Cadet has prominent eye bags and a gaunt face. His frame is slender and boney. He frequently looks dishevelled but dresses somewhat smartly due to his preconceptions about university dress code.
Design notes
- He tends to wear a lot of layers, long sleeves, and roomy trousers to cover his body.
- He suffers from compulsive skin picking, so he has patches of scars across his hands. He also has trichotillomania and has bald patches on the back on his head, which is why he keeps his hair shoulder length.

- Cadet suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. He is unmedicated and does not recieve therapy. He was diagnosed as a teenager and recieved local counselling from his church.
- He has an obsessive interest in cryptozoology.
- He is also particularly skilled in wildlife identification, and takes a particular interest in birds.

Personality
Cadet is irritable and somewhat unpleasant. His unmanaged mental health and unstable identity leaves him socially anxious and hard to approach, but once you break down his barriers, he can be pretty affectionate. He is uncomfortable with his sexuality and his internalised homo/transphobia interferes with his relationships- he feels alien among straight people, but is terrified of the "consequences" of opening himself up to queer people and experiences.
Family Background
Cadet hails from a small town in Dumfries and grew up in a devout Catholic family. Son of a butcher and a midwife, Cadet is an only child but has many cousins. His parents wanted more children but were unable to have any, leading to feelings of inadequecy in Cadet. He has been passionate about the occult from a young age, but had to hide this from his parents due to their religious beliefs. The only person he shared his passion with was Grant Urquhart, a local farmboy and his closest friend.
History
In the Summer of 2003, sheep from Grant's farm turn up dead, savagely torn apart. A few days later the local parish priest is found disembowled. Curfews were put in place and townspeople were encouraged to stay safe indoors. However, Cadet had theorised that there is some sort of supernatural beast in their midst and has roped his best friend into hunting it down with him during a sleepover.
Unfortunately, Cadet was correct, and a wolfman resides within the woods by the farm. Grant's attempt to shoot the beast with his father's hunting rifle fail, and he is attacked instead. Cadet deals the finishing blow to the creature, leaving behind a human corpse. Grant's injuries lead to him becoming a wolfman and his family move to keep him out of danger.
Vices
Cadet has carried the guilt with him ever since, and came to the conclusion that God was punishing him and those he loved due to his "impure" feelings towards Grant. This leads Cadet to bottle up his feelings and distance himself from others. As he still finds himself yearning for some sort of connection, he took up dangerous habits from a young age, such as drinking and smoking, to fit in with his peers as well as cope with his own pain. He does not drink anymore, but hasn't kicked smoking just yet.
Relationships
Grant
After meeting again for the first time in 10 years he develops an intense romantic fixation on him, which he has a hard time coming to terms with due to internalised homophobia and the massive amount of guilt he suffers over Grant's lycanthropy.
Harry
Harry is Cadet's best friend. The two met as teenagers on an internet forum after getting into an argument about a photograph Harry took, which Cadet claimed was haunted. Harry decided to move from Edinburgh and study in Dumfries after feeling concerned for Cadet's wellbeing living independently for the first time.
Roger
Roger is a friend of Grant's who works at a gay bar, where Grant plays live music. Cadet and Roger clash somewhat due to the latter's teasing nature and ability to seemingly live without a care in the world. They grow closer as they hang out more due to mutual friends.
