him
- she says that in one of the entries, she can't fully read it, but it keeps saying "iroka" and "danger".
- the two decide not to take the dose of iroka for the first time in six years. they debate what they should do and if this will kill them. griffin states that being in the administration will kill them either way, so maybe heeding the journal's words is the best option.
- they fall into a deep sleep full of terrors and nightmares, ones only described by those cursed by the sleeping.

best friendthe first friend griffin made. the two met at selection and have been nearly inseperable since. ashley is griffin's number one confidant, and the two are working hard to ensure that the administration is destroyed. they also happen to know the secret between the sleeping, and that the curse affects everyone, not just piris.
caspian "thorn" willows
enemy/rival, former friendgriffin's former childhood friend. the two were in the same collection group and witnessed their entire village get destroyed. something happened to caspian after selection and broke their friendship for good. caspian seems to be the only one who can see through griffin's fascade, and actively searches for a way to stop his schemes.
when the two begin to work together, the road is rocky. they argue constantly, and both parties feel as though the other betrayed them. ultimately, they share a bond that cannot be broken and care for each other immensely.
