A character who was close to their grandparent, who lived with/near their family and was not well liked for their passion for magpie-hoarding knowledge, valuables, and secrets. This elder figure was someone people sometimes turned to in times of need, but usually if they needed their magic done they would go to like... a cleric. A wizard. Someone with, y'know, papers, who wouldn't just burn some herbs and pass a crystal over you and claim your nightmares had ended. But those who had a secret to hide, something they'd be willing to trade, or a particular curiosity... There were enough tales of it working to keep this grandparent in an unsteady, unstable stream of income. This grandparent either died or lost their memory to dementia, and a younger grandchild picked up the practice on nothing but curiosity, faith, and the memory of how their grandparent used to teach them rhymes, rituals and riddles 

I'VE MADE IT BETTER. THIS TIME IT'S A LONG LIVED RACE. LIKE A FUCKIN ELF. and all the sessions with the grandparent and their off brand magic were a decent amount of time ago. time that has been spent honing other skills, hopping between jobs, idk, more on that later, just general all over the place knowledge but never settling down. THEN grandparent dies and they only belatedly figure out that the business and sundry was all left to them, and they're like "........... okay fuck it" and then try adventuring
