Profile

name: Tano Juan Samai Mehgai

  • Tano: A name deprived from Chamorro origins, it means “land”. He took up this name after World War 2, to say the least, he wanted to start on a new clean slate or sheet and proceed with a new persona for his home. It was to say, an important moment in his life due to him changing himself for the better of not only his people but himself.
  • Juan: Spanish origin meaning, “God is Gracious”. Along with being another form of John, meaning aside, Tano was baptized with this name way back then. It’s a partial history of him and the island but pretty much once the island was taken over by the Spanish. The natives were made to be baptized and use their native name as a surname while being given a new name following religious backgrounds, mostly saint names were given.
  • Samai: Anther Chamorro name that he took in as it was his late mother figure's name before Spanish Colonization.
  • Mehgai: This was Tano’s first name given when he was found before the Spanish era. Now his surname being of Chamorro background and also meaning, “to have reason for”. He vaguely remembers why his people would give him such a name, but he finds the meaning to it later on his life. To say, he is passionate about the name knowing he was there on the island for a reason.

  • Has a dark tan with a golden undertone to his body. He also has sunspots all over his back and shoulders due to past farming work and being out in the sun majority of the time. You'll also notice that he has three scars on his face, one on his left cheek is a deep cut from wrestling with a Spanish soldier, the second one is also a deep cut near his right eye was done by a hostile argument with a whaler in Boston, and the third one is on the back of his neck and is a burn scar from a farming accident. Tano also has several scars on his back as well that he doesn't disclose with unless you're a close friend or relative of his. trivia:

  • Tano is someone who can bring joy not only by himself but by music. He is surprisingly skilled with some stringed instruments such as the acoustic guitar and ukulele. He's also good at playing a long single stringed instrument called the Belembaotuyan, this instrument is usually played at special occasions like weddings or festivals. Yet he manages to still practice playing the said instrument in his free time and brings it with at parties. The same goes for the guitar and ukulele.
  • Whenever Tano travels, he collects small bottles of sand from the said place. A strange habit when he travels, but he started this tradition when transitioning to American life. He really does it because of lack of sand on his island, considering most of the beaches on Guam has crushed up coral instead of sand. Others think it’s strange, but Tano says it is to help him remember a part of the place he went to.
