chapter one // The gentle sound of Cassiona’s beating wings dissipated, as the demon took a deep breath and rested along the rooftop. // The sky looks alright from up here, she commented, her hands letting go of the baritone ukulele she brought with her as the instrument promptly levitated onto her lap to rest there. Cassiona shuffled backwards off the edge of the roof so as not to slip and fall, and picked up the ukulele once more. // ‘Around the sun and around again, you seem to look right through me,’ she began to sing. // Carefully plucking the strings of the ukulele, Cassie’s voice naturally reverberated against the buildings’ walls on her solemn street. / It seemed effortless in the eyes of an outsider; this sort of music was Cassie’s release, and it came through in her voice that she found the act comforting. This song was familiar in her mind, but yet muscle memory wasn’t quite there. // ‘Another year being your best friend, feels like you always knew me,’ // ‘But I’m so proud to call you mine, Feels like I know you from ano- DAMMIT!’ // As the melancholy air that followed Cassie as she sang suddenly disappeared, she quickly recovered from the mistake she made and chuckled at her own misfortune. // ‘-know you from another life.’ she resumed, softly humming along to her playing for the remainder of the verse. // Right as she was preparing for the chorus, the demon noticed a soft tickle on one of her wings, responding near immediately only to discover the source; a feather, illuminated by a subtle, ethereal glow. // Of course, she immediately knew where it came from. // Hurriedly glancing up, down and off to her sides, she began looking out for a certain being that she assumed was the source of the feather. // “Neph! I know you’re there– you can’t pretend you weren’t watching me play,” her deep voice called out, trying to project it so her uninvited audience could hear. A distant voice could now be heard from above; finally, Cassie heard a quiet, playful yet recognisable giggle coming from that direction. // As the noise drew slightly closer, a rather out-of-place looking angel drifted down to Cassie’s level, levitating at a consistent height right off the edge of the rooftop. // “Eh? You don’t let me have fun, Cass. Your voice is just so pretty, y’know-?” As Nephele taunted Cassiona, the demon’s wings flapped in an expression of her flusteredness, which she herself was unaware of but Nephele was definitely picking up on. // “You could at least let me know you’re here,” Cassie picked up the feather that had drifted to her side previously, holding it out against the angel’s wings to prove that it fit right in. “before you start leaving evidence.” // “You can keep going,” Nephele added, blatantly dodging Cassie’s response. // “You interrupted me! I can’t keep going, I’m not in the right headspace to sing anymore,” Cassie complained, echoed by a sigh coming from Nephele. // “The sunset’s romantic.” Nephele commented. // “I know you’re listening to me, stop changing the subject–” As Cassie kept responding, Nephele really had no intent of paying attention, and was rather enjoying the evening by gazing into the demon’s eyes, shrugging at her comebacks and grinning smugly to her face. // Eventually, Cassie caught on. // “You want to go on a walk with me because it’s romantic.” Cassie sighed, slipping her ukulele into its case and slinging it over her shoulder. // “You’re close!” she laughed, effortlessly taking Cassie’s hand and holding her in her arms as if she were as light as the angel’s own feather. // “I knew you’d do something sappy like this.” // “And I knew you’d love it!”
