Backstory:

Within Kalos, there was a young Spritzee girl that was really quiet, and didn't talk to many people. She often stayed quiet around other children, seemingly staring at them. She seemed only close to her parents, as well as her grandparents on her mother's side. She would take frequent trips to the latter who lived in the forest, seemingly to learn what other kids guessed would be witchcraft. Soon she would be made fun of for being being the "Witchling". One day, during her teenage years, some bullying went too far, and she was chased into the forest. They would be gone for a while: the bullies, found at least day after without memory of what they had done since the chase, and Runa, who would emerge far later than any of them. The latter came out looking strange, as if she had taken on the appearance of a ghost. Since then, she is either feared for potentially being able to curse others, or admired from afar from the mysterious beauty to those who don't know her.

At least, that's the version of the story you hear from rumors rather than Runa herself, ones that left out crucial details. In truth, she was simply an extremely socially awkward girl who had difficulty talking to others, not helped by the rumors propagated around her. She had a remarkable interest and gift in chemistry and medicine, which is why she often visited her grandparents. The forest, while providing ample ingredients in her learning, was also filled with ghosts, which did make things awkward, since she was afraid of them. At some point during her teenage years, she was bullied pretty heavily by a group of bullies that propogated rumors of her being a witch. She would run off in search of safety in the forest, with her bullies in pursuit. It was here that she isn't quite sure what happened next. She would find herself in the presence of the ghosts again, and they would somehow save here. From here, she would remember falling through the floor of an old ruin she once visited. When she came to again, she would find it had been several days, and she had become fused with Misdreavus somehow. After this incident and feelng unwelcome in general, her family would move to Shinjo, hoping that a new environment would help her deal with her problems

Here, she became something of a class beauty in her final high school days, often mistaken as an aloof beauty in the eyes of many. However, she simply had become even more shy in her new environment, to a point she wasn't quite sure how to talk to others when it wasn't related to chemistry. She would eventually graduate, moving onto college at Moonflower. Here, her parents would hope someone would be able to break through her extreme social awkwardness.
