A devious mastermind
The underworld may appear on the surface to be a chaotic array of warring factions and bloody deeds, but it has a beautiful order to those who are able to see it. This pattern is the web of connections, favors, vendettas, and secrets that bind the criminal world together. The scoundrels who pluck the strands of this web are known as Spiders.
Are you enmeshed in the network of favors and debts that you exploit as a Spider, or do you scrupulously hold yourself apart, as a cold predator upon the web?
Sam is a brilliant private investigator. She and her partner in the P.I. business, Dashiell Spade (an immigrant from Ranea), worked together on tough cases in the King's City for the better part of five years. The two made an excellent team – while Dash did the talking, Sam did the planning and the heavy lifting. However, after the war between Amestrius and Ranea, few Amestrians were willing to do business with Raneans, even despite Dash's good looks and sweet talking. When the King's City police requested the help of a Ranean to minimize Amestrian police corruption, Dash accepted the new opportunity and bid Sam a fond farewell.
The two former colleagues still met up weekly for coffee, and it was clear that neither was entirely happy with their careers. Dash's so-called promotion was just for show – after all, who really wanted a Ranean on the Amestrian police force in the aftermath of a war? And without Dash to do the marketing, Sam's solo P.I. business was slow.
In an attempt to keep funds coming in, Sam turned to the underbelly of the King's City and joined The Night Shift, a group of underground mercenaries willing to take on odd jobs for the right price. Sam is a public figure, and clients are sometimes surprised to see her working in the criminal underground, but word doesn't spread. Money talks in the King's City after all, and as long as a job gets done, people are willing to look the other way. Still, Sam doesn't stray too far from her morals, even when taking on illegal jobs with her crew.

Old FriendsOld partnerships die hard. Gain a new scar, “Soft," as Dashiell Spade reminds you of the good times. When acting against Spade, you take -1d. However, your sense of camaraderie for your current crew is boosted; you gain an additional use of the Foresight ability.
One evening, The Night Shift received a request to investigate the death of Loretta Lovestone, a former singer and rumored consort to King Aldebrandt of Amestrius. Lovestone left a dying will: avenge her murder, and her fortune would be bequeathed to whoever solved the mystery. The crew's search led to crossing paths with a religious cult and a masked vigilante called the The Prince, discovering the illegitimate child of the King, reviving a long-dead dragon, and fighting an ancient vampire known as "The Escape Artist."
Sam discovered that her former colleague and best friend, Dash, had willingly become a thrall of The Escape Artist in exchange for vampiric powers. Tired of being a figurehead on the King's City police force, Dash hoped to overthrow the king of Amestrius and bring about a revolution. Sam ultimately delivered the killing blow to The Escape Artist, and Dash lost his powers and handed himself over to the authorities.
With Dash in a high security prison serving a life sentence and Lovestone's murder solved, Sam had no reason to remain in the King's City. She moved to Calliope in search of a quieter life.

The Ultimate Betrayal
Best friends and partners in the P.I. business for five years. It all went down the drain when Dash left for a job with the King's City police force, turned into a vampire thrall, tried to kill the king, and went to jail. Needless to say, they're not friends anymore, but old friendships die hard.
...and actual friends.
Vittoria is the only member of The Night Shift that Sam hangs out with outside of work. Both fans of luxury, they go to the Glassgarden Theatre in the upscale district of Empire to unwind and watch operas or listen to live music. Sam is one of the few people who knows Vittoria's true appearance.
