Before the New Professor

Iseult Beltz-Balleroy was the somewhat lonely child of a traveling Brigidan hunter and a withdrawn Adrestian rancher, growing up in a remote and forested village beyond the Barony of Ochs in the Adrestian Empire. Her lifelong love and respect for large beasts began with the cattle her father raised, and she’d always be eager to help him with the towering animals as her mother was often wandering the lands, hunting for game and such to bring home some additional gold and trade.

The small family were well-off enough one generous spring to trade some whole cow’s hides with a traveling merchant for a thick, leather-bound bestiary and a similarly thick journal as gifts for Iseult, and she’d learn to read and write a great deal with those alone. When she was old enough to venture outside the village, the young girl would take the two books with her whilst occasionally tagging along with her mother on her travels for her own ‘field work’ in observing many creatures in the wild. However, one hair-raising evening in which she bore witness with her own eyes to a live demonic beast would lead her down a path of research away from the typical animal, for she was left with a burning question... “Are these beasts really as mindless as mama and papa say?”

The rough yet extensive research that began to gradually fill Iseult’s journal (not just on demonic beasts, but a handful of undiscovered species of other creatures within Fódlan, as well) would catch the attention of someone working at the Officer’s Academy by chance as she and her mother were passing by beside the Garreg Mach Monastery. Thoroughly impressed by the depth of work of but a young girl along with her skill with a bow passed down from her mother, word was put in for her to possibly attend the academy...
