Zane VanDusen (是音・ヴァンデューセン VanDusen Zane), also known as Grim Essence (グリムエッセンス) is a character from the My Hero Academia manga and anime series.
Zane (是音 Zane) was born into a family that hardly cared for the wellbeing of anyone. His biological father left his family when he was too young to understand what this meant, having only been four years of age. Shortly after, Adamu (亜堕夢 Adamu) passed away, completely leaving Zane's biological mother, Tina (汀海 Tina) to raise him and older his sister, Nozomi (望美 Nozomi).
Tina was rather neglectful, violent, and impatient. Both Zane and Nozomi's basic needs were rarely met, and they both suffered horribly due to their mother's addiction to drugs. They were rarely sent to school, but were often times yelled at and hurt if they didn't know something that they "Should have learned in school". Both Zane and Nozomi were malnourished, horrified, and traumatized due to their mother and the horrible living conditions they were forced to endure in for nine years.
When Zane was nine and Nozomi was eleven they were taken away from Tina (汀海 Tina) and adopted by the VanDusen's (ヴァンデューセン VanDusen), Mishiru VanDusen (満 Mishiru) and Rory VanDusen (露利 Rory). Both Zane and Nozomi took up a strong interest in Pro Heroes shortly after. The two of them began working together to accomplish their newfound dreams of becoming heroes together.

Zane VanDusen has 3 dots in a line under each eye that go from the top corner of his eye down to midway across his eyes, from the biggest dot to the smallest. These made their first appearance on his face when his quirk first manifested at 5 years old. Each black dot looks like a drop of ink up close. Some may mistake them as tattoos, though they are simply natural markings on his face. Zane also sports a slit on his left eyebrow due to a scar he received from his younger brother Atoreiyu (アトレユ Atoreiyu). Zane and Atoreiyu had been seven (Atoreiyu) and nine (Zane) had been play-fighting when Zane was pushed off the couch by his brother, hitting his head on the corner of the coffee table. This ended in a trip to the hospital, resulting in permanent scarring on his left eyebrow.
Zane's face is littered with freckles, across his cheeks, under his eyes, and over his nose. Though the freckles don't go anywhere above his eyes. He is rarely seen without his black, fingerless gloves. With or without his gloves, his fingers are always visible. The tip of each of his fingers is stained with black ink due to his quirk. Zane always has his nails painted black and slightly grown out to a pointed tip. His fingers are on the longer side.Zane's hair is dyed constantly. His natural hair colour is a greyish-white, though he dyes it to a black that matches the colour of his ink with stark white streaks. Zane is very lean built and looks as though he should be taller than he actually is due to his body type. Due to being rather slim, he does not have very broad shoulders, but he does sport wider hips.
Zane (是音 Zane) is a pretty easygoing guy. He likes to joke around, stay up later than he probably should most nights, and relax whenever he's able to find the time. Nothing is better than kicking back with a sketchbook in one hand and a warm cup of tea in the other. He studies incredibly hard in school, despite procrastinating doing his work most days.
Zane (是音 Zane) is a fairly social person, but he doesn't feel the need to be around someone at all times of the day. As much as he enjoys time with friends, he still really likes having time for himself. He likes to be able to study, train, relax, and do his own hobbies without feeling as though he needs to have somebody with him.
Zane (是音 Zane) struggles with accepting compliments of all kinds as he was always torn down as a kid and believes that anyone who compliments him secretly just wants something from him. On top of this, Zane overthinks almost everything. It could be something as simple as making eye contact with someone strangely. He will often times seek comfort from a friend, so they can assure him he doesn't need to worry.Zane (是音 Zane) is very stubborn and hard-headed. If he sets his mind to something, he will not give up until he has accomplished it. He is never one to give up on anything.

Quirk
Mortal Ink (凌墨, モータルインク):
Zane's (是音 Zane) quirk, Mortal Ink (凌墨), gives him the ability to produce ink at will. The ink comes from the pores of each limb's extremities, such as his hands and feet. This ink, if left on anything longer than thirty seconds, solidifies into an impenetrable shell that makes it incredibly difficult for the individual within it to move or break free. Brute force or heat over 25°C are some of the only ways to break out from the ink once it's been solidified.
Zane's ink is unable to solidify itself onto him, leaving him immune to the effects of his own quirk. This gives him the ability to slide around on his ink, as he's able to produce it from his feet as well as his hands. The ink then hardens to the ground, leaving a normal floor for the others around him. Zane's sliding technique allows for him to get from point A to point B faster than if he were simply to walk.
Zane's quirk, Mortal Ink, equally allows him to create pouches of Ink that
When overused, his quirk can cause certain parts of his body to cease/tense up. In some serious cases, and when he is being pushed far beyond his limit, both his arms and legs can cease for a period of time. Zane's (是音 Zane) hands can cramp up and cause him incredible amounts of pain if his quirk has been overused. This causes him to be unable to throw any attacks from his hands for extended periods of time.
Rain and water can poorly affect his quirk. The rain can damage his ink spirits and cause them to weaken or shrink in battle, making them weaker and less effective.
