Maria Hallett (マリア・ハレット, Maria Haretto), known as "Painkiller", is a former member of the Bellamy Pirates. Currently, she operates as an assassin nicknamed “Gunslinger” available for hire in the underworld. Her notable clients include the Ame Group, the Dagian Tars, and the Revolutionary Army.
Born as the eldest child and raised in the Hallett noble family, Maria ran away at age 15 to become a pirate. She left three years later after a huge fight with her captain and turned to the underworld for work. Maria initially appeared in the Dressrosa Arc as a spectator during the Block B match, then officially introduced as an ally.
Not long after the events of Dressrosa, Maria paid her regular visit to Ryo's craft shop back in Dyed Good Town. There, she unexpectedly met the now-retired Bellamy, who was apprenticing under the old man. Despite a rocky start, the two gradually repaired their relationship and Maria went inactive from her mercenary work. While awaiting the time to answer Toshiko’s call to arms, she is staying in the shop with Bellamy, Yoko and Ryo.
Maria had an original bounty of 9,000,000, which was later raised to 127,000,000 over the course of ten years.
She is the deuteragonist of the "Decade Recoil" spin-off.
Appearance

Maria is a tall woman with tan skin, dark brown hair and turquoise eyes. Her forehead is mostly covered by her fringe, with a notable feature being a curled up flick on the right side of her head. She often bundles parts of her hair to the back of her head and secure it in place with a claw clip. She always has her rifle in hand.
Maria is commonly seen in flowy skirts or dresses, as well as large earrings. She never wears necklaces except for a black leather strap with a rose-gold ring attached to it. With regards to makeup, she wears orange lipstick.
During the Dressrosa Arc, Maria donned a long maroon vest dress over a shorter beige dress. The dress has large black frills lining its gold sliders and smaller ones lining the base of the vest. The top slightly fades from maroon to black, while the skirt fades from maroon to pink. She also wore a pair of pearl-like dangling earrings and a brown pair of knee-high boots.
In the spin-off "Decade Recoil", Maria's hair is bundled lower and she mostly swaps between a variety of shirts beneath a set of overalls. She now wears a pair of drop earrings with two velvet hair ties around her right wrist. On her off days, she would revert back to her usual dressing style. She always wears flat or slightly elevated shoes.
Personality
When meeting new people, Maria is coy and flirtatious. However she does not hold any romantic interest when doing so, and doesn’t hesitate to clarify. She is very playful, mischievous and loves watching the reactions of others to her quips. Despite her initial impression, she is an easy-going, friendly and assertive person who enjoys socialising with others. She also has a little bit of a dramatic flair.
Maria possesses a strong desire to live by her own rules and be free from any form of expectations. That desire would eventually spur Maria to run away from home and become a pirate. By extension, she leads much of her life spontaneously which led to a persistent issue of her running off on her own, even while on important missions. An example is when she neglected her duties to shield Bellamy after his defeat, as well as delaying her return to Baltigo to oversee his recovery despite CP-0's movement in the kingdom.
Maria is quite sympathetic, even towards her enemies. She does not hold any grudge against the people she fights as she believes they are simply fulfilling their roles, just like she is. It does not mean Maria would hold back since they decided to put their lives on the line, but she holds a form of respect for their spirit.
She does not believe in unprovoked violence, hence why she was the only person who outrightly disapproved of her crew enabling Bellamy’s behaviour. However, Maria understands that it is a necessity in order to survive within the world of outlaws, and developed a vicious side to her during her years as a pirate. Though, she seems almost ashamed of it. These traits spurred Maria to show disgust towards the jeering and bloodlust she felt within the Colosseum, criticising the spectators while they cheered within earshot and outright calling them a bunch of cowards.
Throughout her childhood, Maria was described by her elders as cheeky, rebellious and wild; bluntly speaking her mind, disregarding authority, dodging responsibility and so on. She was mischievous and did not seem to mind causing trouble. She was also not easily fazed since she remained relatively calm when involved in fights. Maria also has a bit of a temper and becomes impatient easily.
As a result of her strict upbringing along with her bold personality, Maria struggled to mix in with other noble children of her age. Since she could sense the true intentions behind others, the fakeness she was required to put on made her incredibly uncomfortable. She is prone to loneliness and although emotionally driven, she has trouble communicating her feelings. Adding in pride and ego, Maria is generally avoidant of vulnerable conversations. She is much better at expressing herself through art; In a way, it is a language she speaks much more fluently.
Maria has a strong sense of curiosity and is easily intrigued. Coupled with her artistic eye, she spends a lot of time exploring whatever she finds fascinating and devotes a lot of time to her projects and interests. She is always enthusiastic to teach those who are willing to learn, but can become easily frustrated at people who give up quickly.

Her 🧡
- Maria's namesake comes from Goody "Maria" Hallett, known in legends as the lover of the 1700s pirate "Black Sam" Samuel Bellamy, whom he met shortly before the beginning of his voyage. Her meeting with Bellamy has some similarities to the story—both Maria and Goody were from wealthy families; Bellamy and Samuel had not yet made a name for themselves in the world of pirates. Unlike the legend, Maria chose to leave with Bellamy to escape her suffocatingly strict family.
- It was alluded by Bellamy in a conversation at the end of the Dressrosa Arc that he and Maria were more than friends during their time together a decade ago. More accurately, his silence when prompted was the confirmation.
- She is ambidextrous.
- Maria is the one who gave Bellamy his first scar: the one above his right eye.

Overview
Maria's Wanted Poster
In terms of strength when talking about One Piece characters, Maria is slightly weaker compared to the average human and less resistant to physical blows. Maria is aware of her body's fragility and worked hard to strengthen her physique, especially her stamina. She only has knowledge of street fighting, but is relatively defensive when unarmed. In these situations, Maria is willing to exploit any opening her opponent has.
Her escapades to Dyed Good Town as a teenager led to frequent clashes with outlaws, which helped shape her intense speed, reflexes and Haki that saved her on many occasions. Years of experience on the sea further developed her mastery with her Haki and sharpened her senses. This is also the reason why Maria relies on her intuition a lot. Despite being a combatant in the Dagian Tars, she mostly assists from long distances.

As the primary marksman of the Dagian Tars, Maria is extremely skilled when it comes to sniping. While she mainly uses a flintlock rifle, she is also familiar with numerous firearm types and is comfortable with using them interchangeably. Additionally, Maria is able to mann cannons on her own and has done so since her time as a pirate. She began to develop her sniping skills with the help of Rivers, a fellow crewmate and honed it on her own time.
During a fight, Maria does not shoot blindly; Instead she predicts the movement of her opponent, almost like she is mentally projecting an image of their direction, and lines her weapon up to them. This is shown when Kurn attempted to escape from town, Maria predicted his path and landed a clean shot on his leg in spite of his agility.
Her extremely sharp senses and Haki also aid her greatly in battle. She is sensitive to any slight change in movement and can quickly pinpoint her target long before any of her crew members do. Among all of the Stages, Maria’s intuition is the strongest out of them all and they firmly trust her judgement because of it.

Maria is a very skilled artist who is proficient in the visual arts and well-versed in many other art forms. She holds great dedication towards her hobbies and spends much of her down time doing them. Maria also keeps up to date with the arts scene and is a huge fan of Soul King Brook. Growing up, she spent a lot of time in Ryo's Dye Shop experimenting with different materials and mediums. She enjoys making crafts and customising items as gifts.
Her room is often littered with many different projects of varying levels of completion, and because of how unorganised she is, there is a running joke among the Stages remarking on the mess a "tornado" made whenever she walks out of her room. Maria always responds with, "Excuse you, this isn't a mess. It's 'organised chaos', get it right!".
Physical Abilities
Maria is born with a weak body and low resistance, hence she got injured (especially bruised) often throughout her childhood. She is well aware of her body’s weakness and worked hard to strengthen her physique. As a child, thanks to her intense reflexes, sensitivity and her Observation Haki, she was saved during many dangerous encounters. However, because Maria mainly relied on her dodging, it meant that she was very passive when engaged in fights.
Description
When Maria was a part of Bellamy’s crew, she spent a lot of time training together with him. She started to develop ways to disarm and incapacitate her opponents after she became more observant during their sessions. Although they routinely sparred, she remained average when it came to brute strength but trained her body to withstand the strain she experiences from fighting better.
Maria also has lesser stamina compared to the others in her crew. While she possessed incredible dexterity, she gets worn out especially from close combat and even with her experience, she remains on the defensive by imbuing her arms with Armament Haki and blocking while observing for weak spots. Exploiting openings to disarm and incapacitate her enemies is what Maria does when unarmed. But, she does get caught off-guard if her speed is matched or if her attempts are blocked.

Flintlock Rifle
Maria is capable of wielding different firearm types, but she always carries a flintlock rifle in either of her arms. It is her primary weapon as a long-range support. She sometimes uses it as a club to clobber her opponents with, but is prone to going overboard.
Analgesic Projectiles
In addition to regular bullets, Maria utilises bullets and needles coated in analgesics. In close combat or situations where she is surrounded, Maria flings her needles at her opponents to numb their senses, rendering them helpless and thus earning her epithet as “Painkiller”.
Haki
Observation Haki
Maria was naturally born with the ability to use Observation Haki. Ever since she was a child, she was well aware of this skill (although unaware of the term). She used it on multiple occasions when sneaking out of her home, and honed it to a great extent to avoid getting caught. Her familiarity with her Haki in her youth is most prominently shown during her first ever fight with the Bellamy Pirates. Even though she was outnumbered and ganged up on, she evaded their attacks with ease and not even Bellamy was able to land a blow on her.
She also demonstrated using it to gauge a person's strength and sense their emotions. An example being when she first met Bellamy, she noted that while he is strong, he is also overly confident in himself.
Description
As an adult, Maria has an expert mastery of the Haki. Given her role as a sniper, she utilises it frequently in long-ranged fights. In other situations, such as when she was a good distance away, she could sense the number of people approaching to attack Toshiko and the directions they were coming from. She was also able to find Bellamy on her own with the only piece of information being that he was in the royal palace.
According to Jade, Maria has the potential to fully unlock her foresight ability, but it is unknown if she ever did.
Armament Haki
Maria possesses a basic mastery of Armament Haki and mainly uses it to defend herself if she has been disarmed.

- Her epithet "Painkiller" was chosen only because the creator thought it sounded cool. The idea of the analgesic bullets being used was actually suggested by fellow artist Rorak.
- Maria is willing to fight dirty.
- The analgesics she uses were discovered during her mercenary contract with the Ame Group. Even after it ended, she continues to source them from the organisation.
Early Life
Childhood
Maria was born into the house of high-status nobles Fynn and Luetta Hallett on Mauve Island, followed by her younger brother Damien years later. Since young, Maria’s schedule was filled with private tuition and lacked any personal time. She only had the company of her personal servant, Eti, who she viewed as an older sister.

Intensive as her studies were, Maria fell short of her parents’ expectations, instead excelling in her artistic skills. Fynn and Luetta found it unacceptable and blamed her talent, choosing to remove her creative lessons. Maria begged her parents to reinstate them but they were unconvinced, eventually scrutinising her behaviour and Maria’s confidence took a plunge.
Blanc, Maryon and Ava Hallett came as triplets to the household and became the biggest competition for her parents’ approval. Maria was criticised even more and the triplets regularly disrespected Maria and Damien behind their parents’ backs, which almost escalated to physical violence if not for the restraint Damien put on his older sister.
Ryo the Craftsman
Unable to tolerate the growing stress, Maria began to ditch classes and sneak out of the kingdom to visit the rumoured Dyed Good Town: a place known for expert craftsmanship of dyed goods–particularly, flags–attracting numerous pirates to the area. Drawn in, Maria wandered around the marketplaces and observed craftsmen at work. To prevent her parents from noticing, she left bribes intended for her tutors with Eti.
Ryo the Craftsman returns
One day, she stumbled across a closed workshop and heard from other shopkeepers that the owner, Ryoken, had been away for a long time. She decided to make her way inside and discovered entire assortments of materials. There, a mesmerised Maria spent countless hours experimenting and reading, not even noticing that someone was coming in.
Maria came face-to-face with a furious old man. She nonchalantly greeted him and asked for his name, to which he responded by kicking her out. The next day, Maria returned and asked to enter. When he refused, she rudely called him a kill-joy. Though annoyed, he didn’t relent. Disappointed but also determined, Maria made numerous trips back until Ryo finally gave up and accepted her as his apprentice.
Meeting Bellamy
On her way to Ryo’s workshop, Maria noticed a group of teenagers terrorising the local stalls. A boy with blue hair demanded she give them her bag, to which she responded with an insult. The boy tried to grab her but she merely evaded, causing him to plunge face first into the dirt. The other teenagers (except one) rushed towards her too, yet failed to even hit once. She laughed and told them that she’s met so many people as cocky as the group, she was more than prepared to take on a couple of rookies.

Just as Maria was about to leave, she was confronted by a blonde boy; the same one that stood by the sidelines as the group attacked her. She assumed he was the leader, with the group declaring their “captain Bellamy” invincible. The moment he challenged her, she cackled. Bellamy asked why she laughed, to which she said, “You’re not very bright now, are you?”. Unsurprisingly, his attempt yielded the same results. In the end, she quickly escaped through the alleyways out of fear of facing Ryo’s anger for being late.
Some time passed, and Maria ran into Bellamy once more on her way home. She taunted him by asking if he was here for a rematch and though ticked off, he shook his head. The two walked together and started a conversation. Worried about people spotting them as she approached the kingdom walls, she briskly said goodbye to him and left, mentioning that she would come by again.
While his crew stayed in town, Bellamy would sometimes spot Maria on errand runs and join her. In turn, she enjoyed his company. Gradually, Maria told him about her noble status and opened up about her strong distaste for their lifestyle and values. At that, Bellamy asked if she would ever leave Mauve Island. She paused on the thought, admitting that she was uncertain because of her lack of strength. When they parted that day, she felt different as she started to consider the idea.
Exposed
Upon reaching home, Maria was faced by Damien in her room, accusing her of hiding something. Though she feigned innocence, he told her it wasn’t fair that she gets away with playing hooky and threatened to expose Eti if Maria keeps it up. She only scoffed, unconvinced, until she woke up to her parents’ fury the next day. Luetta dragged her to the living room and made her watch as they threw Eti out, accusing her of stealing their family jewellery in front of numerous passersby. Maria could not do anything as a frightened Eti was taken away in front of her.

Maria’s parents decided to assign a bodyguard to Maria, prompting her to make her escape that night. She quietly slipped out through her window and made a run for the city gates. Her body began to struggle, but she kept it up and made it past the walls. Surprisingly, she encountered Bellamy right outside. Before he could say anything, she grabbed his shoulders firmly and asked him to take her out to sea. Noticing the group of guards after her, he carried her over his shoulders and they got away with his Spring-Spring Fruit abilities.
Life as an Outlaw

Maria’s arrival to the crew generated a mostly-negative response, mostly due to the results of the crew’s fight against her. While Bellamy suggested that they get along, some such as Eddy and Muret took opportunities to make off-handed remarks about Maria’s weakness, which Maria immediately shot back with their lack of guts. In that environment, Maria saw striking similarities with her family situation, and took it as an opportunity to make sure she never gets affected by comparison again. She only befriended Rivers, who secretly taught her how to use firearms.

Cut Deep
During a raid on a marine ship, Maria stationed herself on a high point firing upon the fighting. As she reached to reload, she sensed a presence and was tackled off her position, onto the deck by a rookie marine. Surrounded, Maria got on the defensive to fend them off, still the large numbers overwhelmed her. She called for help but saw her crewmates spare barely a glance her way. The rage fuelled her Haki’s strength as she grabbed the marines’ swords with her bare hands and crushed them, pummelling them till they backed off out of fear.
Later, Maria was in an incredibly foul mood while the crew was cheering for their victory. Bellamy came over to speak to her, leading her to bring up the crew ditching her when she needed help. They argued against her, which left Bellamy sceptical as Maria grew angrier.
“My hands are so important to me, What makes you think I’d injure them to this extent just to make the captain side with me?! Forget it! I don’t need your stupid help anymore, I don’t wanna owe you shit!”

A few months later, the crew were on board partying late into the night after securing a huge hoard of treasure. Maria did not join them in their activities, favouring eating alone at the back of the ship and stargazing against the railing. She was soon approached by a slightly tipsy Bellamy, asking for where she was. She told him that she didn’t feel right around the crew, that she wasn’t one of them. To that, he responded saying he wants her company and surprised her with an unexpected gesture of affection. He then heard the call of the other members and left her stunned with a big smile. Alone again, Maria held her hands as she sat with her conflicting feelings.
Priorities
On an unnamed island, the Bellamy Pirates were partying in the bar until they were interrupted by “Fleetfoot” Lerond, the captain of the Rooth Pirates. He challenged Bellamy to a brawl, citing his reason being that the crew targeted one of their sister fleets. Sensing Bellamy’s eagerness, Maria quietly urged him to ignore Lerond only for the man to taunt, asking if they were a group of cowards. The rest of the crew reacted in protest, cheering for their captain as he got up.
In the midst of their battle, Maria was off at the sidelines watching when she was suddenly abducted. After Bellamy claimed victory over Lerond, the rest of the crew took the liberty to assault the remaining Rooth Pirates and rob their ship. It was then that Bellamy noticed Maria missing and asked where she was. The crew grew nervous at his question and after prodding, Rivers anxiously confessed that she was abducted. Bellamy was livid, but moved quickly to find her.
At an abandoned warehouse, a bound Maria listened as her abductors revealed their intentions: the Rooth Pirates were hired by her family with the intention of assassinating her, yet the crew were in favour of selling her off to bounty hunters; According to them, her family’s payments were less than satisfactory. When Maria lamented about their roundabout methods, they commented that they needed a distraction; and both her and Bellamy’s bounties will set them ready for the rest of the Grand Line.
“It’s sad, isn’t it? Your crewmates didn’t want to help you, your family wants you dead, your captain cares more about fighting ours than looking out for you… You have no one, so just quietly come with us, yeah?”
Before the Rooth Pirates could haul her off, Bellamy broke into the warehouse and proceeded to attack Maria’s kidnappers. With them distracted, she took the opportunity to free herself with a piece of scrap metal and held Bellamy back, whose fist was inches away from their enemy’s unconscious face. He was hellbent on beating them to death, but she tugged on saying that he’s done too much.
Back at the New Witch’s Tongue, Maria was brought into the infirmary by Bellamy. With Muret already there, she timidly asked if he would like her to treat Maria. He ignored her offer, threatening her and the rest of the crew with heavier punishment. The two were left alone for Bellamy to treat her, but Maria shoved his hands away. She expressed her disappointment, resulting in an argument.

“Why must you always prove yourself when you already know your damn strength? Is it for the crew? What about my concerns for you?”
“I don’t need you to care about me, I’m strong enough! I’m more worried that I have to watch you!”
“I never told you to do that! What do you take me for, weak?!”
“Yes!”
At that, Maria’s anger reached a tipping point. She grabbed Bellamy’s head and slammed it square into a table, shattering at the impact. The crew, who had been watching from the door, rushed to their captain’s side. Sarquiss stood between the two and maintained eye contact with Maria, urging her to stand down. She let out a shriek of frustration, and that night, without a goodbye to Bellamy, she left the crew for good.
Underworld Involvement
Now alone and wandering, Maria turned to the underworld and began working as a mercenary and an assassin. In one instance, she requested a powerful client to wipe her history as a pirate in exchange for her services, which was delivered. She also worked for prominent underworld figures, such as Jacqueline Ouroboros and Chitose Ame, the figureheads of the Ame Group.

At some point during Maria’s travels, she discovered an orphan hiding in her supply crate. The orphan begged Maria for mercy, explaining that she was hiding from a group of thugs who abducted her. Maria calmed her down with an origami butterfly, eventually learning that her name was Yoko. She followed Maria wherever she went, even during client meetings much to her dismay. When Maria would suggest bringing Yoko back to her home island, she would cling and cry about Maria abandoning her. For a long time, Maria had to keep Yoko close to her due to the dangerous nature of her job. While thinking of ways to convince her, Maria noticed Yoko’s interest whenever she drew, and came up with the idea of bringing her back home, to Ryo in the North Blue.
Task Failed... Successfully?
While sailing, Maria and Yoko stumbled across a group finishing up a battle with the local gangs. She noticed the flag and realised that it was the infamous Dagian Tars, slave liberators who have been the talk of the local papers as of late. Maria realised, in the midst of all that chaos, she would be able to sneak Yoko on and let the Dagian Tars bring her home.
Her attempt immediately failed with Acrimo Jet discovering her from Yoko's cries. He was about to engage in combat until the captain, Toshiko, intervened and agreed to let Yoko on board. Her presence and birds soothed the child and made her laugh, allowing Maria to loosen up and entrust Yoko to her. She gave Toshiko her contact information, offering her help whenever Toshiko would need it. She then warned the teen that if Yoko were to be harmed, Maria would personally come for her head, which intimidated her. As Maria turned to leave, she looked back and smiled.

Meeting the merchant
Maria was shown during the meeting Sparrow by Toshiko. She easily agreed to her taking command, captivated by her charm yet also uneasy when the merchant smiled in response. She noticed the increase in danger and commented on that when speaking to Toshiko.
When the captain blew up at Sparrow for toying with their lives, Maria was seen rushing a hysterical Sera into the infirmary with Edra Jade. She supported Toshiko’s decision to consult Sparrow once more, telling her that she’s seen people who take lives for their own benefit, but if Toshiko wants war, she will have to make hard choices like Sparrow did.
As they all said goodbye to the merchant at the end, Maria left shortly after to start her next contract.

Sarquiss
Maria often butt heads with Sarquiss during her time with the Bellamy Pirates. She viewed Sarquiss as an older, and much more annoying version of her rowdy siblings and being older than him by a year, Maria barely took him seriously. She was willing to go head-to-head with him whenever he got on her nerves and their fights would always end with Bellamy telling them to knock it off.
While Maria looked down on Sarquiss’s cowardice whenever she retaliated, she ultimately did have a certain degree of care for him. However because it felt weird for her to maintain a friendly relationship with him, she kept up their feuding. A mocking nickname she had for him was "'Dull Knife' Sarquiss" and she insulted his weapon on a regular basis.
Sarquiss, like his other crewmates, was intimidated by Maria's straightforward and unhesitating personality. Similar to Maria, Sarquiss shared the same aggressive and petty relationship with her, but he was afraid to cross a certain line because of her closeness with his captain and her willingness to fight back. At first, he thought that Maria was hiding behind Bellamy's authority over them, but after fighting with her so much over the course of three years, he realised that she did not rely on Bellamy's protection, but rather was just doing whatever she wanted.
Sarquiss ended up developing a form of respect for Maria (although he never spoke about nor admitted it directly). He did not draw his weapon when she assaulted Bellamy, and only stood in shock. He later reacted with discomfort at her decision to leave the crew but brushed it off quickly in favour of his captain.

Iris Chronis
Iris and Maria met sometime during the timeskip on the Sabaody Archipelago. The two bumped into each other while shopping and Maria struck a conversation in an attempt to loosen the tension as she saw how awkward Iris was, but then realised she was out buying art supplies, just like her. The two chatted as they walked and spent the day browsing the market together. Eventually, Maria asked her, "What's the crown princess of Athana doing away from her kingdom?", to which Iris responded with a shrug saying that "Princess life is overrated". They shared stories of how they snuck out from home and eventually how they ran away. While Maria doesn't tell her that she ran away with a pirate, she accidentally let it slip after saying "You too?" when Iris talked about leaving with the Heart Pirates and quickly left before she could question further.
After that, they kept in contact regularly, sending letters and gifts. Maria loves Iris like a little sister and dotes on her immensely.
Basileia Holly
During her time as a Stage, Maria's division was mainly stationed in the New World. She eventually stopped on Soran Island for resupplying and went to visit the local bar. There, she befriended the bartender Basileia Holly and began to share stories of her adventures. When Maria eventually had to leave, she left her contact with Holly telling her that she would come back and asked her to make reservations for her when she does. The two catch up occasionally over the Den Den Mushi and Maria makes frequent trips back to Holly's bar.
As Maria visited her more, she and Holly became close friends and Holly eventually opened up to her, mentioning how she repressed her emotions for the sake of her customers. Holly's vulnerability was what made Maria second-guess her handling of her negative emotions, and she ended up telling Holly about her history as a pirate. Maria trusts Holly and cares about her enough to return more often after the events of Marineford to give Holly a brief sense of normalcy amidst the chaos that was happening.
Maria also brought Bellamy with her to visit Holly during their retirement. While Holly joins in when Maria starts teasing him, she also intervenes when Maria is being unnecessarily petty towards him especially in public, and is the one who pushed her to start apologising properly. Maria is very grateful for her friendship with Holly and considers her to be one of her closest friends. They also do artistic activities together whenever they meet up.
