Story

Home Sweet Home

In a far off hilly, forested area, firbolg clan Hellström welcomed their newest member into the world, a droopy-eared baby boy who would prove to be an outlier from the rest of his clan. Ludvig never related much to the other clan member around his age, as they went out hunting and farming the land around them Ludvig would be busy tying sticks and rocks together and claiming it as his next new invention. If outsiders stepped within the perimeters of their land the clan had protocals to sit and hide till the strangers leave, watching as new mysterious faces crept through their forests without a thought on who might be watching them. Ludvig despreetly wanted to speak to these strangers, pick their brains, surely they came from the city. "Stay Ludvig." his mother would whisper. Any shiny metals or wire unknowing adventures would drop would excite him even more, a world of possibilities was out there. Only a forest stood in his way.

A Dream For More

It was a usual day within the clan, a good hunt had just finished and the elders began the preprations for yet another celebration or an upcoming birth. His mother sent him off to pick berries for the sweets her and a group of others were cooking up. Obeying his mother he grabbed a basket an was on his way. The forest was quiet, the sun shining pleasantly through the leaves. All was normal. As he was delicatley picking berries his gaze shifted below him to notice a slightly crumpled piece of paper underneath his foot. Curious, he snatched it up, peaked around to see if anyone else was nearby before turning the paper around and reading the words that filled the page. It was a flyer, but not just any old flyer, it was a promoting a science competition. Better yet, the prize was a mentorship from the most prolific scientist of the time, Dr. Remus Faust. Finally, his big break. He sprinted out of the forest, his basket of berries left tipped over beside a tree. A fresh future in his mind.

No Turning Back

Whispers from his peers followed him as he gripped the last of his belongings in his arms. Move out day. The carriage was waiting outside the forest perimeters for him. He kept his eyes down, as to not meet the disaproving gaze of his clan, he was going against everything they stood for, everything they believed in. His mother desperately grabbed at his clothing, begging and pleading for him not to go. He had made his decision, no amount of begging would change that. He gave his last goodbyes to his loved ones, hugging his mother firmly against his chest. "I will make this world a better place, I promise this to you mother." he whispered into her ear. With one last wave goodbye he threw all his belongings into the carriage and left the only home he's ever known. From lush, green forested land to the bustling magic infused city of tomorrow.

City-bound scientist

Now a student in the well-renound academy Dr. Faust taught within, he learned quickly from his mentor and proved to be a genius at his craft. He focused on medical science, how magic might be better used to help the sick instead of powerful it is in combat. He out-did the rest of the students in his class, so much so that he was given permission to further develop his new techinque which he called "soul-mending." Evil, lack of empathy, uncompassionate, if you're familar with these words describing the deplorable villians and criminals that populate this world then you know just bad of an infection they are to society. With soul-mending we are one step closer to crimialless future where we no longer have to worry about what our children will witness on the streets of the underground or what our friends might encounter while out on business. By using magic we can tap into the soul of any indivual and rewire it so the infection of evilness is drained from their body and instead left with a compasonate person who might help to contribute to society. A safer future for everyone. At least that was the goal.

A Failed Experiment

The metal goggles are tightened against his eyes as he slides on his gloves over lanky fingers. With one last sigh of anxiousness he turns to the face the student filled lecture hall. In front of his lay an unconscious burly human male strapped elabrately to a chair in case he awakes sooner than expected. Dr. Faust gives an encourging thumbs to the nervous filborg. This was the big day, after researching for ages he would finally put that reseach to use. The first offical soul-mending procedure. His patient was a crimial captured by city guards for petty theft and assult, the perfect subject. If this proved to work he would be one of the most well know scientists of today, the creator of some of the most influential medicine known to man. The pressure was pracitcally debilitating, but he would prove himself. He would make the world a better place. Student watched intently as he got to work, his fingers moving in each direction as magic sunk into the unconscious body. Bright blue light filled the dark room as the crimials soul appeared above him as his heart and vital viens. Assistants placed small tools into his hand, his eyes unmoving as he worked. All was going well, his tools worked as expected, the sleep spell was no wearing off any time soon, each step was being thouroughly followed. One. single. tear. The air around them no longer a soft blue hue but bright-blinding white. Then darkness. Silence. Ludvig's exasperated, heavy breathing. Piercing pain through his eye.

Banishment Day

Stood in front of the council he stayed silent as they read out his verdict. Everything was still fuzzy, he could'nt accept what he had done. He didn't want any of this to happen. None of it was meant to happen. Dr. Faust couldn't even look him in the eye as he told the man he had mentored for years that he was to be banished for the accidental death of several fellow students. He would not be permitted to to step within 500-feet of the academy. His license would be stripped and his research destroyed. He left the academy a broken man, pieces of the bright-eyed boy who first entered those halls.

Modern Day

Managing to steal away the majority of his research before his banishment he left the city, hopping from town to town as a healer for hire. Most adventuring parties were missing one after all, so money wasn't that big of an issue. Privately, he continued his research as he knew he could prove himself, gain a spot back in the academy. Those deaths would not be in vain. Hearing of the particiclarly evil indivual by the name of Strahd he jumped at the oppertunity to join their party. He would be the perfect test subject to finally prove soul-mending worked. Ludvig would do anything to prove it worked.
