03 — Background

Born to a family with a unique blood magic lineage, Morgrim was quickly treated as a recluse when his magic turned out to be plant magic. As a result, his existence was hidden from the world, and he grew up mostly alone, ostracized from his siblings. He would spend most of his time in the greenhouse trying to prove himself through his magic, and failing. On one fateful night, however, he retired to his bedroom for the day, when he noticed a letter sitting on his bed.

Picking up the letter carefully, he sat down and read it by moonlight.
"Hi! If you can read this, my name is Malady, write me back! I promise your letter will find me like this one found you."
It seemed too good to be true, far too good, but he had nothing to lose. He rummaged around in his room for a quill and ink, and went to his desk to write a reply.
"Hello Malady, my name is Grimm. How do these letters work? Is it magic? If so, what kind? It's nice to meet you, by the way. I should have started with that, sorry. Please write back."
He set the quill down, and not really knowing what to do with the letter, left it on the desk and went to bed.
The next morning, his letter had seemingly vanished, and a reply from Malady was left in it's place.
Over the years, the two of them became fast friends. Malady said she was a white unicorn with pink hair and that she was in training to work with robots. They shared most of their fears with each other, though both of them lied about their magic and names. Neither of them would figure this out, however.
Soon, Malady's workload increased and Morgrim was now expected to appear at events with his influential family, though he had to stay out of the way. As they both replied to each other's letters less and less, they eventually drifted apart.
Years later, both of them assume the other was an imaginary friend.
