Background

When titans attacked and got into wall Maria he and his younger sister were 11 and 4 respectively. They managed to escape their home, but a 4m class titan got to them and grabbed Heine, biting his head - the source of his scar. Before it could fully bite down and kill him a Garrison member cut it down. Even though he was bleeding and badly wounded Heine grabbed his sister's hand and ran away again, not feeling the pain due to adrenaline & horror. However another, larger titan found them and grabbed his sister, lifting them both from the floor as Heine wouldn’t let go of his little sisters hand. The titan pretty much swallowed her whole, biting down just above her elbow so Heine fell to the floor still clinging to the arm. Trauma and the instinct to flee saw him running again, still holding onto his sisters dismembered arm, all the way until the ferry where - hysterical - the arm was taken from him and an adult wrapped a thick scarf around his head wound, pulling him onto the ferry for safety. Heine still has nightmares about the incident and feels guilty that he couldn’t protect his baby sister like older brothers should.

Because the bite to his head caused quite severe skull fractures and was so close to his eye he was in a critical condition for a while. Despite recovering he still suffers with sudden, intense headaches and vertigo - though he keeps it a secret so he could become a member of the Survey Corps.

He was in 104th Trainees Squad at the same time as Eren and the others though he kept to himself mostly. He graduated outside of the top 10 ranks but scored better than 20th place. His strengths are Maneuvers and first aid.

• Heine is left handed.
• He has a scar from wrist to elbow on his left forearm, from a suicide attempt around the time he was recovering from his titan bite.
• His favourite flower is the Heliotrope.
• From an early age, when his mother was still alive, Heine liked flowers. His mother was teaching him the meanings of different flowers as well as which wild flowers were edible and which were good as herbs and spices. After his mother died giving birth to his sister and they were sent together to an orphanage, Heine’s interest didn’t waver and he was allowed books on the subject as he learned to read. The carers and teachers there indulging his passion happily. If wall Maria hadn’t fallen Heine would likely be a herbalist.

• Had strawberry blonde hair as a child but due to stress it turned white prematurely.
