Basics
You're never too old to learn.
Miles was born and raised in Alola, his family moved there from Sinnoh before he was born seeking a more comfortable and warmer climate but Miles always preferred the cold. He decided to strike out on his own and move to the Issho Region in hopes of new adventure and new pokemon. Despite having moved so far away he keeps frequent contact with his family and sends them souvenirs he finds and hopes they'll like

When he was a kid his parents didn't really have many pokemon so his experience with them was pretty basic and not deviating much out of necessity or convenience. His parents weren't particularly against having pokemon, they just worked too often to take adequate care of them and didn't want to bring them into a home that couldn't care for them properly. Despite this though, Miles always had an interest in them and raising them. This being amplified by an experience in his teens.
On a school trip when he was 17 he was on a hike with his class when a misstep sent him tumbling off the mountain. Thanks to some kind, wild pokemon he avoided serious injuries and was assisted back to his class. He's held that fond memory close to his heart and it motivated him, albeit a little late in life, to become a pokemon trainer and what better place than in the Issho region.
