Imagining him as an early Victorial period kid. Definitely was at least a young adult during Victorial's war. His father/family were fishermen, but he wasn't too keen on being one too. He was a child prodigy, could hold a conversation with skilled scholars. Some noble or rich person took notice and gave him a scholarship/endorsed him to send him to a prestigious school at a fairly young age.
He was very smart, but a great causer of trouble. I think whatever the school was wasn't actually challenging him that much, and so he liked to cause a lot of antics and rope other students into it. Something or other happened (maybe the war started? Or he got expelled. Or both. or neither). He left the school. dunno what happened in intervening period, but he probably ended up using his big brain to come up with and against all odds execute all kinds of schemes
There was a girl he met at the school or something I think, Tito. He got her into a lot of schemes and trouble because he had a crush on her/continuously flirted with her. But in a very innocent, kid crush kind of way. She was about it and liked him too. But after awhile/some circumstances I haven't thought of yet I think they drifted apart. She didn't like him getting her in trouble any more.
I'm thinking Tito came from some kind of background of abuse and was adopted by some nobles as a kind of show of good will to the commoners or something idk. They're not unkind to her to. She's raised to be a nice noble daughter. I think she and Saberial meet again via some machination on his part. She's a little and he's :), probably tries to (and probably succeeds) in pulling her into some wacky adventure again like old times
