Many centuries ago, the Ambrosius Kingdom was struck with a great and terrible famine, reducing the crops to withered husks. Many people died of starvation, and the kingdom was on the verge of collapse. However, just as all hope seemed lost, the crops sprung back to life and flourished like never before! Some historians say the heavens smiled upon the king and blessed his kingdom, but only the men of the royal family know the truth.
In reality, the king had made a pact with a powerful demon out of pure desperation. The kingdom would prosper and never again suffer such tragedies, but for every generation that the Ambrosius bloodline stayed in power, a female child of theirs was to be sacrificed.
The demon did not consider himself an evil man however, simply a man of opportunities, and was willing to negotiate something to ease the king's conscious. The sacrificial child was to be chosen by the unicorns. They would bless the royal mother's womb while she was pregnant, creating a Brightmaid: a radiant young girl with unicorn-like features. Until she completed her education and training, she was to be raised like any other royal child.
Princess Avalon is the latest of the sacrifices, and like all before her, is unaware of her status as such. As far as she knows, at the end of her training she'll have to prove she's worthy of ruling by fighting a "dragon"... really just the demon in disguise. She is very confident though! Her father told her that many princesses before her had emerged victorious and went on to rule kingdoms in far away lands. And why would her beloved father ever lie to her?
