Personality

Magnus is shy and doesn’t like to give too much to his surroundings. He hates attention being drawn to him, as he doesn’t cope well and buckles under pressure. Because of his anxiety, he needs a lot of outside encouragement before he can feel brave enough to pursue something new that he wants to. He’s cautious about his demeanor and scared that his appearance makes others anxious. Because of this worry, he slouches to bring down his intimidating height and not show off his hybrid features, as he’s scared about frightening others with features they don’t expect on a zebra.

Design Notes

• Magnus is a one-of-a-kind Zebra/Hyena hybrid. Mixed species families are somewhat common, but the features of any children will usually take after one parent or the other. Magnus shares mixed features of both parents: Predominantly Zebra, sharing some obvious Hyena features. Hybrids like Magnus can very commonly end up dying during development, and any that survive into adulthood typically struggle with shortened lifespans and infertility.

• This diamond shape is followed by a stripe that trails down his spine and stops at his tail. There’s a small break in this back stripe that results in the white section of his hair.
• He’s tall and broad-shouldered. He’s very skinny and very much a sloucher in order to combat his height.

History

Childhood

Magnus was raised by his grandmother Igniz since he was a baby, as his mother wasn’t ready to care for a child. His grandmother is an intimidating woman. She is a little stern, not too strict, but she isn’t very well known for her ability to deal with more sensitive emotions and vulnerability. Magnus was a good quiet boy, not being a very chatty person with peers or others his age. He responded more to his environments; doodling or reading comics by himself and being more of a daydreamer than a socialite. Despite Magnus’ quiet nature, he was generally liked as he was very agreeable and nice, always happy to play along with other people’s rules.

College

Magnus found it difficult to break ice with new people, so he wasn’t very good at making friends, especially in his secondary school and college years. Narayan was a classmate who was friendly to him because of seating placements putting them next to each other at the back. Narayan does all the talking, so Magnus doesn’t have to worry about stumbling for conversation.

Magnus studies art and illustration at college. He takes inspiration from his favourite comics for his art and can create some very complex and energetic illustrations.

Misc.

Magnus has always been interested in the environments around him, and took up photography as a hobby when he was a child. He enjoys taking pictures of things he finds beautiful in his surroundings, and having them on record. They feel personal and special to him. He has a good quality camera that he saved up for with a part time job he got in college. Magnus is an artist. He likes drawing with strong line weight and mimics a rough comic/graffiti element in his art style. He likes creating action-packed illustrations, and he’s always seen listening to music when he draws.

Magnus enjoys skateboarding. He isn’t one for tricks, appreciating it more as a fun and effective method of transport. Magnus prefers to avoid public transport where he can, as crowds freak him out, but he will take the bus with his nan when traveling together. He thrifts clothes and adds his own DIY touch to them. Cutting them up, sewing, patching, tearing and adding sew-on patches to give them a touch of his personality. This is a way he can express himself.

Relationships

Narayan

Narayan is Magnus' best friend. Narayan brings out the best in Magnus, cheering on the things that make him happy and never passing judgement. They can relate their hybrid backgrounds which offers as a comfort for Magnus that no one else can provide. They might have a 'will-they-won't-they' thing going on...

Miriam

Magnus and Miriam became friends through knowing Narayan, as they both branch more off of him. Miriam is chatty and consumes a lot of the talking whenever she drops in, which sometimes puts Magnus as a listener as he struggles to relate to their conversation topics. He doesn't mind this, but they just arent that close on their owns.

Igniz Ardo

Igniz is Magnus' only known grandparent on his father's side. Igniz raised Magnus from a baby after his parents ditched him with her for her to care for. They get along well as Magnus was always a well behaved and polite boy, but he could never rely on her for personal problems, as she was never very well known for her ability to deal with more sensitive emotions and vulnerability.
