Lin was born into a family of mafia and underground crime syndicates. Because of this growing up he was constantly moving schools and moving to new areas. When he was younger he didn't really get why but as he got older it just became more normal. The more he grew the more he was encouraged by his Dad to learn about what they did as he could only keep his child away from the dirtiest parts of his line of work for awhile. By ten Lin had learned how to perfectly shoot a wide variety of guns and wield many weapons, tagging along with his Dad on missions and sitting in on important meetings with him. Of course he wasn't allowed an opinion just yet but he noticed how closed off his mother had started to become to both of them. Maybe he was changing too much too quickly. He only opened his eyes to the truth when his mother left them, the whispers about Lins upbringing seemingly to be even louder now that he didn;t have a mother to talk to. He kind of wishes he could see her again, and maybe things would be different.

His relationship with his dad becamed very strained the older he got, as the man is still trying to train him to lead the family next but Lin realizes that he doesn't have to stick to those ideals and that kind of the life. So the natural thing he does is try to live in his own way, to distance himself from it all as much as possible by acting cooler and calmer instead of being tough, manipulative and underhanded. Though he fears some of his fathers traits have still reached him deep down as when he gets angry he becomes very cold. Let alone he's extremely good at reading people, something he could only really learn to be good at after having witnessed so many negotiations.

He's angry that his dad's lackeys and goons worship him and are always trying to take care of him and really hates when they call him the young master. It's not out of spoilt teenage rebellion really more so at the fact that he just wants to be normal, and have conversations with them all without them having to be at his every call or trying to get in good with his dad. It saddens him as they're supposed to be 'his men' too one day but he still trys to be nice to them all on a casual level regardless of his feelings.

His dad is very disappointed that he doesn't want to follow in his footsteps and is constantly trying to push him to see the good aspects of it all, but more or less hinting that he WILL follow along anyway. Constantly trying to set him up with girls from rivalling families and fussing him about his life choices. His dad does care but he's just very harsh about what he says. Although in this era lgbt relationships are a lot more accepted there are people still stuck in the old traditional ways, especially one such as Lins dad that wants the family lineage to continue. He doesn't even know that his own son is gay otherwise he probably would've had his finger cut off as a warning sign to change his ways or something worse. So with the weight of not wanting to be in the family business, being closeted and always having rumours about his family follow him at school Lin is slowly getting more anxious and aggravted as the years go by. This is why he absolutely can't have Theo at his house and he holds his best friend in such high regards for liking who he is naturally.
