Synopsis
When Sam takes a job at a local summer camp, he's not expecting much. However, he soon finds out that one tiny white lie on his application has landed him in more trouble than he anticipated, and that the camp itself is hiding secrets that the students are eager to uncover.
Personality
Stoic and aloof, Sam's red-eyed scowl and large frame make him rather intimidating, and he doesn't mind it at all. He's a bit snarky and rude at first, but once he grows to trust someone, he's actually quite the softie.

In his free time, he enjoys gardening, hiking, weightlifting, and music. He's trained in singing and several instruments, and he listens to mostly pop and rock.
Appearance
Size: He is 6'3"/191cm in height and weighs about 250lb/113kg in his base form. In his ethereal form, he's about 8'/2.4m at the shoulder and 22'/6.7m from snout to tailtip.
Skin: Warm olive tan, covered in freckles
Hair: Long, fluffy, brown-black curly hair that falls to about his waist, with shorter sections that frame his face. He usually wears it tied back in a loose ponytail.
Eyes: Sharp, upturned monolid eyes with slit pupils and bright red rises. His pupils expand and irises glow in low light.
Build: Large, muscled frame with broad shoulders and a solid core.
Face: Wide square jaw and soft profile with a fairly average triangular nose.
Details: He has a mouth full of sharp teeth. His long tail is dark in color and has a heteroceral fin shape like a shark's. The upper lobe of his tail has two piercings.
Voice: A strikingly deep, low voice that doesn't often go above a mumble. His singing voice is warm and clear and enchanting to listen to; it has a carrying quality.
Mannerisms: He tends to keep off to the side and crosses his arms or puts his hands in his pockets. He tends to avoid eye contact with others, preferring to keep an eye on his surroundings. It takes the right crowd for him to be more open and less reserved with his body language.
Style: Typically alternative or grunge, with favored colors being blacks and reds, and usual items being things like his favorite leather jacket, band tees, hoodies, jeans, boots, sneakers, belts, and anything ripped or distressed, whether on purpose or from wear and tear, and sometimes repaired or patched. He can also be found wearing outdoorsy clothes for hiking.

Reserved
Sam is a loner. He doesn't mind being by himself for days at a time. While some of it is genuine preference, though, Sam is also known to push people away at times. He's actually rather shy.
Sarcastic
He has a dry, sarcastic sense of humor, and he quips and snarks habitually. He's known to be a bit rude and vulgar at times, too. Cracking jokes is his way of dealing with life's misfortunes.
Irritable
In truth, it's more that Sam's sensitive and easily overwhelmed, but it most often manifests as aggression. He's easily frustrated with people. He doesn't usually intend to hurt anyone, but it's not unknown for him to lash out unexpectedly.

Sam is a bit skittish and high-strung. He's very suspicious and wary of other people, and crowds make him visibly nervous. He's quite self-conscious as well, and it's easy to fluster him. He has pretty deep-rooted trust issues that make it difficult for him to befriend others.
Caring
Despite appearances, he's a gentle person deep down. This is most obvious in how he treats plants and animals, but very close friends and family know how sweet and nurturing Sam truly is when given the space to be himself. He's a surprisingly good listener.

Night Vision: Because of their cathemeral habits, most pyries have decent low-light vision; it's best under the light of the moon, not as much in pitch darkness.
Extrasensory Perception: All pyries have the ability to sense the auras of living things and other magical energies in their environment with a much higher level of discernment than other species. They can also "smell" and "taste" magic. Sam has particularly strong ESP and can trace the disturbances caused by others' auras very accurately.
Poison Perception: Sam can sense the toxic properties of magical ingredients and other things. He's adept at foraging.
Soul Siphon: Pyries must consume the souls and magical energy of other beings to survive. Although taking their mana is harmless (aside from the slight pinch of their fangs), eating the soul will kill the victim.
Ethereal Form: Pyries have the ability to shift between a base form, which is their default and more "human" look, and their ethereal form, which is an almost ghostly manifestation of their aura that takes on a glowing, translucent, and often beastlike appearance. His ethereal form is a large, four-legged ungulate with cloven hooves, a pointed, sharklike snout complete with teeth, and a long finned tail. He has a flamelike mane.

Childhood
Sam was born in 1995 in Rukari Kotan, a rural village within indigenous territory situated along Iwa Taskor, a frigid northern mountain in the kingdom of Otokkiya. He had a single father but a very large extended family and many friendly neighbors that all played a part in his raising. He was a quiet, shy child, but he was independent, and he often wandered off and found trouble to get himself into.
Sam spent his childhood bouncing between the village and wherever his father, Alan, traveled for work as a teacher and anthropologist. As soon as he could hold an instrument, Sam was taught the songs, stories, and epics of his ancestors. It wasn't exactly a passion of his so much as it was just what was expected of him, but he grew to have quite the knack for singing and storytelling.
Adolescence
Sam was to spend the summer overseas with Alan's old friend, Beck Tyvelt, an affluent inventor, in West Asuan. But weeks turned into months, and months into years; Alan had disappeared, and no one could get a hold of him. With his father gone, Sam has since been working to save up and move out of Beck's.
Trivia
Parthenogenesis is rare but possible in pyries. Sam is a half-clone of his father.

Sam has a hereditary disease called hypoceraplasia; he was born without the typical pyries' horns as a result. Among other health abnormalities, he often has migraines and vertigo.

Sihlaon
A friendship that quickly snowballed into something else entirely, Sam and Sihlaon have a strong romantic and platonic bond. They're very doting on each other. Although their social needs are quite opposite, they've figured out a partnership that fulfills them both.
Cats
His three cats are named Ira, a gray and white cat, Dickles, a silvery black cat, and Bongman, a tortoiseshell. He adores his cats like nothing else, and they are clearly just as attached to him.
Maerin
Sam and Maerin are a natural fit as friends – both rather quiet, shy, and gentle. They both share an interest in old music, and they like to watch movies and cook together.
Vivian
Although they seem quite different, it may be that opposites attract in their case. They both like spending time outdoors and can often be found hiking, picnicking, or just hanging out.
Dee
Sam and Dee at first only had a mutual need to protect each other's identities. Past that, though, Dee found Sam fun to tease, and eventually, they developed a friendship, especially as Maerin and Vivian are their mutual friends.
