Wickam Crossgane

dgy5kzc-7b48b536-2838-4298-8ffd-5c7b5e1e

𝔗he most infamous pirate of his time, Wickam Crossgane is the captain of The King's Fate. Besides being known for the countless crimes he and his crew committed, he is also known for the atrocious things he does when it comes to the royal navy. Only a few live to tell the tale of his bloodthirsty rampages. If it was on him, he wouldn't leave any survivors.

He took some control over Crossgane (an island he named himself), which is considered one of the major centers of piracy. The island is in an area which not many maps show, giving pirates advantage when it comes to hiding. A lot of illegal goods are being traded here and quite the money is being spent in the taverns around town... Which he might or might not profit off of. But we don't talk about that, do we?

Wickam comes off as terrifying at first and he surely has a temper, but he can be quite lovely... if you're on his good side, of course. He also cares a lot about the people around him, mostly his crew. He easily notices if something is off, his emotional intelligence is surprisingly high. But when it's about the people who wronged him, he doesn't believe in mercy. While he won't do pointless hunts (unless he's in the mood), he won't spare a single soul if their paths ever cross again.

Background

𝔗here are countless rumours surrounding Wickam Crossgane. From the name to the tattoos, but none of them are as interesting as the one about his childhood where he single handedly killed the entire crew of a royal ship. Or so they say...

Wickam grew up in a poor family. His mother worked as an herbalist in a small town while his father had to turn to piracy to provide for the three of them. One time, the ship he worked on got caught by the royal guards, but he managed to slip away. Ran home to warn the other two that they need to leave as soon as they can; but it was already too late. Two of the officers followed him home, shooting him on sight as soon as they entered the room. His mother told them to take anything, just don't hurt them. Not much time passed before they shot her too anyway, deeming her "too annoying" as she begged for mercy. The young Wickam was too shocked to do anything besides watch as his life fell apart.

They ended up taking him as there weren't enough valuables to pay his father's "debt" back, forcing him to serve in the royal navy. Wickam spent his next years on the ship by the name of The Crown, usually doing maintenance work besides some occasional training after they noticed the potential in his unnatural strength. He hated every moment of it, not being able to forgive or process the fact that these people murdered his family in cold blood. So he swore on his life, that he'll take revenge for them and escape, no matter the cost.

One time, the ship stopped for restocking rations and to report to some other officers. While on land, Wickam spotted plants he recognized from his mother's teachings, ones that were commonly used to put patients to deep sleep. Without a second thought, he took a bunch back to the ship without anyone noticing. He waited for the right moment to use, so when he was on kitchen duty he put all of it into the meal. With the entire crew sedated, he went and finished off every single one of them with an elegant slit on the throat; leaving no one but him alive. Now stranded and alone, he had no idea where to go or what to do as the ship was too huge for him to navigate.

Not like he was capable of doing anything after the first shock of taking people's lives.

Wickam didn't know how much time had passed between that fateful day and the day he got found. The captain of the Silver Liriat was the first to board the vessel he never bothered to learn the name of. Said captain, Captain Swinford, was quite suspicious of the empty ship, his suspicion only increasing after the bloody young man appeared. Said young man promised they can take anything from the ship, hell, he'll even show them where the valuables are, with just one condition; take him too. Swinford was a bit surprised by him, but soon agreed to taking him with them, only if he works on the ship for it. He accepted this without any hesitation and soon the Silver Liriat was on its way again, with one new crew member; Wickam.

While on the Silver Liriat, he hesitated for a while about going back to the mainland or staying with the pirates, but ultimately his choice was the crew. The lifestyle fit him and despite the conditions, he enjoyed being out on the sea. And besides, after killing so many important officers, there was no way he'd be able to live a peaceful life on land. The years passed and he slowly gained the crew's respect, getting voted as quartermaster at one point by the other mates. He grew close with the captain, Swinford was like a father to him. But these good times didn't last long as the captain got heavily injured during one of their battles, passing away soon after. The new loss crushed Wickam once more, but tried his best to not let his grief show. It was a sad day for the entire crew of the Silver Liriat as many people looked up to Captain Swinford. But the position had to be filled, and to Wickam's surprise, he got voted as the next captain. And he was not here to disappoint.

They soon found a new quartermaster too; Dante Verion. Wickam had to help out in the beginning as he had years of experience with the role. As annoying as he found Dante at first, the two ended up with a brotherly bond. But Dante started to grow distant after seeing what Wickam kept doing to the navy officers. He voiced his distaste one time, starting quite a heated fight; a bottle shattered on Wickam's head, a chair broken on Dante's back and of course, some very tasteful insults. Out of anger, Dante swore to never come back and did what he did best: stole a ship. And this ship was none other than the Silver Liriat, only fueling Wickam's anger towards him. He swore to never forgive and told everyone that if they see the Silver Liriat near Crossgane, shoot it down without hesitation.

Wickam's been living his best life, murdering and plundering as much as he ever wished, making his name be feared by everyone. Despite the crew being rendered useless for a few weeks, they scored themselves a new vessel: The King's Fate (named by Wickam, of course), saying that they are what fate waits for the king - a brutal death by their hands. They've been roaming the seas with this ship ever since, even filling the position of quartermaster with someone who didn't back stab them (so far they're in the clear) They even got the hunted starchild on board as their first mate who seemingly only trusts him so far. He doesn't want to get attached, but he can't help but feel close to him. And a sudden haunting at Crossgane also made him confused when it comes to emotions.

The fear of losing someone important again is haunting him, but he can't always push everyone away, can he?

Saye is his first mate who's definitely not cut out for the sea. After being forced to help out the royal navy, he ended up on The King's Fate by complete accident; and by accident I mean Wickam destroying another navy ship with 0 remorse, finding the rumoured starchild and taking him with the crew. Besides, he seemed miserable and he knows that way too well. Wickam in general sees a lot of himself in Saye, especially after learning how they grew up very similarly. The two have a father-son kind of relationship; who knew you could get so attached to a stranger on a ship.

"You think of me as a father figure? That's sweet."

Once friends with benefits, then enemies, now back to being best friends. Amira is one of the few, if not the only person Wickam considers a true friend. They are very similar in temperament, so many of their interactions end in a verbal (and often physical fight, but don't worry; it's all in good fun. Sinclaire knows more about him than Wickam would like, but this is what happens when you get too drunk and too close. He loves Sinclaire dearly as a friend, despite what it may look like.

"Well, fuck you too, Crossgane."

His old quartermaster before their big argument (and the so-called Chair Incident). Wickam is awfully angry with Dante, he feels like he got backstabbed by someone he cared so much for and thought of as a younger brother. The fact that he also stole his ship on that fateful night does not help with the negative feelings towards Dante.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE SHIP IS GONE??"

Ada met Wickam when Swinford first took him in after the massacre he committed on The Crown. She used to be Swinford's right hand man and just in general was in a good position before Wickam came along. She was not happy about being somewhat replaced, but calmed down after seeing that Wickam is more than capable to be captain (plus her being quartermaster turned out to be better for her). But this doesn't change the fact that she knows what happened on The Crown. Ada doesn't dare to get him angry, because "who knows what he'd do". Despite all of this, they are on good terms and consider each other friends. And Wickam would never hurt a friend.

"I saw what this man is capable of and honestly? I'm a bit afraid of him."

Ferrus used to work on a simple merchant ship as a surgeon. Said ship was attacked by Wickam and his crew, and he got taken to be The King's Fate's surgeon quite fast. He originally hated it, but soon realized he was treated way better than he used to be on the merchant ship. He ended up staying with the crew, even if they give him psychic damage all the time with the reckless behaviour.

"Captain, if you die on us, I'll end you."

From a popular bard to a well respected navigator, Nils joined the ship quite early after he realized his current lifestyle is not profitable enough. Awfully serious and precise when it comes to his work, which Wickam appreciates. He also enjoys Nils' occasional songs on the King's Fate that he usually entertains others (but mainly himself) with when he has downtime.

"Next songs for you, Capn'!"
