Magvyrms

Element: Fire

Predatorial/Carnivorous

Other Names: Ember Wyrms & Lava Eels

Habitat:

These large serpents make their homes on the volcanic coasts of Sinvi & Ivor. Forming nests deeper inland, in the crags of the Sun Blood Spires, and can be found hunting and lounging on the coasts. Their nests are formed from rock & ores they dig up and melt into shapes.

Behavior:

Magvyrms are highly territorial, butting head with even their own kind. They are a highly intelligent and aggressive predator, hunting down and eating just about anything that will fit in it's jaws. They hunt along the coasts, eating anything from fish to the giant Shorids. They regularly compete against Riftwings for food, and if they can take down the flying adversary will not hesitate to eat them.

Magvyrms are most well known for their ability to produce a super heated breath that melts down stone & metal ores. They will consume rock & metal, storing it in a secondary stomach where the material is heated till it is a thick molten mass, then the wyrms will spit up the molten material at prey & encroaching creatures. They can launch the molten material as far as 12 meters(40 feets). They also will use this molten material to shape and reinforce their nests. They will craft high walls and spikes to protect their nests from other Magvyrms and potential threats to the eggs.

Female Magvyrms can lay up to three eggs, and will fiercely protect them for the span of 7 weeks that it takes for them hatch. The male protects the outside of the nest and goes hunting to bring food back. Courtship involves what is called "Bellowing Contests". Essentially the males will hold themselves up on their arms and bellow loudly. Males seem to square up next to each other, bumping chests and scratching at each other. The female will pick the one that is loudest, which is indicated by her bellowing back. Mates stay together till one dies, and both raise the young. Females do also compete, battling for a favorable nesting spot. Unlike the males, the females go all out. Bite, clawing, and even coiling around each other till one gives up or dies. The winning female will get to keep the nest so long as no other female challenges them and wins.

Nests are almost solely for raising young, but it also the place where old Magvyrms go for their final hours. It is strange but despite the aggressive natures of these creatures they seem to understand when one of their own is reaching the end of their life. If a Magvyrm has not died younger, old wyrms will go to their favorite nesting spot and even if they spot is no longer theirs the current resident will let them stay. Allowing them to lay there in comfort till they pass. Some do believe the Magvyrms do this as it is food to give to young, but it has been observed that the new resident will keep bones from the old Magvyrm and decorate the nest with it.

Magvyrms are surprisingly less aggressive towards each other on the coasts, outside the nesting areas. Many can be seen sharing sunning spots and lava baths with each other. Although the largest and strongest usually get the best pick of spots. And some little squabbles can happen every now and then. Some can be seen sharing large kills. Younglings can be seen having "spitting contests" with each other as they slowly learn to use their strange ability. Magvyrms are completely immune to fire and heat. This ability comes from their thick scales and powerful fire mana.

Fun Facts:

-The Sindrion Clans claim their ancient ancestors learned the art of the forge from these beasts. They are seen as sacred animals to the Clans and you can find many items & statues with depictions of these creatures on them.

-The Sindrion Clans will often refer to the Magvyrms as Ember Wyrms, as they believe the creatures to be descendants of the Blaze Wyrm(The Primordial Fire God). Their other nickname was created by Seok-Jin, the Royal Alchemist, who had come to study the creatures. After seeing them swim in both water and lava, he had begun to call them Lava Eels, as the way they swim is similar. Aside from that they have no Eel-like behaviors or traits.

-When first studied it was thought that females had smaller horns, but it was actually just that some of them had broken their horns fighting over nesting spots.

-Magvyrms have been seen searing meat before eating. Unknown if it's a preference or not.
