Appearance

A small tortoiseshell-and-white cat with a distinctive ginger and black striped tail, and a black patch over his left eye and ear. He has a tuft of golden-brown fur on his head and a gold patch on his chest in the shape of a star, which has three scars across it. He also has a nicked right ear. His eyes are light yellowish-brown.
Personality
Loyal • Calm • Indecisive • Reclusive • Melancholic • Caring
Usually impassive, quiet, and keeps to himself unless it'll be beneficial to his Clan. He can show uncertainty in his choices, and he believes that he's too young and inexperienced to be a truly good leader. Some believe that he should be more confrontational, while others like him for his docile nature.
History
His father Mothfur had also parented Sandfoot, a bitter and highly goal-driven young tom. A spirit named Heathertuft, who had a grudge against the family for unknown reasons, decided to spite Sandfoot by "blessing" his new half-siblings and giving them more importance than him. She placed a beautiful golden star-shaped marking on Rootkit's chest, which his Clanmates believed to be a sign from StarClan. In reality, Rootkit was a normal and slightly undersized cat.
He was reminded of this supposed importance throughout his kithood, both by Heathertuft and by his Clan. Everyone believed he would become leader in the future - all except Sandfoot, who was bent on leadership and hated the kit for taking his spotlight without even trying. When they were coincidentally stuck together as mentor and apprentice, Sandfoot began threatening and intimidating him.
During a training session, Sandfoot finally snapped and fatally injured Rootpaw. He had little remorse for killing his apprentice and brother, only seeing it as an obstacle removed from his life. But Heathertuft was unsatisfied with this. She used her dark power to revive Rootpaw and told him to hunt down Sandfoot and make him pay for his actions. Rootpaw, appreciative of her saving him and fearing that Sandfoot would hurt his Clanmates as well, drowned his former mentor in the river.
Rootpaw received a new mentor, Adderspot, and after a few moons he got his warrior name: Rootwhisker. He became close friends with a ShadowClan warrior named Razortail and eventually shared his mysterious past with Heathertuft. Razortail claimed to know an elder in his clan who met Heathertuft when she was alive, and from this they found out that she had been a manipulative and hateful cat. Rootwhisker realised that he'd been used as a puppet all along.
He confronted Heathertuft, who admitted that now Sandfoot was dead she had no more use for him, but she didn't have the heart to kill him. Rootwhisker attacked her anyway, causing her to run away towards the camp. As a final act, she summoned her allies in the Dark Forest to attack the Clan. They were defeated, but Mothfur - who was deputy - was killed and the leader's last life was taken. Left without a leader or a deputy, ThunderClan panicked. But before she left, Heathertuft drew - in the former leader's blood - a sign on the rocks, a star being encircled by tree roots. Rootwhisker never knew if this was for her own needs or some kind of apology to him, but he was appointed the new leader. He travelled with Razortail to receive his nine lives, and has been quietly watching over the Clan since.

Notes
- Was one of my earliest OCs. I still have drawings of him from 2013.
- I made an LPS series about him in 2014. (It's terrible and will never be released to the public)
- His design has been changed several times over the years, with his earliest design being mostly white with brighter colours. The star marking was added in 2020 as part of a revamp/update to his story.
