APPEARANCE DESCRIPTION

#tw for injuries and blood

briar hugo is a seventeen year old ghost boy, who can manipulate their transparency to be a completely human-like manifestation, or thin enough to walk right through your walls. they prefer to pass as one of the living. they have no reflection in mirrors.

briar has ashy silver hair and almost starc white pale skin, their hair pretty short, straight and layered, with a long fringe that sweeps to one side. they have a thin fragile body, their bones are brittle and have been broken many times, and they bruise very easily. since death, when briar is imitating a human vessel and gets wounded, their blood comes out an almost black color, and dries practically immidiately because wounds are impossible for them to keep. they often spit this up as well. they are only five feet tall, standing flat, but it does not seem that way for they hovers about half a foot off of the ground. the teen has braces in their mouth, which were on before they died, and can not be removed from their body now. brair's fingernails are always dirty, soil caked under them from taking care of their plants. they love 'girl's' clothing, and are pretty comfortable and in touch with their feminine traits.

their sense of fashion is very boyish and childish, they loves stripes, overalls, and shorts. they also likes high socks or stockings, and wears mostly grays, whites, and off pinks or peach. the ghost wears huge round framed glasses when they are reading. briar's posture and body behaviour makes them look pretty bummed out, shoulders always slouched a little bit, hands dragging at their sides.

PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION

the ghost boy is very sensitive and emotional, they will cry very easily, for any reason, really. they cry when confronted, when noticed, when their plants die, and when they are happy. they are usually in a pretty neuteral mood, and doesn't tend to speak up around others much, just mumble or choose one person to talk with privately. many assume that they are nonverbal, but it is not the case. briar talks lots, actually! -just only to their plants, they read stories to them and like to tell them about their day too. they can sing gorgeously too, but again, only their little potted green friends get to hear their voice. they also speaks to animals, even if the wildlife don't reply or understand, they finds they get along with foxes and rabbits more than other beings.

briar adores and is infatuated with the sole idea of life alone. they didn't appreciate it as much when they were livingthemselves because of the quality of their past life, but death had them realizing how beautiful living things are. this is the depth behind their love for plants and animals, because they are so full of life, and they love to study and admire that. briar loves their living friends, although if they were offered a chance to become completely alive again, they aren't sure if they would chose it.

although they do not need to eat anymore, briar adores the taste of fruits such as berries and melons, and they like plain slices of bread too. they eat for enjoyment reasons, not health. they are a vegetarian, although when alive, was forced to eat meat by their parents. now they only drink milk that edith gives them from her cow because they know the animal isn't being harmed, and avoid all other animal products.

they have lots of sensory issues, mostly focused around loud sounds or brightness. hates sirens and flickering light.

HISTORY

#tw neglect, abuse, alcoholism, death

briar's parents weren't the greatest people, two people who just happened to have a child together. their father would get very drunk and very aggressive, hitting and kicking the boy when he was intoxicated. their mother left very often, packing her bags and breaking plates and picture frames in the midst of her breakdowns. she had many affairs during their marriage. briar was pretty terrified of the two of them. they were never prioritied like children should be, and for three school years straight, they didn't even have a backpack. but their mother had pearls, and their father had whiskey. briar loved their grandmother rose very much, on their mother's side. she was a kind woman who taught them how to sing, and always loved them no matter what. briar was never misgendered by the lady, and she always made sure they had something to eat and shoes to wear. briar's grandmother paid for their braces, which were pretty costly, but did minimize some of the bullying the teen faced at school. they often visit rose at her nursing home, although she can't see them there when they go, they always leave her a gift or make sure her hanging plants are all watered. she thinks she has a guardian angel, but it's just her grandson.

briar's cause of death was due to a horrible house fire when they were only fourteen. their parents made it out of the home on that night, while they couldn't find a way out due to a collapsed base board in front of their door. briar's bedroom was in the basement, with one small window that was covered by the thick snow outside. briar's body wasn't able to be recovered in one piece for a funeral due to the flames, so they were cremated in a little box. their mother dumped out the box and pawned it a year ago. this is why they are terrified of candlelight and flames, even if they couldn't kill them anymore than they already have. the teenager believes their father started the fire in an attempt to kill his wife and son, the man had been on his worst streak of alcoholism and violence around that time, shouting and beating the boy more than often, threatening to jump out of the window, and waving around knives. he was in hysterics.

briar awoke in the shambles of their old home, their body covered in ash and rubble, the only things standing around them being a few charred baseboards and smashed ceramic tiles. they were very disoriented, and confused to find that they could look right through the skin of their hands and see the dirty ground at their feet. briar had heard many ghost stories from boys at school, and this was all they could result to out of the situation. they remembered what it felt like to die, the slow closing of their eyes, the scorching heat of the fire, the last few shouts for help- they were dead. they knew they were dead, and they were now a ghost. it didn't affect briar very much, they hadn't had huge worth in life before the incident, the only thing about this upsetting them was that they had left their grandmother behind, and all of the books in their room had been burned.

WHERE THEY ARE NOW

it wasn't until after their death that the teenage ghost devepoled their love for plants and insects. before that they hadn't cared very much for either. they wouldn't say that they didn't like them, but they weren't very important to briar. when they began to roam the woods, they began to appreciate the things around them much more than they had before. everything seems as if it is breathing, and they are not. they love it, it makes them feel alive.

briar has made a home for themself out of an old abandoned house in the forest of eae, not too far east of edith's huts. the house was ransacked and stripped down to basically just the drywall before they moved in there, the only things left were old dusty curtains and a big antique, chipped porcelain bathtub. briar likes to lay in there and pretend to sleep, for the ghost is incapable of actually resting. there were also some smashed pottery bits around the ground, which the teen spent weeks making mud to glue them back together with for their plants to be potted in. they detest light, candles, electric or natural. the silver haired boy only tollerates the light for their plants, keeping the curtains in their home pulled so they get their sun. the only luminance in their room at night is a jar of glow bugs they use to help them read their books.

they love to tend to their little green friends, the massive collection of bottles and jars and pots that the plants grow in. they cover their window ledges, shelves, and essentially most of their floor too. briar prefers the company of their ferns and herbs over most other creatures, for they are quiet and calm, much like the young ghost.

not long after they had settled into their home, they met edith, a friendly witch local. she was very nice to the ghost, letting them play with theo, edith's strange monster boy of a lover. edith repaired briar's reading glasses the day that they had met. edith had taken notice to how briar liked to tend to plants, and the two made a deal. briar would grow certain ingrediants for the witch, and she would give them things in return. she had at first offered them money, but what use is that to a ghost? the first trade was a large potted aloe plant, traded for a glass bottle of milk and a new set of black curtains she made for their room. they have been doing this business for two years now, and briar treasures all of the things that edith gives them.

OTHER NOTES

♡  briar once took care of a baby bird with a broken wing for a couple of months. they were very sad when they let them free again, but felt like they had made a big positive impact in somebody's life and it made them the happiest they had been in a long time.

♡ they are very nervous about sexual contact and have never experienced anything past kissing with their clothes on.

briar thinks that they would like to try writing a book about themselves one day. they think about it often.

♡ they first figured out how to manipulate their transparency when they were in the woods and they wanted to stroke the fur of a deer they had come across. they don't know exactly how to explain what they do to become a more human figure, they just think very hard about touch, feel, and form and it just...sort of happens.

♡ edith tailors some of their clothes, while others they have either found or stolen. briar doesn't think of it as stealing though, because he always leaves nice notes on the cashier's desk or a small token of appreciation, usually a gem or rock.

♡ they have quite a few insect terrariums in their room, one of the biggest ones being an old television with the inside hollowed out and filled with dirt. it's filled with pillar beetles and compost.

♡ briar loves edith like a sister and isn't quite sure what he would do without the lady.

♡ briar's grandmother used to call them her little 'bry-bum.' they still think this is adorable.

the abandoned house has a pond in the backyard. briar loves to sit outside there and feed the fish crumbs of their bread.

♡ briar feels a connection with animals so strongly that they cannot describe the love they have for the creatures to anybody without beginning to cry.

♡ every insect in briar's home has a name, and yes, they can identify them all with ease despite having so many.

some of briar's favorite story books include James and The Giant Peach, Hatchet, The Giver, and Little Boy Lost.

♡ they also own a very large collection of National Geographic magazines, because they love reading about happy people living good lives, and they enjoy looking at the pictures.

♡ at the end of each day, briar likes to list positive things that they had seen or done that day to their plants, it makes them feel more fufilled.

♡ they like the company of theo because the monster doesn't speak much, like themselves, and they don't have to make socialization efforts with him. they usually play hide and seek together in the woods. briar always wins because theo doesn't have spirit sense so the ghost just makes themselves invisible and sits somewhere. theos always begs for a rematch only to be tricked once again.

♡ they were once invited to edith's huts to meet her cow. they were so excited that day that they told all of their plants about the entire thing.

♡ they are a small baby that is too precious for this world and is to be protected at all costs.
