About

Sumi is your typical genki girl. Energetic, ditzy, and overall just a big ol' ball of happiness and holographic sparkles. She loves to play things up and make herself look a little goofy as long as it means her friends laugh and smile with her. Depending on who you ask, she's either lots of fun or completely insufferable. Especially when she doesn't know when to quit with holographic glitter. Her antics and interests drive her roommate, Bunmi, insane sometimes and has crowned her with wonderful nicknames like "Gomi-chan" that was adopted by other people in their social circle. Despite that, Sumi continues to do what she loves. Mainly out of spite and stubbornness but, she'd prefer to call it "a hobby." It's amazing how Bunmi still lets her live there considering she's also a NEET who only contributes to the apartment by doing basic cleaning/pet matienance. With all that free time, Sumi likes to pick up hobbies at seemingly random and drop them before she can get anything past amateur level. Mostly arts and crafts type hobbies like, drawing, sewing, plushie making, doll customizing, playing piano etc. Though her silly and cutesy appearence is just that; an appearence. She puts on a smile and giggles to cover up how she can actually be. Pessimistic and quick to anger. When Sumi gets REALLY mad, it's like she;s a completely different person. Quick to violence and not above cutting someone to ribbons with her words. It takes a lot to get her to that point but, it's still a side of her that she can't stand and so desperately wants to change. Especially when her mouth writes checks it can't cash. She doesn't have the guts to tell her friends out of seeming like a burden on them and is deathly afraid of losing them so she tends to use her only really good skill of singing to help cope. Singing has always been a way for her to express her feelings and have even just a short time for an escape. If that doesn't work, her best friend is 40 oz. straight vodka. Sumi will absolutely never talk about her problems even when asked and will often dodge the question and try to turn things back around to something more fun. All Sumi really wants is for everyone to have a good time. Even if she can be just a little bit obnoxious at times, she has a heart of gold even to those who may not deserve it.

Past

Sumi was born in America. Her mother, a transfer student from Japan, and her father, a local to the area, met and fell in love pretty fast. A little.. too fast. Sumi was an accident child that forced them to get married pretty quickly. It was only then after she was born that her father realized he hated the woman he married. All of her sweetness was washed away the second they settled down and it became clear just how much she used him just to stay in America was. Due to their marriage problems, Sumi wasn't treated.. the best. Her mother was extremely controlling, verbally abusive, and isolated her for her entire childhood while her father did little to nothing to help her. After all the screaming matches he'd have with his wife, he didn't want to start more by trying to tell her what to do with their kid. Deep down he wanted to do something but, never had the courage to. Eventually, her father finally hit her mother with the divorce papers. Yet since he didn't have any evidence of what damage his wife was causing, they ended up getting due custody of their daughter. Which he was fine with. One night however, Sumi's mother packed up their things and without telling her ex husband, left on a plane for Japan and never looked back. While Sumi's father could have tried to stop her, he figured the police would be no help and he had no idea where they were so, gave up before even starting.

Sumi, being completely ignorant to this, had a hell of a time adjusting to a new country that spoke in a language she didn't understand. Her mother did the bare minimum to help her learn just so she could get her into school. Being a transfer student from another country, kids either treated her like a zoo animal or made fun of her for looking different. She'd go to school and get bullied and then come home and get basically the same treatment from her mother for not "performing well" for years. All of this lead Sumi to develop a "deliquent" persona in highschool. Any time some kid would try to say something, she'd scream and yell and kick someone's locker in. It got people to stay away but, at the cost of being a complete social outcast. Even when she tried to be nicer to some kids, they would all just run away and hide. It left her alone with only her mother who never offered a single shred of empathy. All she cared about was that her daughter was a failure and how that made her look. Eventually, Sumi ended up dropping out of school entirely when the school told her she'd have to repeat her senior year. There was no point to her. Nothing was going to get better. There's no way she'd be able to get better grades. It'd be like slamming her head against the wall. Of course then lead to more verbal attacks from her mother that would end in full blown screaming matches. Still, to keep a roof over her head, Sumi did what was expected of her. Basic chores and errands. Trying desperately to keep her mother happy but, never succeeding. Even though she was told a thousand times how much her mother loved her, the look in her eyes whenever she made a mistake said otherwise. Sumi became a recluse. Only leaving the house whenever she had to. Depression eating away at her day by day. It practically killed all of her motivation by the time she turned 22. She had no job or degree. Not even her highschool diploma. When Sumi couldn't find it in her to even leave her room and stopped doing her daily chores around the house, that's when her mother had, had it.

Her mother bardged into her room and threw a suitcase on her floor. She had until sunset to get out. She wasn't going to take care of a freeloader anymore. Sumi begged and pleaded to try and convience her to let her stay. How she'd be homeless if she did this. Her mother didn't care. That was Sumi's fault in her eyes. She should have tried harder. By the end of the day she was out on the street with nothing but, some of her clothes and her cat Mia. Luckily, Sumi still had ONE friend. A friend she met on an online forum and would talk to nearly every day for the past few years. Using what little money she had, she used a payphone to call her friend Bunmi. She was desperate. Sumi knew Bunmi had just moved into a new apartment somewhere. She had no idea where or even how far it was from where she was but, she didn't have a choice. Sumi still considers herself incredibily lucky that Bunmi agreed to let her move in. She didn't want to think of what would have happened to her had she really had no where to go. The trip was two hours away but, Bunmi was able to wire her money for the train to get there. It was yet another big change to go from her small town to Tokyo but, it was one she welcomed. Moving in with Bunmi was one of the best things to happen to her. For the first time in her life she was allowed to be herself.. mostly. Her mental health steadily improved to let her have hope for the future. Especially after meeting their neighbors. Six idential guys who are your age who are also NEETs?? Sure, they can be.. a bit much at times but, Sumi finally had actual friends. Friends who she could relate to. In the span of four months, Sumi was practically a new person. That old angry look on her face was completely gone. She still has issues that stem from her past but, one step at a time. With an actual support group, she can finally take those steps.

Skills

SUPER STRONG LEGS: Due to her borderline deliquent past, her "weapon" of choice back in highschool was the muscles in her legs. No one knows how or why but, those thunder thighs can bring that said thunder and then some. She says she could crush a watermelon with her legs alone but, no one has actually seen her do it. Though rest assured, if she swings a kick at you it has an almost 100% guarantee of breaking one of your bones.

PAIN TOLERANCE: Over time of being kicked, punched, and thrown through walls, Sumi has developed a strong pain tolerance. Most injuries that would cause normal people to scream would just leave her irritated. However, her pain tolerance is nowhere near as strong as her roommates but, that's because she's 1000% sure Bunmi is Satan.

SINGING: Sumi was naturally gifted with a rather pretty singing voice. It was one of her main coping mechanisms back in highschool and it continues to be one for her as an adult. Singing helps her feel at peace. She'll sometimes accidentally turn heads with her voice if she sings with the window open.

Relationships

Deshimaru Bunmi  [ best friend/roommate ]

Sumi and Bunmi's relationship is confusing to literally anyone who knows them. Both of them will tell you they're best friends but, from the way they talk to each other you'd think they hate each other. It's not entirely wrong to think that either. Sumi hates how much of a judgemental prude Bunmi can be and Bunmi hates Sumi's lack of dignity and horrible taste in men. Sumi met Bunmi on an online forum when she was 18. At the time, they were both angry and bitter at the world and that's what helped spark a connection between them. Years later when Bunmi got her apartment in the Akatsuka ward and Sumi got kicked out at the same time, the two of them used it as an excuse to finally meet in person and live together. As time went on and when Sumi started to change is when the two of them started butting heads and by that I mean, committing acts of brutal violence on each other. Maybe Sumi wouldn't get blood on the carpet if you didn't stab her while she's over it. Regardless of this, they'd both be the first one to show up to kill for the other if needed. No matter the differences, they still get along really well. Bunmi is special to Sumi for being her only friend in hard times. Maybe that's why she gets so upset when Bunmi judges her so harshly.

Hoshi Mai  [ friend ]

As an avid coffee lover, it didn't take long for Sumi to find Mai's cozy little cafe. She absolutely love the vibes of the place between the library and the cats that roamed around, Sumi practically fell in the love with the place the second she got there. And to top it off, the owner is the sweetest girl she had ever met albeit a bit shy. Sumi decided to become a regular and held up to that. She'll scream to the heavens that Mai's cafe is the best place to get coffee in all of Toyko even though she's barely been to any other places. She'd try to talk to Mai but, from the way she didn't say much Sumi took it as her being a bit of a bother and stopped trying so hard after a while. Then one day Sumi learned that Bunmi has known her for a while and figured she could use her roommate as the perfect jumping point for a friendship. Having someone Mai knew with her helped her feel more comfortable and actually open up to Sumi and they've been friends ever since. Sumi loves to listen to her talk about astrology and constellations while she paints her nails with little cats on them.

Hashimoto Souma  [ cousin/friend ]

One of the good things about reuniting with an Aunt you didn't know you had was that you also had a cousin you didn't know you had. Sumi didn't know what to expect of Souma but, it definitely wasn't a dude who sells weed out of his small apartment. Still, he's one of the chillest people she's ever hung out with and made her feel really comfortable from the start which is usually pretty rare with her. Hell, he's the only person that actually supports her in her love affairs and gives her encouragement instead of talking her down. Though Sumi can't help but, notice his... lack of intellegence between his random mix-ups in animals and nearly flooding his kitchen by using the wrong kind of soap pod. She's afraid his stupidity is gonna get him in trouble with the wrong people someday so has subconsciously taken on a "neesan" type roll with Souma.

Hanaori Yuuki  [ Aunt ]

Yuuki didn't even know her sister even HAD a child until finding her by chance on twitter from a semi popular video that circulated among the Akatsuka district. She tried to contact Sumi as soon as she could but, got ghosted for a long while. Sumi was really unsure of meeting anymore family considering how bad her experiences have been so far. Call it desperate or maybe stupid but, a part of her really wanted someone to call family that she was willing to go in some hope of things working out. While they usually don't for her, this time it actually did. Sumi learned that the reason she never knew about Yuuki was because, Yuuki hated her family. She was bullied by her sister and their parents did nothing to help her. She cut all ties as soon as she could. Yuuki hates herself for it now only because, she could tell her sister was never fit to be a mother and was afraid of the damage she'd could and did cause to a child. Now that Sumi's in her life, she's taken on the role as her mother figure and is trying to right the wrongs that her sister caused.

Matsuno Osomatsu  [ good friend ]

After Sumi made her change in personality, her and Osomatsu started getting along really well. Once he got over his weird, overly touchy phase in the beginning anyway. She admires his laid-back attitude and he can be absolutely hilarious. She's probably the only girl who finds his juvenile humor to actually be funny. It's also way funnier when you have a pint or two of beer in your system. These two both have a drinking problem and they both enable each other's bad habits. Osomatsu thinks it's cool how crazy her alcohol tolerance is and will actively tell her to drink more just to see where the limit actually is. She'll do the same to him but, he's nowhere near her level of tolerance so he tends to get sick a lot faster. For as much as they get along though, there are just some times where he'll say something too bluntly at the wrong time and get a heel to the face. As much as she thinks he's a nice person, if it's his own fault for getting the shit kicked out of him by his brothers she's not gonna help that situation. It pisses Osomatsu off and it doesn't help that if Karamatsu wasn't in the picture, he'd probably have a shot at a girlfriend. It makes him really bitter but, he'll usually get over it by the next day.

Matsuno Karamatsu  [ good friend/crush ]

When Sumi first got to the Akatsuka district she got.. very lost.. very fast. She was from a small town so a big city like Toyko was a completely new thing for her. Crossing a bridge, she noticed people were weirdly walking away much faster from the area then before. When she noticed the man in the leather jacket and sunglasses, she figured it's just cause he looked like a gang member which didn't really scare her. She was desperate enough to ask for directions from him considering everyone else who asked didn't really help or just ignored her. Come to find out she was extremely wrong about the gang assumption. Very wrong. It's cause the guy didn't know how to shut up. It was driving Sumi crazy but, Karamatsu agreed to help her so she sucked it up for the time being. It took every fiber of her being not to slam her hand to her face when he pointed out that he lived in the traditional looking house next to their apartment complex. She quickly realized though that she knew no one here other then her roommate. If she got lost getting here, she'd get lost anywhere. Reluctantly, Sumi gave him Bunmi's phone number until she could get her own phone so that, if she needs to go somewhere he can help her get there. Of course, he immediately agreed while calling her some weird names that she couldn't care to remember. In the beginning, Karamatsu tried to hit on her in not at all subtle ways and to try and save his feelings, Sumi told him that she wasn't interested due to the move but, they could still go places. It seemed like Karamatsu was just happy she was still talking to him and took it well to her knowledge. Yet as they went to more places and she got to know him better, Sumi had a change of heart when it came to him. Sure, his way of talking was silly and over the top but, it felt.. genuine. Unlike the shit she'd hear from actual asshole guys. He was always really encouraging and did it very loudly too. He never judged her even when she was kind of a piece of shit to him before. She found herself actually getting charmed by his stupid theatrics and before she knew it he was practically on her mind all the time. It felt like some mushy garbage straight out of highschool but, she never got to have that before. But, now that she's said she doesn't want to date him she can't just take that back, right?? Karamatsu's probably not even interested in her anymore, surely. It's her own fault she has to swallow these feelings whenever she's around him now. It's for the best anyway, Karamatsu became one of her closest friends she feels like she can tell anything so quickly that the idea of losing him cause, of stupid teenage love bullshit felt so... painful.

choro_icon_by_sammi_swirl-dcf9xzj.png

Matsuno Choromatsu  [ unsure ]

Sumi has a hard time finding the words for how she feels about Choromatsu. He's sometimes really nice to talk to! Even if its something mundane or a new episode of a popular anime they both watched the other day. Choromatsu is good at giving solid advice that he never takes himself but, it works for her. Yet.. there's some things about him that just give her the ick. The way he downright berates his brothers for not doing things he also hasn't done, the obsession over her distant cousin that she can tell is definitely parasocial and toxic, hell some of the manga he reads is grounds for suspicion. She doesn't think Choromatsu would actually do anything against the law but, it's still.. concerning to say the least. That and he can be quick to judge and that's a good way to piss Sumi off almost immediately and she's not afraid to tell anyone to shut up. She wants to like him more then she does but,.. some things are hard for her to look over. Maybe if he ever mellows out with his hobbies in the future, they could get along better.

ichi_i_con_by_sammi_swirl-dcf9y7t.png

Matsuno Ichimatsu  [ unsure ]

Things were.. awkward between Sumi and Ichimatsu in the beginning. Neither of them didn't really know what to say to each other. Sumi always got an irritated aura that felt similar to how Bunmi can be off of him which made her feel even more awkward. When she learned of his love of cats, Sumi offered for him to come over and see her and her roommates cats if he'd like. Which he agreed to though a little hesitantly. Things were still weird feeling but, whenever they were around the cats, that dark energy Ichimatsu seemed to carry around melted away and he felt more approchable. Maybe they could have been good friends once they opened up to each other. Unfortunately, we'll never know. After it came out to the rest of the brothers that Sumi likes Karamatsu, he started acting like she didn't even exist. It was already annoying enough that the new cute girl next door wasn't interested in him but, for her to be interested in HIM of all of them made him so belligerently angry. He takes that jealousy out on her sometimes by thinking of her as trash and having trash tastes. So as much as she'd like to get along with Ichimatsu, that probably isn't happening for the forseeable future. The only interactions she has with him now are to pry him off of Karamatsu whenever he gets mad at him.

jyushi_icon_by_sammi_swirl-dcf9ygx.png

Matsuno Jyushimatsu  [ friend ]

One day when Sumi was first getting adjusted and was bringing home groceries, something she could only describe as a yellow blur went right past her but, not without knocking her in the shoulder with enough force to send her crashing on the ground. She wasn't hurt too badly, just a few scrapes to the hands and knees. Sumi was going to probably brush it off as some freak accident of some kind but, the blur that ran into her suddenly was standing in front of her waving his arms up and down asking if she was okay in a very loud voice. At first seeing someone with the same face as the annoying guy who led her home confused her until she remembered Karamatsu mentioning something about siblings. Idential twins wasn't uncommon so, didn't say anything of it. Jyushimatsu helped her pick up her things and offered to get her some bandages back at his house to which she agreed to. That was the first time she stepped foot in that house and it was the first time she learned that it wasn't just twins. Sumi remembers being taken completely off guard while their mother lectured Jyushimatsu for being so careless. Even if she doesn't get along with all of the Matsunos' all of the time, Sumi appreciates Jyushimatsu for accidentally being the one who introduced her to them. Out of all of the brothers, he's the only one who really matches her genki, silly energy. They'll bounce off each other all the time and do goofy gymnastic moves together. He's helped her learn that she actually LIKES being out and active instead of cooped up in the apartment all day. Jyushimatsus' chaotic energy can sometimes scare her half to death though and it's not something she can see herself getting used to.

totty_icon_by_sammi_swirl-dcf9ymo.png

Matsuno Todomatsu  [ enemy ]

These two got along really well at first! They both have similar styles, aesthetics, and the way they present themselves. The gossiping was fun and she even taught him ways to paint his nails with less mess. When Sumi found out that what she thought she liked about him was all just a big facade, she completely dropped him. Sumi has a very low tolerance for two-faced people. People who pretend to like you but, just use you for their own gain disgust her on a personal level. Whatever friendship they had is now dead in the water and she treats him like a waste of space or like he just doesn't exist. That being said, there's a part of her that understands that her taking out her past traumas on Todomatsu isn't right but, the stubborn nature she has keeps her from accepting it fully. She doesn't want to think about how the main reasons she hates Todomatsu so much is because, she sees everything she hates about herself on him like looking through a mirror. In time she might be able to get over herself and apologize since they clearly CAN get along but, that doesn't seem like it's going to happen any time soon.

chibita_icon_by_sammi_swirl-dcf9yyz.png

Chibita  [ acquaintance ]

Sumi found out about Chibita's through the Matsuno's and she's so glad they told her about his cart. It's one of her favorite places to go for obvious reasons but, also because Chibita is always nice enough to lend her an ear whenever she's have a stressful time. She tends to eat her problems and/or drink them away instead of actually dealing with them outright. It feels nice to have someone who'll be real with you about situations but, still be nice about it in and understanding way. Sometimes though she'll end up blackout drunk and won't remember but, she appreciates it in the moment. Chibita doesn't appreciate it though when she forgets to pay after getting drunk off her ass but, usually all he has to do is text her a reminder and she'll come running with the money and an over dramatic apology. Sumi has been taking a mental note to try and hang out with him more outside of him being a bootleg therapist that he never asked to be.

totoko_icon_by_sammi_swirl-dcf9yz2.png

Yowai Totoko  [ enemy ]

The Matsuno's always talked about how great this Totoko-chan character was. It made Sumi excited to meet her. Having more girl friends would be nice. What a foolish thought that was. Seeing the brothers practically degrade themselves just for her to maybe look in their direction made Sumi want to reem her neck. At the bare minimum she was at least open and honest about her wants and goals and it was hard to tell if that made things better or worse. Wasn't she supposed to be their childhood friend? And THIS is how she acts?? She TRIED to stay civil for a while. Yet it's so hard to watch her openly take advantage of people Sumi called her friends and no it has nothing to do with any kind of jealousy shut your mouth. She couldn't take it anymore one day and chewed Totoko out over her behavior and it ended in them physically fighting and now the two don't think very highly of each other after that. It gave Sumi some validation to hear from Nyaa-chan that she only JUST started tolerating Totoko's existance at the very least.

EcWeVwzXQAA44bF.jpg

Hashimoto Nyaa  [ distant cousin/acquantance ]

Only more recently did Sumi learn that not only did she have an Aunt and cousin she didn't know about but, she actually had TWO cousins she didn't know about. One of which was an idol?? Granted they aren't actually related and only technically count due to a marriage from very distant relatives but, that's still crazy right?? Souma apparently was super close with her and introduced Sumi to Nyaa. They haven't gotten a good chance to get to know each other yet but, Sumi already likes talking with her so that's a good sign. She's even offered to help babysit her baby if no one else was able to. Nyaa would have been skeptical if Souma didn't vouch for her. That and even though Nyaa is friends with Totoko now, she can't help but find it so funny when Sumi goes on tangents about how much she hates her.

4e3ab0387e89494ab9f35b19b3c337aa.png

Dekapan  [ uncle ]

Through the marriage of distant relatives that made Nyaa-chan Sumi's "cousin", it also made Dekapan her "uncle". Sumi will never understand how this man managed to father a girl who looks like Nyaa. The kooky scientist is one that baffles her and ends up leaving her confused and infuritated. His constant experiments that fuck with the whole town drive her crazy and she couldn't even imagine living with him her whole life like Nyaa did. Sumi may be desperate for a family connection, she has a limit with the insanity.
